THE GREAT WELSH DIET EXPERIMENT: ONE YEAR ON Monday, August 4, BBC One Wales, 8.30pm #LiveLongerWales Last year, Swansea fitness guru Tara Hammett took on six people from the offices of the DVLA who, by their own admission, were extremely inactive with pretty uninspiring diets. Tracy only walked from her car to her desk, while Kirsty wouldn't eat anything that smelled green. Tara put her team of six on a month-long boot camp, intending to turn their lives around. By the end of the month, the results were dramatic, lives had been changed and the impact on the team was obvious for all to see. In this one-off documentary, Tara is on a mission to gather the group back together to see if they have committed to her strict schedule or if they have they slipped back to their old ways. Tara is delighted that most of her team have stuck to her suggestions, while Ashley has gone a step further and is now almost qualified as a professional fitness coach himself - committed to passing on Tara's secrets to others for the rest of his career. Another, Kirsty, overhauled her diet completely when she received the shocking news, shortly after filming finished, that she had thyroid cancer. And Tracy, who Tara remembers as the heaviest member of the team, is the outstanding failure of the group - she has actually put on weight. Tara decides that only a really radical plan is going to work for Tracy and she insists that she moves in and lives Tara s life in a last-ditch attempt to reboot her lifestyle forever. Anwen Locke
LIVE LONGER WALES: HELEN S HEART Wednesday, August 6, BBC One Wales, 7pm #LiveLongerWales We last saw the larger-than-life Whewell family on our TV screens last year, when the Abersychan family took part in BBC Wales entertaining but thought-provoking Family Life Swap series. The programme followed the whole family trying to lose weight by swapping lives with the uber-fit and healthy Thompson family from Cardiff. The Whewells return for this one-off 60-minute documentary. In Live Longer Wales: Helen s Heart, we follow the extraordinary story of Helen as she and her family come to terms with her diagnosis and the fight ahead. Helen has a heart condition and needs an operation to correct it, and her task is to lose weight in order to have this crucial operation. Set eight weeks to lose two stone, Helen s lifethreatening condition becomes a life-affirming journey of equal parts humour, frustration and tears, as she tries everything from body piercings to belly-dancing in order to lose the weight. And in an unconventional world, stuffed with unconventional diets, Helen s own path to enlightenment might just take the biscuit. Anwen Locke
THE WELSH WEIGHT CLINIC: THE NEXT GENERATION Thursday, August 7, BBC One Wales, 10.35pm #LiveLongerWales This one-off documentary follows three young people who are battling the effects of Wales obesity crisis. The statistics paint a shocking picture - one in three Welsh youngsters are overweight or obese, but there's only one weight management clinic in the entire country. Based at Ebbw Vale's Aneurin Bevan hospital, the clinic is seeing increased numbers of young patients coming through the doors. Budding DJ and computer game enthusiast, 34-stone James from Aberdare admits that he s a food addict. Dr Nadim Haboubi, head of the weight management clinic, suggests that James and his family consider opting for a bariatric or weight loss operation - an unusual step, as only 10% of the doctor s patients are referred for surgery, and rarely anyone as young. This programme follows James journey to make this life-changing decision. Former care worker Stacey from Blaenavon has always struggled with her weight and is also battling with depression. Stacey is trying to change her diet - avoiding soft drinks and crisps - and she s supported by the clinic s psychotherapist, Janet, to try and come up with strategies to avoid unhealthy snacking. Haike from Cwmbran is saving up for a wedding and a new home in the coming year, as well as holding down two jobs. She s had to change the types of food she s eating, and although there s not much time to prepare meals her mother s helping out. She s also supported by her fiance, who s started to hit the gym with her over the past few months. Anwen Locke
