Ironman Canada 2013 Art Museum PRESENTATIONS/DELEGATIONS A presentation was given by Keats McGonigal, Ironman Canada (World Triathlon Corporation), to provide an update on the planning process for Ironman Canada 2013. A presentation was given by Jim Moodie, Audain Foundation board member, regarding an update on the proposed art museum. MAYOR S REPORT Mayor Wilhelm-Morden acknowledged and congratulated Sue Adams, who was honoured last week for her service in the arts and business communities in Whistler and the Lower Mainland with a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in West Vancouver. Sue and her husband Bob own The Grocery Store and were honoured as business people of the year by the Chamber of Commerce in 2001. In 2009, she was honoured with the Whistler Arts Council s Business and the Arts Award. Sue is a director of the Woman s Enterprise Centre and the fundraising chair for the Whistler Health Care Foundation. She is on the provincial small business round table and the Whistler Arts Council board, and chairs the Festivals, Events and Animation Oversight Committee. In addition, she is involved with the Alliance for Cultural Tourism, and has been involved in the Chamber of Commerce and served on the board of the North Shore Credit Union, to name a few of the organizations that she has been involved with. The Jubilee recognition is a result of her involvement in the business community, mentoring small business owners, and her strong passion for developing the arts community as an economic driver for the resort. Longtime Whistler resident and former Mayor Ken Melamed also received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal during the November 20 th Regular meeting of Council. The commemorative medal was created to mark the 2012 celebrations of the 60 th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II s accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada. Sue and Ken are now two of 60,000 Canadians to be recognized during the year of celebrations. Mayor Wilhelm-Morden reported that that the first budget community engagement meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, December 6 th from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Grand Foyer of the Whistler Conference Centre. This meeting will include story board information, remarks from the Mayor,
Page 3 opportunities for questions and answers, presentations by the RMOW and Economic Partnership Initiative Committee, and round table discussions. An online tool, PlaceSpeak, will provide additional opportunities to have input into the budget process. Mayor Wilhelm-Morden encouraged everyone to attend or to provide input. Mayor Wilhelm-Morden reported that a one-day transit seat sale will be held on December 13, 2012, to celebrate the arrival of the full winter transit schedule. Ride the bus to the lifts for $1 each way, courtesy of the RMOW. Full winter transit service starts on December 13, 2012 with increased service on all routes. Mayor Wilhelm-Morden announced that earlier in the day, council appointed the following five members at large for a two year term on the Whistler Public Library Board: Gord Annand Nancy Campbell Margaret Clare Ralph Forsyth Roderick Tindall Council also appointed Councillor Duane Jackson to the board for a second term of one year. Mayor Wilhelm-Morden invited residents and visitors to celebrate the official opening of permanent ice rinks at Whistler Olympic Plaza, Thursday, December 20 th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. The family-friendly celebration will include a ribbon-cutting, remarks by the Mayor, a Whistler Skating Club performance, cake, and a chance to win passes to the Whistler Presents New Year s Eve celebration. The hours for skating at the Plaza, which is free of charge, are as follows: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday to Thursday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday to Saturday, except on holidays. Mayor Wilhelm-Morden reported that she attended a function at the Vancouver Art Gallery of the Clefs d Or, an association of concierges, which includes 3,000 members. She congratulated Daniel Havens of the Fairmont Chateau Whistler, who has just received his designation and is now one of four concierges in Whistler. At 6:00 p.m. a Public Hearing was held regarding Land Use Contract Discharge Bylaw (4921 Horstman Lane) No. 2017, 2012. Mayor Wilhelm-Morden reported that she and other members of council attended a workshop about the development of Whistler s cultural plan, and they expect to be seeing the plan in early spring. Mayor Wilhelm-Morden congratulated the Whistler Film Festival Board, and all the filmmakers, actors, directors, producers and industry partners for bringing the five days, memorable films, and festivities to the resort. She thanked the
Page 4 organizers, sponsors, volunteers and everyone else who made this festival possible. She noted that the Borsos award for best feature film was awarded to a Canadian film, Picture Day, produced by Canadian and Whistlerite Peter Harvey. This is the second largest purse for a feature film in Canada. Mayor Wilhelm-Morden also reported on the networking opportunities and the amount of business done at the festival. She met with one of the largest Chinese tour operators about opportunities to bring tours to Whistler. Mayor Wilhelm-Morden reported that the RMOW clears snow from approximately 100 kilometres of road surface in Whistler and that municipal staff have also been prepping over 25 kilometres of groomed cross-country trails. Opening dates will be announced soon. Mayor Wilhelm-Morden reported that the Garibaldi Park Management Plan is in the process of being amending. An open house is being held December 6 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Whistler Conference Centre, or the report can be reviewed on the Parks website. Submissions must be received by January 10, 2013. Mayor Wilhelm-Morden recognized that KSL Capital Partners had bought shares representing a 24 per cent interest in Whistler Blackcomb. This has resulted in some changes at the board level and at the management level. Dave Brownlie, the current President and Chief Operating Officer of Whistler Blackcomb, has been appointed as the President and CEO and a Director of the corporation. The Mayor commented that they are encouraged by this new investment, and are confident that the same positive relationship will continue with the new management group. Councillor Roger McCarthy added that the construction of the Peak to Peak gondola under the Fortress ownership of Whistler Blackcomb has done a lot for the resort, especially during the summer. He knew the principals of KSL from his other resort development work and said the new ownership was a great addition to the community and he looks forward to their plans. Councillor John Grills reported that 3,000 to 4,000 volunteers are needed for the Ironman Canada event scheduled for August 25, 2013. A volunteer meeting is scheduled for December 5 th at 7:00 p.m at the Whistler Conference Centre.
