In 1946 she became Lecturer in Botany as well as Dean of Women at the newly established University of Melbourne, Mildura Campus. Blackwood won a British Council Scholarship to the University of Cambridge, England, where she was awarded a PhD for her work in plant genetics. Returning to Melbourne in 1951, Blackwood became Senior Lecturer, later Associate Lecturer and Reader in the School of Botany until her retirement from the department in 1974. Elected to the University Council in 1976, Blackwood was the first female Deputy Chancellor (1980 1983) and as such the first woman to confer degrees in the University s 127 year history.
