Ines Voršič In 2005, the University of Maribor held its first International Summer School on British and American language, literature and culture. For this, our ninth year, the Summer School on the topic of
language, literature and cultures in contact. This year, it will have three tracks: culture, where we have planned to introduce the participants to the cultural impacts in translation science; literature, where we will celebrate anniversaries of great personalities in Slavic literature; language in tourism, as there is not tourism without a good foreign language proficiency, as for the tourist, as for the host. The 9 th International Summer School will take place at the University of Maribor, Slomškov trg 15, Maribor. It will begin on Sunday, August 31 st, and end on Friday, September 13 th, 2014. Maribor - Lent The town of Maribor traces its history back exactly 850 years. Maribor enjoys a scenic location on the plain beside the River Drava, and its sky-line is dominated by the Piramida, a vine-covered hill overlooking the town and the fifteenth-century Castle at its heart. As the second-largest city in Slovenia, Maribor is a centre of culture and learning. The city boasts a theatre (the Narodno Gledališče), a concert hall (the Narodni Dom), a twelfth-century cathedral, the oldest, over 400 year old grapevine in the world, several cinemas and nightclubs, three bowling alleys, two thermal spas, and its museum and art gallery offer visitors the best of Slovenian and Yugoslavian art, history, and culture. The University Library provides facilities for research in all fields and is available for use by Summer School students. Maribor was one of the European cultural capitals in 2012 and European Capital of Youth in 2013.
Market at the Main Square (Glavni trg) The two weeks of the Summer School will be an especially exciting time to be in Maribor. We look forward to welcoming you to the 2014 University of Maribor International Summer School in Maribor, the city at the heart of Slovene Styria.
