CULLINAN STUDIO Architects & Masterplanners Over five decades Cullinan Studio has gained an international reputation for designing successful and sustainable buildings, spaces and places. We work with our clients. We listen to your needs, respond creatively to your aspirations and collaborate with you to arrive at the best possible design. The result is beautiful, useful and sustainable buildings. In every project, we are committed to creating the best possible environment for the client, user and the wider community. CULTURE We have developed particular expertise in the design of visitor centres, tourism strategies, libraries and archives; creating solutions which respond to both the technical and cultural challenges these projects demand. Many of these projects respond to their sensitive historic context. We have designed five projects located in World Heritage Sites. HIGHER EDUCATION One of the greatest opportunities for universities lies in encouraging the crossing of boundaries between disciplines and working with the local (business) community. This has creative spatial consequences at a masterplanning level and in the design of both social circulation and specialist areas. To be future-proof, the buildings should be designed with change in mind. Photo SMU Above: The masterplan for Singapore Management University integrates the new campus and the city. INTERIORS We design interiors for offices and homes and enjoy fitting-out the buildings we have designed; working with furniture makers and suppliers. Having acquired detailed knowledge of the role of spaces throughout a building during the briefing process, we are in the ideal position to select and plan the layout of furnishings that will truly function to the users desires. RESEARCH Research is a vital part of our everyday practice. It enables us to push boundaries in design and technology to create more effective and efficient buildings. BIM offers huge opportunities for closer collaboration. We have developed BIMSpace - through an Innovate UK supported research project - to enable better design coordination and client engagement. RESIDENTIAL We design great homes ranging from individual houses to whole neighbourhoods: homes that are for living. The demand for efficient internal planning and generous spaces for living is important, and finding the balance between the two leads to a successful design. At high densities, good quality public realm must be combined with some private outdoor space. RETROFIT As we wrestle with the impacts of climate change, the big challenge is adaptation. We have a wide range of experience working with existing buildings and landscapes: from major restructuring to fine detail of historic buildings. Opposite: The gradual refurbishment of Rosendale Primary School in London has created a great place for children to learn - and made massive energy savings.
SCHOOLS Having worked across both the state and independent sectors, we understand that the financial challenge to create exceptional places to learn is ever more pertinent for Headteachers and Local Authorities. Our designs can reduce your school s energy consumption and create healthy environments for learning and teaching. WORKPLACE We have designed many types of workplace; for research, for making things, for studying, international headquarters, art studios, offices, and more; and we have first hand knowledge of the benefits of good workplace design having completed the retrofit of a Victorian warehouse into our own low-energy studios in 2012.
