The building was designed by architect Väinö Vähäkallio. Its design represents typical Nordic classicism of the 1920s. The building served as the headquarters of Cooperative Elanto from 1928 to 1995, during which period director Väinö Tanner actively managed the operations. Väinö Tanner had a strong hold of the entire organization, and also lived in the building with his family. VÄINÖ IS STEEPED IN HISTORY Due to rapid growth in the 1920s, Cooperative Elanto soon grew out of its offices and was forced to move into new premises near the Helsinki center at Hämeentie 11. The new production block and headquarters were designed by architect Väinö Vähäkallio. The objective of the Elanto HQ was to bring the spirit of the cooperative and its various functions under one roof. Over the action-filled years of Elanto, in addition to offices Väinö housed a carpenter s workshop, laundry, policlinic, drug store, confectionery, and bank vault. Side by side with his impressive political career, Väinö Tanner worked as the CEO and Chairman of the Board of Elanto from 1915 to 1946. Väinö Tanner lived on the fifth floor in a ten-room apartment. Spectacular bay windows and the marble fireplace are still featured in the building. It also housed some of the Elanto employees. The building served as the Cooperative Elanto headquarters from 1928 to 1995. Until 2016, the building was used by the City of Helsinki Education Department. As the department moves to new premises, the building is renovated according to the wishes of new tenants while protecting its old characters. IN THE HEART OF SÖRNÄINEN, CLOSE TO KALASATAMA The property is located in Sörnäinen, close to Helsinki center, in the corner of Hämeentie and Kaikukatu. An interesting new residential area has taken off at the waterfront that was an active port one hundred years ago. More apartment buildings as well as a major shopping mall are under construction. The mall is to be completed by 2018. The whole district is expected to be completed between 2020 and 2030. After completion, it will provide homes for 17,000 residents and work for 10,000 employees. Väinö is easy to reach, from near and far: There are two metro stops around the property: Hakaniemi and Sörnäinen, just 500 metres away. The trip from Hakaniemi to the Railway Square takes about two minutes by metro. Tram stops are right by the building. Buses continuously cruise Hämeentie; there is one every minute.
