Historical Narratives of the City Tracing Scales of Occupation ARC 497b Special Projects in Architecture / 3 CU This course will be conducted as a laboratory. Students will visit a variety of cities in Japan ranging from the remote and rural to the dense megalopolis. Tokyo is situated in the seeming contradiction of the globalization of technologies and romantically preserved particularities. Weaving the historical with the present, we will begin with an investigation of Edo and demonstrate its basis and diversion from other Japanese cities in the early seventeenth century. However, we will focus on the modern city and concentrate on the tension of western influence and modernism, the twin spears and legacy of Meiji Japan. Our research will follow the ideas, forms and formulations from the urban planning, landscape and design sectors.

Presenting the Idea Confluence of Craft and Materiality ARC 497b Special Projects in Architecture / 3 CU Japan s influence within architecture and design has been longstanding. This course will offer a critical investigation of both traditional and contemporary Japanese Architecture. From SANAA to Yohji Yamamoto, Japanese architectural, industrial, packaging and fashion design continues to offer lessons in the realm of materiality. Modern design sensibilities continue to embrace notions of precision and formal beauty. Focused on the notion of materiality and its increased importance within the theoretical underpinnings of architectural design, this course will explore the experiential and phenomenal qualities of the work by Tadao Ando, SANAA, Kengo Kuma, Isamu Noguchi, Atelier Bow Wow and others. Roanji

Program and Schedule The scope of the proposed travel program is intended for architecture, landscape architecture, planning, and BSSBE students. Course content, activities, and assignments may be modified to accommodate the strengths and interests of students in each discipline. The schedule is conceived for a 30-day intensive study-abroad curriculum. Formal activities, including classes, organized tours, office visits, and guest lectures, will be held five days each week. The Japan study abroad students and faculty will curate an exhibit of the travel research to be installed at CAPLA in Fall 2016. Prerequisites Undergraduate students shall have successfully completed at least their second year in their respective program. Graduate students shall have successfully completed at least their first year in their respective program. Tadao Ando, Benesse Museum, Naoshima Island

Travel Dates [30 days] Proposed: June 1, 2016 June 30, 2016 or July 1, 2016 July 30, 2016 Itinerary Niigata Nagaoka City (James Turrel House of Light) Kanazawa Kyoto Okayama Tokyo With day trips to Naoshima Island and Hiroshima Kyoto and Tokyo will serve as sites for consecutive one-week explorations, with fewer days spent in surrounding cities. In general, mornings and early afternoons will take students to significant historical and contemporary works for discussion and analysis. Day trips and architectural office tours will also be incorporated as each locale affords. Weekends will be spent engaging nature, exploring the city, seeing art, sketching, reading, and eating. Darci Hazelbaker joined CAPLA in the Fall of 2007. She holds a Bachelors of Arts in Architecture from the University of New Mexico where she graduated with top honors. She established her own architecture and design studio, Hazelbaker Rush with her partner in 2009. Her interests lie in the act of crafting objects and spaces through the use and re-use of materials, while distilling the ideas behind thie act to its simplest and most pure form. In the making of space she believes that the evolution of ideas and methods takes place within a process that is continually evolving to engage the client, the user, the craftsman, and the environment. The success of any design can be measured by the integrity found within this process as well as the experiences created by it. Annie Kurtin joined the UA School of Architecture faculty in 2010. She holds a Masters in Critical Theory from Goldsmiths College, University of London and a Master of Architecture degree from Columbia University s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation where she was the recipient of the Charles McKim Prize for Excellence in Design, the Saul Kaplan Traveling Fellowship, and the Lucille Smyser Lowenfish Memorial Prize. At CAPLA, Annie coordinates the Foundation Design studio and has taught history, design communication and studio courses. SANAA 21st Century Museum, Kanazawa
