About This Portfolio About this Portfolio This portfolio has been meticulously designed and prepared by Jairo Ortega to deliver two primary functions. 1. To serve as a means of assessment for admission to higher education. 2. To communicate skills and abilities to potential employers. Due to the variation of portfolio requirements for schools, I have designed this portfolio to fulfill criteria of various schools. Some of the schools that I am applying to focus on drawing ability, other focus on process, while others require a balance. Education Many times portfolio reviewers and employers can misinterpret the education of an individual. Curriculum can constantly change and can vary within colleges and universities. In an effort to better communicate my education I have composed a detailed list of classes that I have completed at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, IL. Only classes that have contributed to this portfolio are listed. To request an official transcript or for more information on these classes, please feel free Architectural design i Arch 2201 : 5 CREDITS fall 2008 Students explore space and form in a sitespecific environment. The class focuses on the process of analyzing and evaluating a problem to come up with concepts to develop solutions. Intro to Architectural Design Arch 1131 : 4 CREDITS spring 2008 Course focuses on the development of spatial concepts in architectural design while exploring composition, form, relations of elements in 2D and 3D projects. Projects focus on concept generation and evaluation. Architectural Design Communication Arch 1121 : 4 CREDITS fall 2006 Introduction to 2D and 3D architectural presentation and communication. Fundamental skills taught include basic model building, drawing orthographic, perspective and freehand drawings. Detailing & Construction Documents Arch 2102 : 5 CREDITS fall 2008 Class simulates the development of a residential and commercial project in an architectural office. Students experience building codes, construction systems, material selection, construction detailing and documentation. Over the course of the semester construction documents are prepared for a residence and a medium size warehouse with an office using CAD. Basic ARCHITECTURAL drafting Arch 1101 : 2 CREDITS fall 2006 Fundamentals of drafting by hand. Other skills taught include the use of tools, lettering, dimensioning, and other drafting methods. Construction documents for a home are prepared by hand over the course of the semester. Drawing I Arch 2230 : 3 CREDITS fall 2008 Introductory studio class with a focus on accurate observation and representation. Course includes vocabulary development and reference to historic models of drawing. Thank You I would like to thank my friends and family for supporting me in my architectural studies, even through finals weeks when I ve spent most of my time at the studio. I would also like to specially thank my architecture instructors at the College of Dupage. I ve learned so much within the last two years. Thank you Jane, Mark, and Ted. Design Statement Architecture has always been a significant part of my life. My father has been a commercial carpenter as far as I can recall, needless to say I grew up with architecture. My father is very proud of the work he does. I can remember him bringing home architectural blueprints for me to look at. Occasionally we took trips to his job sites on our Sunday walks, just to show me his latest project. Like my father, I too have great pride in my work, that s why every project that I m involved in is designed and crafted with my upmost care and attention. Over the course of my life I have had the opportunity to travel across the United States and Latin America. My travels have shown me great differences in architecture everywhere I ve been, especially in southern United States and Latin America. Deep in the forests and deserts of Latin America, native people over the course of generations have learned to adapt with nature and make architecture with their natural surroundings. I believe that my ultimate goal as a designer is to follow the example of these native people and design architecture that coexists responsibly with nature. For many, sustainable design is a sacrifice or compromise with aesthetic design. I don t believe in such a notion. I believe that sustainable architecture can be beautiful architecture. I believe that as designers it is our civil duty to design responsibly with nature for the welfare of future generations. I believe a good design is one without compromise and completely fulfills the expectations of the client. I believe that even the toughest problem can have a simple solution. As a design student, I look forward to my journey ahead, and hope to solve great problems one at a time. Structural Systems Arch 2230 : 3 CREDITS fall 2008 1 An introduction to the components and to contact me. My contact information can be concepts of structural systems found in steel, found on the back cover of this book. concrete, and wood. 2

Manual vs. automatic Art 1101 : Drawing I 2 Weeks Description The theme to this project came from my interest in carpentry. Power tools make the job faster and more efficient yet regardless of how easy powertools make our job, the human touch will always be needed. 3 Left: A variety of screwdrivers in formation and ready to work. Opposite: Power drill looking heroic and ready for action. 4

Precedent study collage Arch 2201 : Design I 2 Weeks Objective To create a three dimensional collage based on the ideas and concepts of an existing building. Precedent project Parc de la Villette by Bernard Tschumi 9 Result I created a geometric abstraction based on the nine-square structural grid used in the follies of Parc de la Villette. I juxtaposed the grid to address the idea of movement in the park. By creating positive and negative volumes I also addressed the idea of structure versus the envelope which Tschumi uses to create the 35 unique follies in Parc de la Villette. 10

Nature of materials Arch 1131 : Intro to Design 3 Weeks Objective To create a sculptural interpretation of the ideas and concepts of an existing building. Precedent Project Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Arts by Zaha Hadid Result I explored Zaha Hadid s method of seamlessly attracting visitors with the use of an urban carpet and then made my own seamless transition between the inside and outside of the sculpture with a tapered concrete base. I then took her idea of upwards movement and created ramps that lead to the top of the sculpture. The rotating ramps help create enclosure for the sculpture all while blurring the boundaries between the enclosures just like Zaha Hadid blurs the boundaries between the spaces in the Rosenthal Center. Texture drawing Arch 1121 : Architectural Design Communication 1 Week Objective Create a composition of found objects with varying textures and then represent the composition with pencil. 13 14

Folly Arch 1131 : Intro to Design 3 Weeks Objective Design a park setting with three follies using a supplied kit of parts. The follies are designed to be experienced sequentially from simple to complex and open to enclosed. Concept To create distinct and independent spaces surrounded by nature. Wall section study Arch 2230 : Structural Systems 2 Weeks Objective Research and analyze the structural system of an existing building with an expressive structural system. Then in groups of four create a physical model of the structural wall system. Models are to be a minimum of four feet tall. Arts pavilion Arch 2201 : Design I 10 Weeks Site The project is located in the east section of Daley Bicentennial Park (Chicago, IL). The site offers great views to Lake Michigan and the surrounding Chicago skyline. The large amount of trees make for a tranquil and private setting. Program The program calls for a pavilion that contains a café, performance area, and an art gallery with public amenities.
