Descendants of George Fulp Generation 1 1. GEORGE 1 FULP was born in 1718 in Heidelberg, Germany. He died on 26 Oct 1786 in Belews Creek, Surry, NC. He married MARY H PHILLIPS in 1752. She was born in 1722 in Berks, PA. She died in 1800 in Stokes County, NC. Notes for George Fulp: On September, Wednesday, the 25th, 1751, the ship Phoenix, John Suprrier, Captain, arrived in Philadelphia, Pa., from Rotterdam, the Neitherlands, via Portsmouth, England with 412 passengers. One of the passengers was Georg Volpp (pronounced Gay-org Folp). It is thought that Georg Volpp became our George Fulp. It was common to change German and other European names to names that were easier to spell and pronounce in English. Also, names were changed to "fit in" and possibly avoid secular conflicts that were common at this time. A director at the Moravian Archive in Winston Salem, North Carolina, advises that the German name Volpp is easily translated to Fulp. Also, another passenger on the same ship was Jacob Koehler. There are some indications that this person eventually settled in the Stokes County, North Carolina area near George Fulp. At George Fulps' request, a John Jacob Koehler (a Moravian Bishop) held his funeral services. After landing in Pennsylvania, George Fulp settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In 1752, he married Mary H. Phillips who was born in 1714 in Exeter, Berks County, Pennsylvania. They had five children. In the early 1760s, George moved his family to Stokes County, North Carolina about 15 miles north of what is now Winston-Salem in Forsyth County. Mary Fulp, wife and mother, died there about 1764. (Forsyth Co. was established from Stokes Co. in 1849, Stokes Co, from Surry Co. in 1789, and Surry County from Rowan Co. in 1771. Rowan Co. was established in 1753.) George Fulp died on October 26, 1786. His estate was probated in November 1786 in Surry County, North Carolina. He is buried in Belews Creek Cemetery in what is now Forsyth County. A report of George Fulp's death and funeral was recorded in the Salem Diary on October 26, 1786. It reads as follows: "Br. Koehler went to Belews Creek, sixteen miles from Salem, to hold the funeral of a friend of the Brethen. George Fulp by name. This man was born in 1718 and led a Christian life. The Brethren proclaimed the Gospel several times in his house. Before his end, he arranged that a Brother from Salem should conduct the funeral." By way of explanation, Salem, North Carolina was the headquarters of the Moravian Church on the southern American frontier. They referred to themselves as "the Brethen". The Moravians are an evangelical Christian denomination with roots going back to pre-reformation days in central Europe. Salem, now a part of modern-day Winston-Salem, continues to be the southern headquarters of the church. Many descendants of George and Mary Fulp still live near Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Numerous Fulps live in Forsyth and Stokes Counties in the vicinity of what is now White Road, commonly referred to as Walkertown-Belews Creek Road. Many Fulps participated in the westward migrations that took place throughout the 1800s. A group led by Valentine Fulp, son of second-generation Michael, went to Washington County, Virginia and later to Claiborne County, Tennessee, settling near the town of Tazewell. Included in the migration, but probably at a later date, were Valentine's brothers Solomon and Henry, and children of second generation Peter. Some names changed to Felps and then on to Phelps. This was probably the result of how the names sounded to different people that would read and write. Henry Fulp (Felps/Phelps) was born about 1799. He married Rhoda Lebow of Claiborne County in 1828. Sometime during the 1830's he and Rhoda moved to Blount County, Tennessee. He is shown with his wife and six children on the 1840 U. S. Census as Henry "Philips" and in the 1850 census as Henry "Phelps". Most of the Blount County Phelps are descended from Henry and Rhoda. From Tennessee, some of the family moved to Alabama, Kentucky and Missouri. Others, notably sons of George Fulp (son of second-generation Peter), went to Indiana and Illinois. Today the

Today the family is spread through much of the United States using several spellings of the name - Fulp, Fulps, Felps, Fultz, Phelps and other variations. An 1855 lawsuit in St Clair County, Illinois confirms the ancestrial lineage of Henry Fulp/Felps/Phelps. The court document clearly shows that Henry was a brother to the five known living children of second generation, Michael Fulp: George, Michael Jr, Peter, Catherine and Elizabeth. The data which follow were obtained from papers on file in the pension claim, p. 5278, based upon the military service of Peter Fulp. While living in Surry County, North Carolina, he enlisted and served as private with the North Carolina troops as follows: from January, February or March, 1776, three months in Captain Richard Goode's Company in Colonel Joseph Williams' Regiment; from sometime in the summer of 1776, four months in Captain Goode's Company in Colonel Williams' Regiment on an expedition against the Cherokee Indians; next he served three months under Captain Shepperd and was in the battle of Kings Mountain; in 1781, three months in Captain Minor Smith's Company in Colonel James Martin's Regiment and was discharged soon after the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. His name is listed as Valentine Fulps in the 1806 Personal Property Tax List for Washington County, Virginia. He is shown as owning one horse. Samuel, Abram, and Joshua Felps, all from Stokes County, North Carolina, were also listed in the tax list. In the 1810 Washington County, Virginia Federal Census, he is listed as Valentine Philps with his wife Susan and two small children.

Generation 3 (con't) Sometime after 1810, Valentine moved to Claiborne County, Tennessee and bought a farm on Straight Creek. In 1830, he is shown in the Federal Census as Valentine Felps. He is living with his wife Susan, three sons and six daughters. His son Henry Valentine has married and started his own family. Valentine's occupation is shown as a farmer. At one point he owned 330 acres of land worth $ 1,000. Numerous deed and other property transfers are recorded in Claiborne County, Tennessee with his name. Susan Anna Shelby Phelps died prior to 1850. Valentine is listed in the 1850 Claiborne County Census as Valentine Phelps. On 7 Jul 1851 when Valentine was 71, he married Anna Beeler in Claiborne County, Tennessee. Anna was born about 1794 in Virginia. In 1853 Valentine signed an affidavit to help John Saunders get a Revolutionary War Pension. Several deed transfers with Valentine's name are shown in the Claiborne County records. Notes for Henry Phelps: Henry Phelps is believed to have been born about 1799 in Stokes County, North Carolina. The 1850 Blounty County Census shows him as 51 years of age. His father was Michael Fulp (Phelps), son of George Fulp who migrated to America from Europe about 1750. Among the spellings of the name are Fulp, Fulps, Felp, Felps, and Phelps. Phelps is the contemporary spelling. Henry Phelps was part of the westward migration of some of the family in the early 1800s. His brother Valentine, with wife and children, had moved to Washington County, Virginia by 1810. By 1820 his brother Soloman had left North Carolina. Members of his Uncle Peter's family are reported to have migrated west during the period to Indiana and Illinois. The record of a court hearing in Illinois involving inheritance of land provides the most definitive evidence that Henry Phelps was the son of second-generation Michael Fulp. Henry was identified in the document as one of five Felps siblings who were the sole living heirs of their brother George's estate. The six siblings are clearly identified as sons and daughters of the senior Michael Fulp (see The Phelps-Fulp Connection by Thomas A Phelps dated 11/10/10). By 1830 Henry Phelps and brothers Valentine and Soloman had settled in Claiborne County, Tennessee. Henry had married Rhoda Lebow. They had two children and are listed on the U. S. Census of that year as living with or next door to Rhoda's father Daniel Lebow. By 1840 Henry Phelps with his wife and six children had moved to Blount County, Tennessee. The name on the U.S. Census for 1840 was misspelled as "Philips". Ten years later on the 1850 Census, he is listed as "Phelps". Henry and Rhoda had eleven children and lived in the Middlesettlements Community of Blount County. Henry Phelps died sometime before 1860. Family records show that during a smallpox epidemic in the community, Henry dug graves for the victims. It is believed that as one of the few able bodied men in the community, he kept an empty grave dug in preparation for the next death. When he became ill and died of the disease, he was buried in a grave that he had dug himself. Rhoda Phelps died in 1880. It is thought that Rhoda and Henry Phelps are buried in the cemetery at Middlesettlements Methodist Church in Blount County, Tennessee where there are several older unmarked graves.
