Foreword Soon after bcoming interested in my Eller ancestry, I spent time in Salisbury, North Carolina, tracing my Eller roots. After finding four different Eller immigrant lines represented among the hundreds of public records, I realized that the prospect of unscrambling Eller genealogies was dim. Then I met Peggy Agner Troutman, who showed me her many notebooks of genealogical data and told me about her aunt, Louise Barringer File, who had been involved in Eller family research for decades. I learned that Louise had given information to J. W. Hook who chose to leave it out of his 1957 book on George Michael Eller. I knew after my first visit with Peggy that I had found a gold mine of information that should be shared. She and I have collaborated for the past several years in the preparation of the material for publication. Peggy.was led into genealogical research by Louise and she is always careful to give much credit to Louise. When the first Eller Family Conference convened in Salisbury in 1989, Peggy presented an outline of some of the earliest Eller families of the area. She and Louise continued expanding and rechecking their data in preparation for its publication. The final results, published here for the first time, add significantly to the genealogy of early Eller settlers in Rowan County, North Carolina. Louise Barringer File, because of failing eyesight, is no longer active in research, but she continues to serve as a mentor and inspiration to Peggy. Louise's knowledge of her connections with the George Michael Eller line through his daughter Maria was learned from her grandparents. Her family line always knew that George Michael Eller was one of their ancestors. The contributions of these two ladies ranks in significance with the earlier work of James W. Hook on the George Michael Eller line. An interesting feature of their work is showing how many Eller descendants can claim descent from four different immigrant Eller ancestors. Also, they reveal for the the first time much about the descendants of immigrant Jacob and John Melchior Eller. Much effort was expended in the preparation of the material for publication. Many drafts were exchanged and scrutinized in an effort to improve format and eliminate errors. Some errors probably remain. We will be grateful to have these called to our attention. The Eller Family Association owes much to Peggy and Louise for this important addition to Eller family genealogy. As Editor, I salute Peggy and Louise for providing the most significant new contribution to Eller genealogy to come from Rowan County, North Carolina, since the work of James W. Hook in 1957. J. It was not uncommon for German parents to use multiple given names in which one of the given names applied to more than one child. The above record shows: that like Jacob Eller, Melchior's father was Casper Eller - that Melchior's blrthdate was 1735 or 1736, depending upon his birth month - that Melchior was confirmed a Lutheran a significant point because some think he was a Dunkard, based on his refusal to bear arms in the Revolutionary War. For this he and his son were hauled into and had to defend their estates against confiscation on charges of being Tortes. They were found "not guilty." (Minute Book 1773-1886, p 330,.Court Record, Rowan Co., NC) -that when compared with Jacob Eller's 1753 marriage record, thier father, Casper, died between 1753 and 1756, apparently in Germany. 4. GEORGE MICHAEL ELLER 1743. A Michael Eller arrived in Philadelphia aboard the ship Phoenix from Rotterdam. He took his oath on 30 Sep 1743 (S&H, 1:346). A Michael Eller was granted 25 acres of land in Lancaster Co., PA (Hook, 1957, p 1) Possible Records of George Michael Eller In North Carolina Tax List: 1759, Rowan Co., NC, "Michael Eller'' (Note: because early Germans were known to render Melchior as Michael; this record may have been for Melker Eller rather than George Michael Eller. Tax List: 1772, Randolph Co., NC, "Michael Eller." Note: May be a record for George Michael Eller because this record came from a former section of Rowan Co., NC where his sons took up land in the 1770's. (Eds. Family tradition is strong that George Michael Eller lived in North Carolina for some time before he removed to Frederick Co., Maryland, but no records clearly establishing this fact are known. His sons Peter, Leonard, John and George lived in the county, Peter as early as 1773, but In that same year George Michael Eller took up land In Frederick Co., MD (Deed Bk. S, pp 96-98), where he lived until his death. His will was recorded 15 Aug 1778 (Hook, 1957, p. 6). Louise Barringer File, now in her eighties, heard her grandmother Julianne "Julia" Eller Morgan, say that her mother, Cloah (Chloe) "Glory" Eller, was the daughter of Mary (Maria) Eller, youngest daughter of immigrant George Michael Eller. This tradition has been alive and well for many years in this family line, unfortunately no confirming records are known. The marriage of Jacob and Mary (Marla) Eller provided the final link in the chain of marriages, sketched in Fig 2, which shows how hundreds of Ellers are descendants of four different immigrant Eller families. The following genealogy is based on this premise. Louise met J.W. Hook many years ago, and told him of these relationships but Hook choose not to include them in his book on George Michael Eller.
