INVENTORY FORM CONTINUATION Community Property Address V\^\ t 7y]^\ o Kingston 94 School Street Massachusetts Historical Commission 220 Morrissey Blvd. Area(s) FormNo. Boston, Massachusetts 02125 374 ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION: The residence at 24 School Street was built c.1780 as a 3/4 cape. This 4x2 bay, wood frame, 1-1/2 story building sits on a granite block foundation. The building is clad with wood clapboards and shingles. The side gable roof is covered with wood shingles. A pair of gable dormers pierce the front roof slope. A brick chimney is located at the center ridge. The entrance contains a 4-panel wood door with "bull's eye" glass in the upper section. The surround is flat. The windows contain 12/12 sash with flat surrounds. The comerboards are thin and flat. A rear one story ell with shed roof dormers extend from the rear of the building. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE: Three properties surveyed during this project (23 School Street/INV#373; 24 School Street/INV#374; 28 School Street/INV#375) are situated around Howard's Brook. Flowage rights for a mill here were reserved by Judah Hall and others in 1750. A sawmill is mentioned in the layout of the Pembroke Road made in 1759; owned at the time by Jonathan Crooker, Job and Judah Hall and Elnathan Fish, the mill was sometimes called "Fish's Saw Mill." In fact, on early 19th century maps, this part of School Street is labeled "Fish Nb'hood." The sawmill was owned in 1843 by Jedediah Holmes and John Hall, then by John Hall and his son, John F. Hall; abandoned about 1910 (Melville 1976 p328). According to the 1820-30 map this building was originally owned by a member of the Fish family, Elnathan Fish. By 1876 Daniel F. Howland owned the property and the Howland family continued ownership through the early 20th century. BIBLIOGRAPHY: Melville, Doris Johnson. Major Bradford's Town: A History of Kingston: 1726-1976.
