Kelly Students Learn First Hand About Chicago History and Architecture Chicago is a city blessed with interesting history and world renowned architecture. They go hand in hand as students from Mr. Oswald s Chicago History class learned on their field trip in conjunction with the Chicago Architecture Foundation on October 26th. In fact, many people consider Chicago the architectural epicenter of the country. From the Home Insurance Company building designed by William Le Baron Jenny in 1885, a building considered the first skyscraper because of it steel skeletal frame, to the Sears Tower, the tallest build ing in the world for many years, Chicago architects pioneered new architectural methods, materials, and styles that arose from the need to rebuild the city after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The need to rebuild the city offered work to draftsman and architects who flocked to the city as Chicago became a clean slate for architects to practice their craft. As a result, architecture flourished in Chicago like no other city, and architecture became something that Chicago excelled at in a way that even New York could not compete. That tradition of cutting edge architecture continues today. Hallmarks of Chicago history and architecture can be found all over the city, and in virtually every neighborhood if one knows where to look, and that is exactly what students at Kelly High School are learning in their Chicago History class. Chicago History is a senior elective class that focuses on the past, present, and future of the city in a way the brings the city to life through weekly discussions focused on current events in Chicago, fields trips, and in depth projects and activities that focus on different aspects of Chicago. The class is taught by Mr. Oswald, who has been teaching for twenty years with the last twelve years spent at Kelly High School. Mr. Oswald holds a Master s degree in history from De Paul University, but Chicago History is his real passion. In 2003 he wrote a history of the Beverly/Morgan Park community where he lives that was published by Arcadia Publishing as part of their Images of America series and has done radio and television interviews about the book and the his tory of Beverly. He took over teaching the Chicago history class in 2011 and wanted to focus on ways to make learning Chicago history fun and interesting for all students. The field trips are a major aspect of the class because they bring to life many of the topics students learn about in class. The first field trip of the year is either an architectural walking tour of downtown or one of the architecture cruises on the Chicago River. Other field trips in the course have included Jane Addams Hull House, the Chicago History Museum, Colonel Robert McCormick s mansion at Cantigny, a walking tour of the Pullman neighborhood, and guided tours of Chicago Board of Trade. Mr. Oswald tries to pair up each field trip with lunch at an ethnic restaurant in a neighborhood students learn about in class, such as Little Italy, Greektown, Chinatown, etc. For many students who usually do not have the opportunity to venture out of their own neighborhoods, the field trips are a real highlight of the course. According to Mr. Oswald, the course is taught in a very student centered way, using a variety of methods and materials, which include projects, discussions, writing assignments, student presentations, and outside readings. Students read novels and selections of novels related to Chicago history, such as The Jungle, The Devil in the White City, There Are No Children Here, and many more. The course covers topics such as the glaciers from the last ice age that created the Great Lakes, the Great Chicago Fire, Chicago architecture, the Union Stockyards, the two World s Fairs that were held in Chicago, the important people in Chicago history from Marshall Field to George Pullman, labor history, neighborhood histories, and concepts such as immigration and gentrification. According to Mr. Oswald, The class basically explores the history, culture, people, and events that trans formed Chicago from a marshy swamp land on the prairies of the Midwest into a truly dynamic and world class city known for its ethnic neighborhoods, prominent architecture, world class institutions, controversial politics, and appetizing cuisine. We hear so many bad things about Chicago in the news, but Chicago is unique in so many ways, and I want to the class to focus on all the positive aspects of the Chicago and for students to come away with a new found appreciation of their city. In addition to learning about Chicago history the class also focuses on many skills students need as they leave high school and enter adulthood. Students are expected to research many topics in Chicago history and prepare presentations they will give to the class, discuss current events in the city, research and analyze Census data using Microsoft Excel, read a lot of college level material, and work on their interpersonal and communication skills through their presentations and discussion groups. The recipe seems to be working. The course started out with just a few sections being offered with a small number of students in them to Kelly High School now offering five sections of the class filled with all kinds of students, from IB and AP students to special needs students who enjoy learning about their city. One year Mr. Oswald took 100 students on the architectural river cruise, and he continues to get many younger siblings of students who already graduated who tell their younger brothers and sisters to take the class. With so much his tory around us, the students at Kelly are fortunate to be able to take such as class because many CPS high schools do not offer a Chicago History course of any kind. New Sea Creature Sculptures Arrive at Shedd Aquarium, Spill into the City Chompers the Shark lands at The Shops at North Bridge as Shedd expands Washed Ashore traveling exhibit Just like debris washing up on a beach, a new, massive sculpture made completely out of plastic marine trash has landed at The Shops at North Bridge on Michigan Ave. Chompers the Shark, comprised of chemical containers, cigarette lighters, flip flops, boogie boards, paint buckets and more, is one of the six latest sculptures to arrive in Chicago as part of Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea, a traveling exhibit hosted by Shedd Aquarium to draw attention to the issue of plastic pollution. Five additional sculptures added to the current collection at the Aquarium include Steve the Weedy Seadragon (16 feet long and 10 feet tall) a Sea Jelly Bloom (made up of 15 sculptures), SeeMore the Sea Lion Pup (7 feet long and 6 feet tall), Zorabelle the Rockhopper Penguin (6 feet tall) and Daisy the Polar Bear (10 ft tall and weighing one ton). Expanding Washed Ashore into the community provides an opportunity to engage more people beyond Shedd s walls with an artistic, powerful message that single use plastic trash is one of the deadliest predators for our lakes, rivers and oceans, said Kris Nesbitt, senior director of exhibits and experience development at Shedd Aquarium. Chompers the Shark is a giant reminder of human impact on our oceans and waterways. Our hope is that by seeing him at The Shops at North Bridge, Chicagoans and tourists alike will think twice about singleuse plastics and take simple actions like using a reusable shopping bag at a store or carrying a refillable water bottle whenever possible. The first 10 sculptures of Washed Ashore arrived at Shedd in September, making the exhibit s debut in the Great Lakes region. In April 2018, Shedd will welcome three more, bringing the grand total to 19 sculptures that will stay in Chicago until September 2018. Chompers is the first and only sculpture from the exhibit to find a home outside of the aquarium. With thousands of shoppers visiting our stores each day, especially during holiday season, we are in a unique position to amplify an important message on ways our shoppers can be more sustainable and reduce their use of single use plastic, said Erica Strama, senior marketing manager at The Shops at North Bridge. Chompers is a reminder that we can all do our part to protect the environment, and ties in well with our own sustainability initiatives here at North Bridge. Washed Ashore is a non profit community art project founded by Angela Haseltine Pozzi in 2010. The project is based in Bandon, Oregon, where Pozzi first recognized the amount of plastic washing up on the beaches she loved and decided to take action against this worldwide problem. They have now processed over 21 tons of marine debris into over 70 sculptures, engaged over 10,000 volunteers and have 4 traveling exhibits. Over the past two months, we ve been delighted to see and hear the initial reactions from Chicagoans about the exhibit and sculptures at Shedd, said Pozzi. We hope the newly arrived sculptures continue to capture the attention of visitors and inspire action to protect waterways and the aquatic animals that call them home. We are proud to partner with Shedd Aquarium during this year. The arrival at Chompers also punctuates the end of the Year of Public Art in Chicago, a city initiative designated by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE). Chompers and the other Washed Ashore sculptures are a terrific example of the collaborations happening across Chicago during the city s Year of Public Art, said Mark Kelly, DCASE Commissioner. Public art should inspire and challenge us and these sculptures lend artistic expression to an important issue. The statistics concerning plastic pollution are staggering, with some scientists predicting that by 2050, the amount of plastic in the ocean will outweigh the amount of fish pound for pound. A bit closer to home, it s estimated that 22 million pounds of plastic flow into the Great Lakes each year. The amount of plastic debris entering Lake Michigan alone each year is equivalent to 100 Olympic sized swimming pools full of plastic bottles. ***** If you always attach positive emotions to the things you want, and never attach negative emotions to the things you don t, then that which you desire most will invariably come your way.
