U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) released the following statement upon introducing the Patent Abuse Reduction Act: Patents play a critical role in the American tradition of invention and innovation. But abusive patent litigation, led by a growing number of patent trolls in search of a quick payday, threatens the innovation patents were created to protect. Patent litigation abuse saddles American innovators and job-creators, from start-ups to our nation s largest employers, with expensive litigation. It directs resources away from the research, development, wages and growth this country so desperately needs. This 21 st century problem requires a 21 st century solution. I have authored the Patent Abuse Reduction Act, which will modernize our patent litigation system and protect innovators unfairly targeted by trolls. This bill would require plaintiffs to disclose the substance of their claim and reveal their identities when they file their lawsuit; allow defendants to hale into court interested parties; bring fairness to the discovery process; and shift responsibility for the cost of litigation to the losing party. These reforms will deter patent litigation abusers without prejudicing the rights of responsible intellectual property holders. I want to extend my appreciation to Chairman Leahy for his coordination with me on this matter. I look forward to his continued support for patent reform.

CRUZ: I WANT COMMON-SENSE IMMIGRATION REFORM TO PASS; THIS BILL MAKES THE PROBLEM WORSE Offers Closing Remarks to Senate Judiciary Committee Markup U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) today voted against moving S. 744 out of the Senate Judiciary committee, citing concerns that the legislation does not effectively secure the border or adequately improve legal immigration, while failing to respect the rule of law. The bill passed out of the Senate Judiciary Committee 13-5. I want common sense immigration reform to pass. Our immigration system is broken and I think there are large bipartisan majorities that want it to pass, but this bill has two major problems, the senator said in his closing comments. Number one, it doesn t stop illegal immigration. If anything it makes the problem worse by not securing the border and by incentivizing future illegal immigration. Number two, I believe in its current form, the bill will not become law, and if Congress cannot pass immigration reform, that is a terrible outcome. Unfortunately, every Democrat on this committee voted against measures that would put real teeth into border security and that would have improved legal immigration. I hope when this bill goes to the floor of the Senate, those who want immigration reform to pass will look to bipartisan areas of cooperation to improve this bill and to fix the problem.
