Page 6-LAWNDALE Bilingual News-Thursday, September 15, 2016 The Chichimeca War By Daniel Nardini With the end of the Aztec Empire and the Spanish destruction of Tenochtitlan (the Aztec's capital) in 1521, many history textbooks teach us that the conquest of what is now Mexico ended. This was far from the case. As the Spanish went further north and south, they encountered more resistance to their rule. In the south, the Spanish would encounter the Mayans who resisted the Spanish for over 300 years. The Mayan resistance would in fact continue into the 19th Century after Mexico gained its independence. In the north, the Spanish encountered fierce resistance among certain peoples related to the Aztecs by language and to an extant custom. Among those who resisted the Spanish were the Acaxee, the Tepehuan, and the Chichimecas. The Spanish over-estimated their own strength and prowess, and under-estimated the native Mexican peoples they would fight. The Spanish fought the Acaxee in the Acaxee Rebellion (1601-1603), the Tepehuan in the Tepehuan Revolt (1616-1620), and the Chichimecas in the Chichimeca War (1550-1590). Of these three, the Chichimeca War was the bloodiest for both sides. The Spanish first encountered the Chichimecas in the 1540's. The Chichimecas were a nomadic to semi-nomadic people who were loosely organized. The Spanish tried to enslave them and take over their territory which was rich in silver mines. The Chichimecas resented this, and this led to war. The Spanish could easily defeat the Chichimecas in open battle, but the Chichimecas were adept at guerrilla warfare. The Continued on page 7

The Second Spanish Attempt to Conquer Mexico By Daniel Nardini It is not very well known that the Spanish Empire tried in fact to retake Mexico after Mexico succeeded in gaining independence in 1821. Even though Mexico had gained independence from Spain in 1821, Spain Chichimeca War... Continued from page 6 Chichimecas would attack Spanish armies and settlements when the Spanish least expected and slaughter whole towns. This actually left the Spanish on the defensive, and they had to drive deep into Chichimeca territory to try and pacify them. This did not work. The Spanish at first tried using its Indian allies to fight the Chichimecas for them. The Spanish Indian allies had no luck against the Chichimecas. Then the Spanish tried the policy of "fire and blood;" a policy of slaughtering as many Chichimecas as possible and destroying their homes. This also did not work. If anything, it resolved to make the Chichimecas attack the Spanish more. Then the Dominicans, did not officially recognize Mexico's independence. Spain, for that matter, did not recognize the independence of any of the Latin American countries in South as well as Central America. The Spanish Empire refused to accept Continued on page 10 one of the Catholic orders of the Roman Catholic Church in New Spain (Mexico), resolved to try and defeat the Chichimecas by "rewarding" them with land, supplies and weapons for self-defense. This actually worked, and gradually the Spanish were able to win over those Chichimecas who allied with them and defeat those Chichimecas who continued to fight against them. This Spanish strategy worked, but it came at a price for the Spanish who lost over 200 of their own and 2,000 Indian allies. The Chichimeca War showed that the Spanish were vulnerable, and in the next 200 years, Spanish rule would again be challenged. Spain did not have the troops, the ships, or the money to retake any of the newly independent South American countries. However, this did not stop the Spanish Empire from trying to retake Mexico. Why did Spain want to reconquer Mexico? Mexico was one of the richest parts of its former empire. Mexico's gold and silver mines had made Spain the richest country in Europe for 200 years. Plus, Mexico was strategically placed in North America, and was opposite of Cuba which remained a Spanish possession. From Cuba, it was possible for Spain to retake Mexico.. Mexico was one possession that Spain was not going to give up. So the Spanish Crown gave the go ahead for Spanish General Isidro Barradas to retake Mexico. The Spanish invasion fleet consisted of 3,586 soldiers on the Spanish flagship the Sovereign along with two frigates, two gunboats, and 15 transport ships. They landed in Cabo Rojo, near Tampico (in Tamaulipas state) on July 26, 1829. Mexican President Vicente Guerrero, alarmed at the Spanish attempt to reconquer Mexico, sent Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna to meet the invading Spanish force. On September 10-11, 1829, the Mexican forces engaged the Spanish forces at Tampico. The Spanish, with a much smaller force, was beaten, and had lost 908 men. Spanish General Barradas was forced to sign the capitulation of Pueblo Viejo, which formally recognized Mexico's independence. It would not be until 1836 that Spain officially recognized Mexico's independence, although the Battle of Tampico was its last attempt at reconquering Mexico. This was one of three invasions of Mexico in the 19th Century. The other two were the American invasion during the U.S.-Mexico War (1846-1848), and the French invasion from 1861-1867. Despite these invasions, Mexico was able to maintain its independence.

Tech Program Helps At-Risk Youth to create and design websites; leverage social media to build skills and enhance communications; and find potential employees in order to get jobs in the growing technology industry. An implementation and process evaluation of the program is being conducted by MDRC, a nonpartisan social policy research organization. In addition to looking at pre/post survey data for changes among Youth-Led Tech participants on factors such as future orientation and self-esteem, MDRC will also collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative data to learn how the program operates on the ground.
