PREVIOUS EVENTS 08-09 July 2013 Hilda Geiringer Lecture Series 2013 C.A.S.E. and CRC 649 Economic Risk initiated the Hilda Geiringer Lecture Series to honour the mathematical and statistical contributions of Hilda Geiringer. She was the first woman to receive an academic appointment in mathematics at the University of Berlin in the 1920's and therefore is a role model for women in science. Distinguished female scientists are invited to give a talk at the Hilda Geiringer Lecture Series. The 2013 Lecture entitled Nonstationary Panels were given by Yoosoon Chang on 8 and 9 July 2013 in the Festsaal of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Yoosoon Chang is a Professor of Economics at Indiana University Bloomington. Her research interests are in, time series and panel data models and their applications in macroeconomics and finance. She is an associate editor of Time Series Econometrics, a programme committee member of the International Symposium on Econometric Theory and Applications, an external fellow of the Granger Centre for Time Series Econometrics at Nottingham University, and an external associate of the Centre for Econometric Analysis at Cass Business School in London. Yoosoon Chang gave four excellent lectures on the following topics; Panel Unit Root, Panel Cointegration, Analysis of State Distributions Using Pseudo Panels and Panels at High Frequency. It was a pleasure to welcome Yoosoon Chang and to have had the benefit of her research. NEWS Nikolaus Hautsch accepted the offer of a professorship from the University of Vienna, starting on 31 August 2013. We wish him every success with this new venture and all the best for the future. Wolfgang Härdle gave a talk on the 13 of August 2013 at the Risk Management Institute of the National University of Singapore on Risk Patterns and Correlated Brain Activities. From 2 to 13 September 2013 he visited Rijeka University in Croatia as part of the Erasmus exchange programme. He also gave a talk about CoVaR with very high dimensional risk factor at the international Workshop Frontiers in Time Series Analysis with Applications to Economics and Finance on 19 September 2013 and attended the Oberwolfach Meeting from 22 to 28 September 2013 on "Complex Time Series Analysis"..Brenda López-Cabrera attended the 40 th Seminar of the European Group of Risk and Insurance Economists (EGRIE) in Paris from 16 to 18 September 2013, where she gave a presentation on State Price Densities implied from weather derivatives with Wolfgang Härdle and Hui-Wen Teng. She was accepted in the programme ProFiL ( Professionalisation of Women in Research and Teaching ) offered by the Universities in Berlin. Christian Schade took part in the Summer Residence Week for Entrepreneurship Scholars from 14 to 20 July 2013 at Tempelton College, University of Oxford, England. He also attended the ICABEEP/IAREP/SABE conference from 25 to 29 July 2013 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA and held two lectures: Measuring Multidimensional Preferences in Non-consumer Choice: Results of a Conjoint Analysis with Farmers and Perceived freedom of choice in different choice scenarios, an experimental investigation. Moreover Christian Schade participated in the annual meeting of the research group Konsum & Verhalten in Berlin from the 19 to 21 September 2013. 2

He also took part in the 53 th annual conference of the society for Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften des Landbaues e.v. (GEWISOLA) from the 25 to 27 September 2013 and held a lecture within the framework of the Pre-Conference Workshop Analysis of Structural Change in Agriculture - State of the Art and Recent Developments with the topic Behavioral Foundations of Structural Change. Joachim Gassen visited Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane from 10 to 27 September 2013. He gave a talk entitled Research Design and Causal Inference on 16 September and a talk entitled Current Trends and Topics in Financial Accounting Research on 25 September during his stay. Thorsten Dickhaus attended the 8th International Conference on Multiple Comparison Procedures (MCP 2013 Southampton) from 8 to 11 July 2013 and gave an invited talk on Multiple Wald tests with applications to dynamic factor models. He also attended the 29 th European Meeting of Statisticians (EMS 2013 Budapest) from 20 to 25 July 2013 and participated from 19 to 20 September 2013 at the German Statistical Week at FU Berlin. At both conferences, he presented work on Simultaneous Statistical Inference in Dynamic Factor Models. From 24 to 26 September 2013 he attended the International Conference on Simultaneous Inference 2013 at Leibniz University Hannover and gave an invited talk on Copula-based models in multiple hypothesis testing. Daniel Klapper visited the meeting of the jury for the GWA Effie Award in Frankfurt/Main on 13 September 2013. He hosted the annual conference of the research group Konsum & Verhalten at HU from 19 to 21 September. Martin Odening and Silke Hüttel organised a pre-conference workshop Analysis of Structural Change in Agriculture - State of the Art and Recent Developments at the annual conference of the German Society of Economic and Social Sciences in Agriculture (GEWISOLA) on 25 September 2013 in Berlin. They also initiated a new research project named Price formation in agricultural land market which is funded by the DFG. Martin Odening attended the ÖGA/SGA from 12 to 14 September 2013 at the ETH in Zurich, Switzerland and gave a presentation entitled: A Direct Test on Speculative Bubbles in Agricultural Commodity Prices. Silke Hüttel held a lecture with the topic Dynamic Efficiency Under Risk: An Application to the German Dairy Sector at the Annual Meeting of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association in Washington D.C. from 4 to 6 August 2013 and the Brown Bag Seminar at the Centre for the Study of Institutional Diversity at Arizona State University on 26 August 2013. Furthermore she presented Forced Sales and Farmland Prices at the Morrison School of Agribusiness Seminar Series at ASU on 28 August 2013. Bengt-Arne Wickström participated in the conference of the German Economic Association - Public Finance Group in Freiburg in May 2013. He led the PhD student seminar with participants from the HU and Freie Universität Bozen, Italy in July 2013. He took part in the 22 nd Silvaplana Workshop in Political Economy in Switzerland in July 2013. Together with Michele Gazzola, Prof. Wickström was the co-organiser of the CESifo Workshop on the Economics of Language Policy in Venice in July 2013. He took part on 2 nd Sektionentagung of the Society for Applied Linguistics in Aachen in September 2013. He participated and gave lectures during the ISSEM/ICEM in Havanna, Cuba during September and October 2013. Axel Werwatz organised the Young Statisticians Workshop of the German Statistical Society. The workshop was held on 16 and 17 September 2013 at FU Berlin as part of the Statistische Woche, the Society's annual meeting. Latest C.A.S.E. member Weining Wang was a visiting scholar at University College London from 1 to 30 September 2013. Michael C. Burda attended, as a discussant, the session: A Monetary Policy vs. Fiscal Policy Perspective on the OMT at the DIW/CEPR conference The ECB and its OMT Programme on 2 September 2013 in Berlin. He participated at the annual conference 2013 Competition Policy and 3

Regulation in a Global Economy of the Verein für Socialpolitik from 4 to 7 September 2013 in Düsseldorf and he also took part in a symposium European Banking Union: A New Regulatory Framework of the Verein für Socialpolitik on 16 September 2013 in Frankfurt am Main. He attended as a discussant in the conference Reform Capacity and Macroeconomic Performance in the Nordic Countries from 20 to 21 September 2013 at the Copenhagen Business School. Michael Burda also participated in the International Summer School of Economics and Management (ISSEM 2013) from 25 September to 5 October 2013 in Havana and held courses in Foundation of Labor Economics on the Universidad de La Habana. While there he also attended the International Conference in Economics and Management (ICEM 2013) from 27 to 28 September 2013. 12 September 2013 Handelsblatt - Ranking 2013 Every year, the German business newspaper Handelsblatt produces a ranking based on publications in internationally recognised economic journals. The C.A.S.E. members Wolfgang Härdle, Vladimir Spokoiny and Michael Burda managed to be ranked among the top 100 German researchers in economics on the basis of their lifetime publications. Wolfgang Härdle reached the positively Olympic heights of the top 20. Congratulations on this achievement, which once again demonstrates our deep commitment to research in economics and our ability to deliver the goods.
