Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. Locks of Love s mission is to return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children. The children receive hair prostheses free of charge or on a sliding scale, based on financial need. Several local haircare professionals also participated in the event, cutting the hair of the De La Salle students free of charge. De La Salle would like to thank its students for their heartfelt display of genuine concern for the wellbeing of others, as well as the local businesses for participating in this event. De La Salle Institute proudly announces that it recently welcomed student-athletes and coaches from the basketball program at Oakhill College, a Lasallian college preparatory high school located in Castle Hill, New South Wales, Australia. While at De La Salle for the day, the students from Oakhill were paired up with students from De La Salle and attended classes with their Meteor hosts. They also were able to meet with De La Salle student Ryan Mackie, a native of Australia. The student-athletes from Oakhill then participated in a basketball skills exercise in De La Salle s Parmer Ac tivity Center before returning to De La Salle that night to attend the Meteors boys basketball game. This was a wonderful experience for our students as well as our Lasallian friends from Oakhill College, De La Salle president Fr. Paul Novak, OSM said. Our students were honored to meet the student-athletes from Oakhill and to show them what life is like at De La Salle. N OW OPEN FRIDAY & SATURDAY This was a great opportunity for our students and for the Oakhill students to share their thoughts, ideas and 10AM TO 9:30PM ambitions and to find out that they have very similar interests and hopes despite being from separate countries. Woodson, (1875-1950), Historian The Aquinas Literacy Center is excited to start 2012 off by training a new group of volunteer tutors. Aquinas provides one-on-one English literacy and proficiency tutoring to a diverse pool of adult learners. Our adult learners get individualized instruction and are allowed to work at their own pace, ensuring real personal gains. Volunteers are not required to have any knowledge of a second language, nor do they need to be educators by profession. The volunteer community is just as diverse as the adult learner population, so we welcome you to consider joining us. Aquinas also has a fully operational Computer Learning Center, where we offer computer classes and ESL enrichment programs. Our next tutor-training workshop is January 20th from 6 PM - 9 PM and January 21st from 9 AM - 3 PM. Licensed & Insured-Free Estimates 773-581-5598 Seven Tips for Managing Osteoarthritis Naturally From a diminished quality of life, lost work productivity, and huge medical expenses, osteoarthritis can be a life-altering disease. However, there are safe options available to improve overall joint health. There are many safe, natural substances available that have been proven beneficial in alleviating the pain, stiffness, and other symptoms associated with the many forms of this arthritis, says Joseph Sweere, DC, a professor at Northwestern Health Sciences University in Minn. Because of the more than 100 classifications of this disease, it s important for people to have their arthritis diagnosed by a health professional to fully understand their specific condition and to receive the appropriate treatment. The most common form is osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease in the weight-bearing joints of the lower spine, hips, hands, knees, feet and ankles, affecting 46 million people in the United States, according to the Arthritis Foundation. Osteoarthritis is caused by the breakdown of cartilage and bones from previous injury and the wear and tear of life, resulting in pain, stiffness, inflammation, and limited movement of joints. The following natural options to treat osteoarthritis effectively are: - Proper nutrition. Lost cartilage doesn t self-recover, so having a diet high in calcium, vitamin C, vitamin D3 (cholecaciferol), and magnesium is important to increase the body s overall functionality and range of motion. Antioxidants, including grapeseed, pomegranate, and blueberry extracts also help, as well as fish oils with omega-3 fatty acids, says Dr. Sweere. -Other natural products. Many naturally occurring non-drug products have become readily available over the years and have proved beneficial for some people to reduce arthritis inflammation, says Dr. Sweere. These include chondroitin sulfate, glucosamine sulfate, MSM (methyl sulflmethane), and SAMe (S-adenosyl mehionine). Others include devil s claw root, evening primrose oil, feverfew, flax oil, and quercetin. All can be found at your local health food store and are considered safe when one follows the directions on the label. However, glucosamine and chondroitin are best when taken together, adds Dr. Sweere. - Pain-management therapies. Many successful, popular therapies, including mysofascial release therapy and the Graston Technique are practiced by chiropractors, physical therapists, and occupational therapists to relieve pain related to joint, muscle, and nerve disorders, says Dr. Sweere. Theraputetic massage and acupuncture are also safe and effective approaches to joint pain management, adds Dr. Sweere. Myofascial release therapy is a gentle, hands-on technique designed to release adhesions in the fascial system, a web of connective tissue that surrounds all the muscles. The Graston Technique involves manually applying stainless steel instruments to myofascial areas in order relieve pain and increase range of motion. - Maintain a healthy weight. Maintaining a normal body weight is a very important component to managing arthritis, says Dr. Sweere. The prevalence of osteoarthritis increases with more weight, which can wear down on the joints, allowing them to deteriorate more easily. - Exercise. Exercise and stretching programs can be beneficial for controlling arthritis symptoms, explains Dr. Sweere. Swimming is particularly beneficial because it allows for full-body movement without the stress of weight-bearing exercises while also aiding in weight management. Aquatherapy and hydrotherapy exercises are also helpful while in a swimming pool. - Reduce stress. Another important consideration for those with arthritis or joint inflammation, is to reduce the amount of mechanical, environmental or chemical, and psychological stress in their lives, says Dr. Sweere. Mechanical stress involves reducing strain on the joints, which might include avoiding activities like unnecessary squatting or kneeling and high impact sports or recreational activities. An example of chemical stress is smoke and tobacco, which lead to further degeneration of cartilage in our discs and in the spine. Psychological stress involves reducing prolonged states of anger, anxiety, and fear that in turn depletes the body s natural supply of cortisone, a powerful anti-inflammatory hormone that enables the body to protect the cartilage and lubrication system. -Apply heat. Applying moist heat to stiff, achy muscles and joints can ease arthritis pain, along with taking hot showers or whirlpool baths, says Dr. Sweere. Use caution when using heating pads and/or lamps, and remain awake and alert to avoid accidental overuse. Topical heat producing anti-inflammatory ointments, creams, sprays, and lotions containing capsicum (made from chill peppers) are highly effective.
