History of the Electra Cinema, Cheadle Electra Apartments is named after a piece of local History, the dynamic Electra Cinema. The cinema was opened in 1912 and was Cheadle s only public cinema, and for more than 50 years it brought glitz, glamour and Hollywood movie stars to local residents and many other visitors from outside Cheadle. Electra was the brain child of Esther Harriet Burns, her husband James and sister Isabelle. It is believed to have been named after the successful Electra Cinema on Portobello Rd, London. Esther and James worked very hard together to make the venture a success. The success of the business meant they were able to modernise the cinema in 1914 when they changed the frontage to a more solid brick structure with columns and decoration. The cinema operated right through the First World War showing epic films from Hollywood such as films of the wild west, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton etc. Shows would take place from Monday to Saturday. Going from strength to strength meant further expansion in 1923 where the building was expanded and individual upholstered seats installed with carpets throughout. The name was also changed to The Electra Palace to add some grandeur. The first major sound movie to be shown at Electra was The Singing Fool in Oct 1929 large crowds flocked to Electra from all over Manchester as transport links improved. Once World War 2 broke out very few films were being made and many men were away from home, so trips to the cinema were a rare treat. In 1963 the cinema finally closed it doors and the site was demolished in 1966. But for those who lived in the village in the pre-television era of the early 20th Century, the Electra was a muchloved institution that brought happiness and laughter to very many people. 4
