March 20, 2013 Ms. Anne L. Hersch, AICP City Planner City of Albany, Community Development 1000 San Pablo Avenue Albany, CA 94706 RE: Sprint Site SF54XC016 - HOPKINS OF BERKELEY - ST. MARY'S CHS Technology Upgrade/Modification Location: 1294 Albina Avenue, Albany, CA Existing Facility: Sprint's wireless telecommunication facility is located on the rooftop of St. Mary's College High School and serves the neighboring residential areas in the City of Berkeley along Marin Avenue and Shattuck as well as the city of San Pablo to the west. The facility currently consists of a stealth enclosure housing 2 additional wireless carriers and multiple antennas. Technology Upgrade: Sprint proposes to remove and replace the three existing panel antennas with three (3) new 6' panel antennas and new remote radio units (RRUs) with filters all behind the existing stealth enclosure. The two existing equipment cabinets will be removed and replaced with two new Samsung equipment cabinets for the new 4G service and continuation of the legacy services. Reason for the Modifications: Sprint is undertaking a large expansion project to add coverage to the homes and businesses in Berkeley and San Pablo. As a part of this project. Sprint seeks to maintain and improve its existing coverage areas. This project will improve service to the existing network since maintains a strong customer base in this area and strives to maintain, expand and improve voice and data capacity for both current and potential customers. This network development will maintain public safety within the area and continue wireless service to areas that are currently served. This site in particular, located at the high school, is experiencing an extremely high call volume. In order to maintain quality coverage in the area, it is necessary to remedy this situation as soon as possible. Rather than construct a new tower, Sprint will modify this existing facility by swapping out the existing equipment for equipment of higher technology and capability. This unmanned facility will provide service to the area residents and businesses 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This site will serve as a backup to the existing land line service in the area and will provide for mobile communications so essential to modern day commerce and recreation. Mobile phone use has become an extremely important system for public safety. Along roads and highways without public call boxes, mobile phones are often the only means for emergency roadside communication. Motorists with disabled vehicles (or worse) can use their phone to call in and request appropriate assistance. With good cellular coverage along important roadways, emergency response is just a phone call away. Furthermore, as a back-up system to traditional land line phone service, mobile phones have proven to be extremely important during natural disasters and other catastrophes. If there are any additional questions regarding Sprint's technology upgrade, please do not hesitate to contact me at (925) 200-6417 or Email-Tony@TheCBRGroup.com. Please direct all notices and correspondences to me. Sincerely, Tony Trampetti (925) 200-6417 The CBR Group Inc. Tony@TheCBRGroup.com www.thecbrgroup.com
