Degree& Profession WEEK 3 Dear Friends, We have arrived at the VII Edition of Degree & Profession Florence World Festival that, within the frame of the Life Beyond Tourism ethos and following the mission of the Romualdo Del Bianco Foundation, through the years contributed to the development of intercultural dialogue, becoming an important international appointment between graduates, students and professionals. It was September 2008 when we announced the creation of the association Life Beyond Tourism for intercultural dialogue, the natural corollary to the Declaration of Intent signed on 16 March 2008 by 59 of the Fondazione s experts, convened in Florence from twenty different countries. The complete integration of Degree & Profession with the ethos Life Beyond Tourism has been clear since the beginning, and I m glad to seize the opportunity provided by this event to announce the recent creation of the Life Beyond Tourism Nonprofit Portal. In addition to the concepts of safeguarding and enhancing our cultural heritage, the Fondazione is eager to direct people s use and enjoyment of that cultural heritage toward the furtherance of intercultural dialogue. The Life Beyond Tourism Nonprofit Portal, a concrete instance of that determination, is designed specifically to introduce the visitor to a region s character by presenting those cultural institutions and businesses including those with a low profile that play a significant role in defining that character, and whose history and current activity embody the spirit of place. Thus the portal provides an interactive platform for communicating an intangible heritage made of motivations and aspirations which breathe life and meaning into the tangible heritage of a place. It becomes clear how intangible heritage has a right to the same safeguards as any work of art or monument. Through this it becomes an important mean to foster intercultural knowledge, today s urgent necessity, and to transform tourism including mass tourism from a threat to our heritage into a strategic opportunity for intercultural dialogue. Sites, especially those included in the world heritage, can therefore become workshops for knowledge and shared growth within a framework of mutual respect. Thus, it became clear that Degree & Profession was an opportunity to analyze the linkage between heritage and intercultural dialogue and the role of the young generations for the development of this new concepts. I hope this days will give us an opportunity to grow together and to move toward a concrete implementation of Life Beyond Tourism ethos in each of our cities and countries. An opportunity to develop ideas and proposals. An opportunity to go back home with a new vision toward a future in which intercultural dialogue is the basis of our human, social and cultural growth. All said, I extend to you my warmest welcome and I thank you for being with us a protagonist in the popularization of the Life Beyond Tourism ethos.
