University Library UBU Heidelberglaan 3 3584 CS Utrecht http://wwwlibraryuunl/ This black box is both praised and hated Let s hear the architect: It is a place where people can work in a concentrated fashion, but also one where they can meet others without the need of any other stimulation except the atmosphere that the building radiates The book depots divide the space into zones interconnected by stairs and slopes All in black figured concrete on which a partly double-glazed facade to which a silk-screened figurative pattern has been applied in order to let natural light in Based on the idea that silent communication is important in a building where there is hardly any talking, the atmosphere had emphasis on creating a sense of security That was essential for choosing a black interior A light, shiny floor provides enough reflection to illuminate the books and white tables make it possible to read The bar, lounge, reception, auditorium, desks, are all fitted with red rubber, thereby breaking down the mono-functionality of the library program 9-2004 30000 m² Wiel Arets s Universiteit van Utrecht Naomi mo-fr: 0900-2230 sa: 0900-1800 su: 1200-1800 From Utrecht Central Station take bus 11 or 12 towards "De Uithof", the university campus http://wwwmimoaeu/users/papastervski/guides/utrecht/ 2
Basket Bar Genevelaan 9 3584 CC Utrecht http://wwwthebasketnl/ The Utrecht University Campus, according to its best tradition, gives birth to another provocative and irreverent building: the BasketBar, which consists of a flat basket ground over a grand café room, as 15 x 15 meters flat extension of the previous bookstore, just on the back of the OMA's Educatorium In the early 90's, OMA prepared the master plan for the renewed University Campus, which encompasses a lot of Dutch Second Modernity's exemplary buildings such as Mecanoo's Faculty of Economics and Management, Neutelings Riedijk's Minnaert Building, UN Studio's NMR Laboratory and OMA's Educatorium All these buildings are spread on a large site called De Uithof at the edge of the city, hosting about 30000 among staff and students The BasketBar, together with the Educatorium, represented the only extensive meeting place for all this population, until the large black library was built 2-2003 1231 m² NL s Universiteit van Utrecht Naomi Mo - Fri from 10:30 till late Weekends are for arranged groups http://wwwmimoaeu/users/papastervski/guides/utrecht/ 3
photo: Bjorn Utpott Minnaert Leuvenlaan 4 3584 CE Utrecht All circulation space of this central university building has been concentrated in one big hall on the "piano nobile" of the building It constitutes the communal gathering place and living room for all staff and students in this part of the campus and gives access to the restaurant, the study centre and the laboratories In the middle the hall has a large pond of 10 x 50 metres that collects the rainwater and is used as a cooling device for the building This hall is actually outside The facade of the building is clad with undulating sprayed concrete of pigmented red earth color The Minnaert Building is part of the Faculties of Geosciences, Physiscs and Astronomy Hence the brown earthy colors on the outside, and the cave-like feeling that arouses in the central hall Profdr Marcel Gilles Jozef Minnaert (Brugge, 1893) was astronomic and chemo-physicist photo: Bjorn Utpott 1997 9000 m² Interior architect, Contractor Structural engineer Neutelings Riedijk MI_MOA JP van Eesteren ABT Universiteit van Utrecht To get to and around the University campus, you can take bus city lines number 11 and 12 from Utrecht Central Station http://wwwmimoaeu/users/papastervski/guides/utrecht/ 4

photo: VPRO Villa VPRO Sumatralaan 49 1217 GP Hilversum http://wwwvpronl/ The VPRO is a public broadcasting corporation and operates in various media, producing radio and television programmes, filling digital theme channels, operating an innovative website, publishing a programme guide and organising cultural activities The VPRO has a rather special position within the broadcasting system: Enthusiasm, curiosity and quality has more value than ratings The VPRO takes its public task seriously but with slight stubbornness, purposefully choosing those programmes and topics that the other broadcasting companies pass over It aims to surprise, inspire awe, enrage and inform, as well as touch people, make them think, laugh and put things into perspective It provides the opportunity to explore, but also to see the world around them, the VPRO is in continuous dialogue with its articulate and critical target group This pioneering and spirit manifests itself in more than just the programming; the Villa VPRO is a physical embodiment of all the above elements photo: Bjorn Utpott 1997 10500 m² Structural engineer Structural engineer MVRDV Arup Pieters Bouwtechniek VPRO MI_MOA http://wwwmimoaeu/users/papastervski/guides/utrecht/ 7
photo: Ernst Moritz photo: Dirk Verwoerd Rietveld Schröderhuis Prins Hendriklaan 50 3583 Utrecht http://wwwrietveldschroderhuisnl/ A visit to the Rietveld Schröder House remains a fascinating experience This house is the only building ever realized on the basis of the architectural principles of De Stijl Typical features are the use of the Stijl colours red, blue and yellow, in combination with white, grey and black, the relation between interior and exterior and the unity between the free-standing pieces of furniture and the fitted parts of the interior According to Rietveld and Schröder one had to have an active attitude to life For them too living in a home is a conscious act The furnishing of the house reflects this conviction The occupant has to perform a transaction for every activity: the bathroom is created by opening out a wall, while the sleeping areas could be screened off with sliding walls, and privacy was obtained by placing shutters in front of the windows The house is literally a machine for living in photo: Jannes Linders 1924 Gerrit Rietveld Truus Schröder MI_MOA On Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday you can visit the Rietveld Schröderhuis The house can only be visited with a tour of max 10 people You can reserve a place in the tour by sending an email to rhreserveringen[at]centraalmuseumnl There is a special Rietveld bus that leaves from the Centraal Museum at 1145, 1245, 1345 and 1445 hr It takes you to all Rietveld-designs and back to the Centraal Museum (address: Nicolaaskerkhof 10, Utrecht) http://wwwmimoaeu/users/papastervski/guides/utrecht/ 8
photo: Ernst Moritz photo: Ernst Moritz Erasmuslaan Erasmuslaan 5-11 3584 AZ Utrecht http://wwwrietveldschroderhuisnl/erasmuslaanengjsp After the Rietveld-Schröder-House Rietveld designed a row of 4 mansions on the Erasmuslaan in Utrecht in 1931 This block is on the far side of the ring road The contrast is enormous: with their large quantities of glass, white stucco and steel shutters, these houses complied totally with the aesthetic ideal of the Nieuwe Bouwen movement, the Dutch functionalist architecture of the 1930s The brilliant colours of the Stijl period have vanished completely Number 9 was designed in October 1931 by Gerrit Rietveld and Truus Schröder as a model home On this occasion Rietveld presented a number of furniture designs from previous years He hoped that, given sufficient interest, the firm of Metz & Co would produce these pieces of furniture in series This however only occurred with the tube-framed chairs Erasmuslaan 9 was purchased in 1999 and restored by the Hendrick de Keyser Society The Centraal Museum has reconstructed the original model interior and opened the premises to the public photo: Dirk Verwoerd 1931 Gerrit Rietveld Truus Schröder MI_MOA You may visit the Rietveld Schröder House and the Model Home on the Erasmuslaan 9 on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday Reservations are strongly recommended Make a reservation by emailing to rhreserveringen[at]centraalmuseumnl See also wwwcentraalmuseumnl The Centraal Museum takes care of the transport in a luxury 'Rietveld route' shuttle bus This bus leaves the Centraal Museum at fixed times: 1145 am, 1245 pm, 145 pm and 245 pm It takes you to all Rietveld-designs and back to the Centraal Museum (address: Nicolaaskerkhof 10, Utrecht) http://wwwmimoaeu/users/papastervski/guides/utrecht/ 9
photo: Piotr Krajewski photo: Viktor Ramos Educatorium Leuvenlaan 19 3584 CE Utrecht http://wwwuunl Situated in the centre of the University Campus the Uithof, just outside the centre of Utrecht, this building is most famous for its use of concrete The concrete construction of the building folds and forms the floor, wall and ceiling in one curved motion In the ceiling, steel reinforcement bars emerge from the exposed concrete slab Steel and concrete dissociate allowing each material to work at optimum efficiency: the 20cm thick concrete slab is made to span 21 metres "Composed of two planes which fold to accommodate a range of distinct programs including an outdoor plaza, two lecture halls, cafeteria and a testing facility Planes interlock to create a single trajectory in which the entire university experience socialization, learning, examination is encapsulated" Bad detailing or lack of proper maintenance has caused the facade to look old and worn out, even after a couple of years photo: Piotr Krajewski 1997 11000 m² Structural engineer Contractor OMA - Rem Koolhaas ABT BAM University of Utrecht NGHM The building is public and open to visit freely, at workdays on office hours For guided tours, contact the Utrecht ure Centre at aorta@aortanu and tours@aortanu or call +31 (0)30 232 1686 Buslines 11, 12 and 12-S go from Utrecht Central Station to the Uithof university campus Call the reception of the Educatorium at +31 (0) 30 253 8530 http://wwwmimoaeu/users/papastervski/guides/utrecht/ 10

Education Department Padualaan 3584 CH Utrecht The Department of Education (FE) forms the westerly closure of the "kashba-zone" of the Uithof In this hundred-metre-wide strip, buildings bunch-up close together with patios and rooflights providing daylight penetration The colourful west façade gives the HU a face towards the city, makes the building scale-less and abstract, while also alluding to the speed of the traffic racing past The façade is an expression of the occupants and their diverse activities, a metaphor for the HU's multifaceted community photo: Ideen dom 2008 17121 m² Ector Hoogstad en Hogeschool Utrecht MI_MOA http://wwwmimoaeu/users/papastervski/guides/utrecht/ 13
