April 10, 2017 Lincoln County Manager s Office C/O John Henry Purchasing Office Third Floor Citizens Center 115 West Main Street Lincolnton, NC 28092 We are pleased to submit our statement of qualifications for your consideration of ADW Architects to provide architectural and engineering services necessary for the design, construction and completion of a branch library with 10,000 to 12,000 useable square feet on approximately a 35 acre parcel in Vale, North Carolina. We are passionate about public building design at ADW. We are very experienced designing public sector projects including libraries, town/city halls, county office buildings, public works buildings, health and human services buildings, police facilities, fire stations, EMS, sheriff s offices, courthouses, jails and detention centers. Our designs reflect our client s functional needs for the project, along with their goals and objectives for the project. Our designs also reflect the aesthetic character of the built environment in the communities where they are built. We have led many meetings with community groups to hear their views about facilities planned for their community and helped them understand the positive benefits of public facilities designed to fit into the context of the communities they serve. Each project that we undertake responds to the client needs, site conditions, budget and many other considerations. We consider ourselves as only one of many key players on the project team. We work closely with the owner s representatives to establish goals and objectives. We have worked on public projects in communities from the mountains to the coast. This project experience has helped us learn the distinctly different needs of our public sector clients and the process involved in public building planning, design, bidding, and construction. We also understand that no matter how well a building functions on the inside and how good it may look on the outside, if the project does not come in on budget, we have not done our job. We cannot overstate the importance of staying with-in budget. It is so important that from day one on a project, we begin cost estimation. ADW Architects has completed work throughout the Carolinas. We make sure travel distance is not a problem for our clients. In fact, we have successfully completed projects all over the United States. We know your area of North Carolina very well. We have completed many projects in the surrounding vicinity, including numerous projects for Gaston College and Catawba Valley Community College. ADW Architects is a stable, reputable, and professional architectural firm. We offer a highly qualified, professional staff to ensure the success of the project. We believe we can provide Lincoln County with extraordinary customer service and would be pleased to provide additional qualifications if desired. Thank you for your consideration, Jim Powell, AIA Managing Principal jpowell@adwarchitects.com Six Coliseum Center 2815 Coliseum Centre Drive, Suite 500 Charlotte, North Carolina 28217 704.379.1919 (t) 704.379.1920 (f) www.adwarchitects.com

company overview - length of time in business ADW Architects has been providing architecture, planning and interior design services on projects throughout the country since 1977. Our portfolio represents a broad spectrum of civic, public safety, educational, faithbased, theater, entertainment, restaurant, office, retail and mixed-use development projects. ADW s diverse practice is committed to design excellence by utilizing a collaborative approach and creating customized design solutions that solve our clients needs and enhance our built environment...for life. adw s unique qualities We are industry leaders in both the functional design and aesthetic design of public sector facilities Our team s commitment to design excellence and staying within budget Our team s philosophy and approach to design teamwork & collaboration Our team s commitment to proactive construction administration Our team approaches each project as a unique opportunity to implement our client s goals & objectives We are creative problem-solvers in a team atmosphere We are committed to providing a high level of customer service: please check our references summary of qualifications, technical competence, and experience ADW Architects is a 40 year old firm that specializes in public sector work. Our qualifications include over seventy-five (75) successfully completed/in-progress public sector buildings in North Carolina and South Carolina, including libraries. We have worked with Davie County, Iredell County, Mecklenburg County, Rowan County, Cabarrus County, Union County, Richmond County, Halifax County, Alexander County, amongst others. Please see our list of similar projects for more information about our qualifications and experience. Technical competence on a project is extremely important to us. ADW prides itself on quality service. Our governmental facilities designs and the documents produced are an instrument of our service; therefore, the quality is paramount to the successful realization of our clients goals and our reputation as a professional organization. We achieve quality by assigning staff on each project based on their area of expertise, whether it be in the design phase, production phase, or construction administration phase. We listen carefully to the client s needs and goals for the project and reach the proper balance of function, cost, and aesthetics. ADW believes a project s quality also includes the resulting reflection of our clients re-quests and needs on the final product. Therefore, inclusion of the client throughout the design phases is an important aspect of our quality assurance. During the production phases the project team maintains that same communication. We make sure the construction documents adhere to the four Cs : Clear, Concise, Coordinated and Correct. Once we achieve certain milestones in the drawings production, the entire project team reviews the progress sets, including the Owner, the Engineers, the Architects, and the Construction Contract Administrator. We also like to include the code enforcement officials in the review of the progress set by holding preliminary reviews. During construction, our production staff and construction administration staff stay in constant communication to ensure the building is built to the design intent. At this stage, our project manager and construction contract administrator can finish each other s sentences. 2

summary of qualifications, technical competence, and experience, cont. BIM & 3-D MODELING We use Building Information Modeling (BIM) as a tool for a whole building design approach, or Integrated Project Delivery (IPD). In this process, project goals and major design decisions are developed early and agreed upon by all members of the project team, generally including the owner s representatives, users, designers and consultants, and the contractor and subcontractors. The BIM model is a platform for collaboration throughout the project s design and construction - a constantly evolving database of design, fabrication information, and project management logistics. This collaboration can maximize efficiency and reduce the potential for delay resulting from significant changes late in the design process, as well as minimize cost-impacting modifications during construction. BIM, along with early and constant involvement of all disciplines and trades, aids in bringing concerns and possible conflicts to the forefront well before they would surface in the field. All user comments are incorporated into the BIM model when they are received to ensure inclusion in the final design documents. It has been our experience that an integrated design approach utilizing BIM as collaboration tools typically capture potential construction and design problems in design. This enables us to identify issues and take corrective action with little cost, schedule, or material impacts to the project. PHOTO-REALISTIC RENDERING We use Trimble Sketchup in tandem with various types of photo-realistic rendering software to create lifelike images. These renderings help us communicate our vision to the client as well as provide an accurate portrayal of materials, finishes, lighting, solar orientation, etc. By using photo-realistic rendering as a design tool, the client and design team are able to make design decisions much more easily and earlier in the design process. leed experience ADW Architects also believes in a holistic approach to sustainability. We have been employing Green Building principles in our projects for years, we have several registered projects and others that have followed LEED principles that we term Green Build projects. These ADW projects are designed with LEED as a guide and they range from up-fits to large-scale developments. ADW Architects is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council. We have three (3) LEED AP BD+C, one (1) LEED AP and three (3)LEED Green Associates on staff. description of the proposed project understanding and approach ADW s methods, approach and controls used on all our public sector projects are very similar. Our overall approach can be stated as follows: Interactive, Participatory, Consensus Building. What that means is that on all of our public sector projects we do the following: We work collaboratively, listening and leading, and communicating effectively. We provide consistent project team personnel. We customize our design for each project. We design buildings that are sustainable and energy efficient. We believe in proactive construction administration We design buildings that fit our client s construction budget. 3

description of the proposed project understanding and approach, cont. By using this approach and implementing these methods & controls, we have successfully completed numerous public sector projects in an effective, timely, economical and professional manner. ADW uses a customer service based design process. This means that our design services entail working with our public sector clients to discover their specific goals and objectives for their project, and gearing our design approach to meet those goals. We employ a 7 step process to get the project off to a good start as follows: Step 1: Meet with the County s project team, review any program work done to date and discuss project scope and project budget. Step 2: Work through a workshop process with the County s project team to create a written program and refine any preliminary design work already completed for this facility. This process is collaborative, involving the owner s project team through each step of the programming process. A library to meet not only current, but future needs as well is very important. With the changing role of public libraries nationwide, many counties are bringing in library programming consultants who specialize in understanding current and future library trends nationwide. ADW Architects would welcome the opportunity to team with the County and whichever library programming consultant the County may choose; or we can work together with the County s project team to program the library. Step 3: Formulate Initial design concepts to achieve the County s program and budget objectives, via plans, sketches and 3-D analysis, and provide cost estimation for these concepts. Step 4: Thoroughly review Initial concepts with our engineering team to analyze and think through how our initial identified concepts would work, also looking at life cycle and operating costs. Step 5: Present viable concepts to the County and refine the designs based on feedback. Step 6: Continue to work with the County to study both the pros and cons to each concept and option, all the while keeping a watchful eye on the original goals, objectives, and budget. Modify our design concepts and our cost estimates based on owner feedback. Step 7: Provide a synopsis of the design concept deemed the best in meeting the County s goals and objectives using the following criteria: Programming and project scope objectives met Budget objectives met Overall project schedule met County s goals and objectives met Further Steps... We then move forward into the development of the design and detailing of the project through the typical phases of design and construction. 4
