Recap 2 2 3 4 5 6 Tarheel Technology Highlights V O L U M E 3 4, I S S U E 2 From The President s Desk Greetings fellow medical imaging professionals, I am thankful to have this opportunity, not only to serve as your president, but to grow and develop both personally and professionally as I step forward to uphold the traditions and values of this organization. The new Board of Directors has faced challenges and adversity from the start. We have a lot of work to do and we are committed to get the job done. We have asked you to help us to understand how the NCSRT, Inc. can better serve you and the reply is consistent, Education, Networking and a sense of Belonging. Many of you suggest that change is necessary while others are content with the status quo. Student Update The New Board values change and we recognize that human resources are our most valuable asset. The work of the non-profit board cannot be achieved without the support of our members. Society has become so dependent on technology and instant gratification that we frequently miss opportunities to share and connect with people who can bring change and add value to our lives. The interesting paradigm here is that we are no longer on a one way street. To accomplish our goals, Committee Chairs, Committee members and volunteers met on June 30, 2012 for strategic planning to enhance membership retention and provide S U M M E R 2 0 1 2 connections, awareness and information, thus paving a two way street to meet the needs of our members and accomplish, the mission of the NCSRT, Inc. Together we can tear down the barriers of progress and empower our members to enable the changes that need to occur. The NCSRT, Inc offers a platform to exercise leadership skills and identify personal strengths. The road to success is a two way street and I encourage you to join us in our endeavors to move the NCSRT, Inc. forward and discover new potential in yourselves. With kind regards, I am Yours truly, Vicki Burnett, MHA, RT (R) (T) President, NCSRT, Inc. V O L U M E 3 4, I S S U E 2 In Memoriam JAMES AARON MILLER August 19, 1936 March 10, 2012 Jim Miller and his family came to North Carolina in from Burlington, Iowa to assume the position of Chief Radiologic Technologists at Duke Hospital in 1966. Jim quickly became active in the NCSRT, serving on many In Memoriam committees. In 1969 was elected Treasurer, 1970 elected 2 nd. V.P., 1971 elected President Elect, and President in 1972. In 1973 Jim switched careers and became a project manager in the construction industry. He retired in 1999. Jim was a strong supporter of his staff and their involvement in the profession. He felt that those who wanted to be involved as worker bees, lecturers, exhibitors or office holders, funds and time could and would be James Aaron Miller P A G E 3 provided to aid their participation. Many technologists owe their professional beginnings to Jim. Jim is survived by three children, James Jr., Joan and Jennifer and three grandchildren Sarah, Kristen and John. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy L. Miller who was also a technologist at Duke. Everyone who knew Jim will treasure his stories and keen sense of humor. ~ Frances Apple Edwin Huss Shoaf, Sr. EDWIN HUSS SHOAF, SR. December 31, 1921 January 17, 2012 It is with sorrow that we say farwell to Edwin Ed Shoaf. Ed graduated from Charlotte Central High School in 1939 and attended NC State College, graduating with a degree in electrical engineering. After graduation Ed enlisted in the Army to serve his country during World War II and attained the rank of Captain in the Signal Corps. After discharge Ed joined Picker X-Ray Corporation and remained with the company in sales, service, and administration until retirement in 1985. I know many of you will not remember Ed but for the few of us who knew him will remember a soft spoken, gentle man who was never too busy to help a staff or student technologists with a problem. Ed is survived by his wife, Frances White Shoaf and three sons Edwin Jr., Robert & Stephen Shoaf. ~ Frances Apple
