#RoomDeposit A Room Deposit of $200 MUST be paid online BEFORE participating in Room Selection between March 7th and March 24th. In addition, all students participating in Room Selection MUST have a clear balance with the University, including parking fees. NOTE: Failure to pay the Room Deposit on time will result in forfeiture of Room Selection privileges. Students who DO NOT sign up for housing during Room Selection WILL NOT receive housing for the next academic year. *RAs, AIM, EOP, graduate students, and full scholarship recipients are exempt from paying the Room Deposit. #Timeslot Every resident will have a timeslot that marks at what time during the Room Selection process they can log on to sill out their application. The date states March 28th, which is the beginning of the Room Selection process. However, the time is what matters when choosing where to live. #Lottery Room Selection is a lottery with priority based on: 1. Seniority (class year): Within each phase of the Room Selection process, priority is given to class year from highest to lowest class standing. 2. Size of Group: Room Selection priority is given to groups that can fill an entire room or suite. This is a direct response to feedback from residents that the old process made it difficult for groups of students to identify rooms or suites that would accommodate the entire group. 3. Location of Space Selected: Priority is given to those interested in returning to their current building, followed by those returning to their Quad / Area and lastly to those interested in moving to a new Quad / Area. Use the Roommate Profile tools to pair up with other residents who you know you d like to live with, or to search roommate profile information to locate possible roommate, suitemate and/or apartment mate matches with whom you d like to live. Note: All roommate or suitemate requests must be agreed upon by every resident selected, using the Roommate/Suitemate Acceptance screen. Only current residents are eligible to participate in Room Selection. #RoommateSelection *If you have any problems selecting roommates/suitemates or accepting an initiation please contact your RHD.
Room Selection Information Sessions Have questions about Room Selection, or need more information attend one or more of the upcoming Room Selection Information Sessions: March 21, 2016 Chapin Commons 7:00PM March 22, 2016 SSO Center Room 122 7:00PM March 23, 2016 LDS Center 7:00PM March 23, 2016 West Commons 8:30PM March 24, 2016 HDV/GLS Seminar 7:00PM Rooms 121-123 8-Semester Rule The University extends a guarantee of housing for 8 semesters to Undergraduates who entered the University as Freshmen. Students who enrolled as Transfers are guaranteed 6 semesters of housing. Students notified that they are affected by the 8 semester policy are not eligible to participate in Room Selection. These students may enroll on the 2016 2017 waiting list on or after May 2, 2016, but need to investigate alternative housing arrangements off-campus for the 2016 2017 academic year. Residents notified that they are impacted by the 6 or 8 semester policy may try to appeal the policy via the housing portal accompanied by supporting documentation to receive consideration. The deadline for appeals is March 11, 2016. Deadlines Pay particular attention to all dates and deadlines associated with the Room Selection process. Students who fail to successfully complete room Selection by 9 pm, April 7, 2016 will not receive housing for the 2016-2017 academic year.
How does the lottery work? All eligible residents will be assigned a selection time slot. The room selection time slot will remain the same throughout each Phase of the Room Selection Process. Priority in selection will be given base on class standing (Rising seniors / Graduate Students will have the earliest selection slots while freshmen / rising sophomores will have the later selection times). In general, when forming groups, the person with the earliest selection time should select spaces for the entire group. However, if another member of the group currently lives in the residence hall / apartment that the group wants to try and live in, it may be more beneficial for that resident to select spaces for the group. What if I miss Room Selection? If you do not sign up for a room during your timeslot, you will NOT receive housing for the 2016-2017 academic year. How does the actual selection process work? On the day and time that the group is eligible to select a space, the resident selecting the space for the group will log onto the housing portal. They will click the housing option that they are interested in trying to select and if eligible for that option will use the drop downs to filter on the available spaces. How will I know what spaces are available? You won t be able to see what s actually available from within the database until your actual selection appointment, but to help residents plan for selection, there s a real time, space filter that will let you review what s available as of that specific point in time: https://www.studentaffairs.stonybrook.edu/vacantspaces Use the space filter once or multiple times to predict availability prior to selecting an actual assignment. Remember though, all assignment selections must be made using the housing portal. What is the eligibility criteria for living in West Apartments & Toll Drive? Students meeting the following criteria are eligible to reside in the West Apartments & Toll Drive Residence Halls: U3 or U4 Class Standing Earned a cumulative Stony Brook GPA of 3.0 or greater Are in good judicial standing (no more than one Level 1 write-up that the student has been responsible for)
Graduate Students Graduate students are NOT required to pay the $200 Room Deposit, but must have a clear University Account in order to participate in this process. Those who wish to return to campus should participate in Room Selection. Graduate students may live in: Chapin Apartments Schomburg Apartments Building G of the West Apartments NOTE: All graduate student housing is based on a year-long contract, with the contract dates running from June 1-May 31, each year. Graduate students are responsible for paying rent THROUGH the summer months, whether they are physically living in their assigned space or not. Rent is billed on a monthly basis starting June 1st. Once approved, rates will be published in full format at www.stonybrook.edu/housing.
