The Transactions publishes the edited texts of a selection of the lectures delivered to the Society as part of its annual programme, as well as additional peer-reviewed articles. The Editor invites writers and scholars to submit articles, in Welsh or in English, on topics relevant to the aims of the Society, to be considered for publication. Selection is based on the process of peer review by specialists in the relevant fields. Note to contributors: Articles should be submitted as an electronic file (Word document) sent by e-mail to the Editor. Articles should normally be no more than 8000 words, including footnotes. The Transactions uses the MHRA style guide (Modern Humanities Research Association). 5 CYFRANWYR / CONTRIBUTORS Dianne Edwards is a research professor in the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences at Cardiff University. A graduate of Girton College, Cambridge, she is best-known for her investigations of fossils of early land plants and the considerable impact of this vegetation on the evolution of animals and atmosphere. Though her research has focused on the UK, she also collaborates with colleagues in China and South America. Gerald Gabb taught secondary history in Llansamlet, Swansea, for ten years before becoming Education Officer in the Swansea Museums Service from 1983 to 2009. He edits the annual journal, Minerva / Journal of Swansea History, on behalf of the Royal Institution of South Wales. He has published a number of books and articles on the history of Swansea and was awarded an Honorary D.Litt. at Swansea University in 2017. Yn frodor o Abertawe, ac yn fab i J. He worked as a teacher and translator before becoming a lecturer at Swansea University. He researched into the use of Welsh among young people and aspects of education and sociolinguistics. He has written around twenty books for learners of Welsh, and his book, Yr Erlid, won the Welsh Book of the Year prize in 2013. He was one of the founders of Tŷ Tawe, Swansea s Welsh Centre, and chair of Parents for Welsh Medium Education. After studying for a degree in History at the University of Lampeter, she moved to Cardiff University and chose Lady Llanover as the subject of her doctoral thesis. Today she lives in Durham, in north-east England, and works in the Beamish Museum.]

6 Nicolas Jacobs was for more than thirty years a Fellow and Tutor in English at Jesus College, Oxford, having previously been a lecturer at Balliol and St John s Colleges and then at the University of Bristol. He has published extensively on Old and Middle English language and literature, and increasingly over the past twenty years on mediaeval Welsh, most notably with Early Welsh Gnomic and Nature Poetry (2012). He now divides his time between Oxford and Bangor. Dafydd Johnston is Director of the University of Wales Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies in Aberystwyth and Editor of the Dictionary of Welsh Biography. Formerly Professor of Welsh at Swansea University, he led the AHRCfunded project based there which produced the online edition of the poetry of Dafydd ap Gwilym, www.dafyddapgwilym.net, and was main editor of the print volume, Cerddi Dafydd ap Gwilym (2010). Among his recent publications is The Literature of Wales (2017). Rhys Kaminski-Jones is a postdoctoral researcher working on eighteenth-century Welsh/British identities and Romantic Celticism. He was recently awarded his Ph.D. by the University of Wales Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies for a thesis entitled True Britons: Ancient British Identities in Wales and Britain, 1680 1815. Peter Lord has published and broadcast extensively in both Welsh and English on the visual culture of Wales and curated major exhibitions for national institutions. Between 1998 and 2003 he published the three volumes of The Visual Culture of Wales, which is regarded as the authoritative text on the subject. In 2013 he published an autobiography, Relationships with Pictures. His latest book, The Tradition: A New History of Welsh Art 1400 1990, was published by Parthian in 2016. Richard Meredith is a graduate of University College of North Wales Bangor, who spent his working career as a biology teacher in the Midlands before moving into local politics (following in the footsteps of Welsh ancestors). He has always maintained close links with his home town of Llanidloes, where he has spent many years pursuing a long-standing interest in genealogy and local history. This has included restoring the town s first lock-up which narrowly avoided holding one of his ancestors during the Chartist Riots of 1839. Lieutenant-General Jonathon Riley commanded British and allied troops at all levels from platoon to corps, on operations in Northern Ireland, Central America, the Balkans, Sierra Leone, Iraq, and Afghanistan from 1973 to 2009. He was Master of the Royal Armouries from 2009 to 2012 and is now Visiting Professor in War Studies at King s College London. He holds a PhD in History, is a fellow of the Royal Historical and Royal Geographical Societies, and has to date published 22 books on military history and biography.

7 Sir John Meurig Thomas was born and brought up in the Gwendraeth Valley in Carmarthenshire. Winning a state scholarship from the Gwendraeth Grammar School, he completed a degree in Chemistry at University College Swansea and went on to further research at Queen Mary College London. Senior academic posts include Professor and Head of the Department of Chemistry at Aberystwyth University (1969 1978) and Head of the Department of Physical Chemistry and Professorial Fellow of King s College at the University of Cambridge. He was Director of the Royal Institution of Great Britain from 1986 to 1991 and held the appointment of Master of Peterhouse, University of Cambridge, from 1993 to 2002. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1977 and was knighted for his services to chemistry in 1991. Sir John was awarded the Royal Medal by the Royal Society in 2016 for his pioneering contributions to catalysis. M. Wynn Thomas is Professor of English and Emyr Humphreys Professor of Welsh Writing in English at Swansea University. A Fellow of the British Academy and a founding Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales, he was awarded an OBE in 2007 for services to the two cultures of Wales. He has published over two dozen books on the poetry of Walt Whitman and on the two literatures of Wales. The latest are All That is Wales (2017) and Cyfan-Dir Cymru (2017). John V. Tucker is Professor of Computer Science and Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor at Swansea University. He is a founding Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales and a member of Academia Europaea. His interest in the history of science and technology, and especially in that of Wales, is longstanding. He is an editor of the book series Scientists of Wales (University of Wales Press) and History of Computing (Springer); he is founder and curator of Swansea University s History of Computing collection.
