This follow-up auction proposes an overview of Brazilian Design from the 1950s to the present day, blending historical and contemporary works, with an art section featuring Geraldo Marcolini, Manfredo de Souzanetto and Daniel Lanes.
Autonomous furniture production in Brazil began in the 1940s, when the country s designers moved away from European models to create a new style, infused with their own tastes and culture, and adapted to Brazilian means of production. Brazilian Design especially flourished from 1950-80, giving full rein to pioneers of Modernism. The hundred or so lots at the PIASA sale provide a telling glimpse of this exciting period and the evolution of this specific branch of Design. A Rare Market Selection Highlights include the Rio rocking-chair designed by Oscar Niemeyer and his daughter Anna Maria in 1978. Its curvaceous forms echo Niemeyer s architecture, and mark this chair down as an icon of Brazilian furniture design. Niemeyer s bentwood technique enabled him to produce pronounced curves, in tribute to femininity and the beauty of Rio de Janeiro. The refined cane-work and leather head-rest enhance the chair s perfection. Another example of Brazil s unique style is the work of two immigrants from Europe, Martin Eisler and Carlos Hauner. They teamed up in 1953 to design furniture for Ernesto Wolf, whose financial support enabled them to open their showroom Moveis (later renamed Forma). Powered by high ambition and global awareness, they designed pieces attuned to the international market, such as the luxurious monumental bench to be offered at PIASA, made from indigenous wood and fully in line with the aesthetics of the time.
