Updates Fast Track Architecture MYRA School of Business launched its futuristic campus recently in Mysore. The building was inaugurated by Padmabhushan Sri Deepak Parekh, chairman, HDFC. The campus is designed by Bangalore-based Architecture Paradigm, based on Tadao Ando s philosophy of creating architectural spaces in which one can experience various emotions. The campus is set on a site of 10 acres at the heart of Mysore s corporate scene. It is a radical departure from the traditional business school architecture, and is inspired by the ensemble of gigantic boulders that dot the Bangalore- Mysore highway. The design of the campus gives scope for student s creativity and research. It has been designed to address the specific needs of management students to foster an atmosphere of openness. The unconventional design of the campus envisions the unconventional method of teaching. The campus claims to have one of its kind academic structure, has a Floating Classroom, that is situated on a pool of flowing water. The multi-storeyed library is considered as the hallmark of the structure with subscriptions to leading online resources and thousands of books that create an ideal place to study and conduct research. The ceiling of the library is directed towards the sun. There are two amphitheatres which are located at the ground and the top level. The top level amphitheatre is designed in a way which can be divided into two classrooms. The concept of the breakout classrooms has also been introduced to help the students. Towards Sustainable Design and Management Hines Today we include sustainability in the definition of a good building For over 50 years, Hines has been a global leader in project management and implementation of sustainable design. Gerald D Hines, founder and chairman of Hines, converses with Architecture+Design about the company s initiatives Your inspiration in creating a legacy of high-standard projects world wide I began my career as a mechanical engineer and I have always been interested in ways to make things work better. Early on, I started building small warehouse/office projects, but they were a lot better than others who were building at the time. Then I built a series of medium-sized office buildings designed by prominent local architects who were better known at the time for designing private homes or civic buildings. I found that we could build a superior architectural and functional product within a reasonable budget. From then on, we have always believed in building the best projects in a given market. While we cannot control the economy or fluctuations in the demand market, we know that our buildings will always have higher occupancy in leaner times. And they have tended to be better investments as well. In larger towers, we found that tenants would pay a slight premium for a better building. Today we include sustainability in the definition of a good building. Tenants are asking for greener workplaces and we are one of the firms pioneering new technologies in this area. In a list spanning more than 1200 projects, some of the well-known architects that you have worked with We have worked with a lot of talented designers. Our first association with a major firm was Skidmore, Owings and Merrill who helped us with One Shell Plaza in Houston.
