Knowledge Truth Bible Study TV, videos, internet, libraries, books, education... so many sources of knowledge and information - but, what's really true, and what's not? Or, only half true. Do you know the Truth? The Truth about the meaning and purpose of this life and the life yet to come? And how best to get from here to there? Time permitting, comparing that to the other great world religions. One well-known astrophysicist was heard to say recently, science is true whether you believe it or not. If he were in my Pastor's class, I'd say to him, "hold on, there, friend, first let's find out what the word "science" means and then go from there." Much can be learned from science (nature) of course, especially in the field of medical science which has made great many strides in the last few years - we all respect that! However, knowledge (science) is not the same as the Truth. Science, just for starters, can't tell us WHY we're here and what the real purpose of life is, or most importantly, what happens after we die? (We're not just talking billions of years, we're talking FOREVER!) Only the Bible, God's holy, precious and inspired Word can shed light on that most personal and delicate subject. So, I'd like to invite you to a Bible Study on Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. at Holy Cross Church, 3116 S. Racine Ave., where the Truth of God's Word will be brought to light as well as enlighten... in order that you may appreciate what you already know and build on that. If you'd like to come, please call Pastor George at 773-523-3838. Also, our website is www.holycross chicago.org. Canaryville Veterans Riders Association Say Thank You! EDITORIAL IS FRIDAY AT NOON Southside OM Yoga and Wellness Family Time Yoga Class Join Team Jack to Fight Cystic Fibrosis On Dec.8, 2009 Jack Platt died just two months short of his 2nd birthday. Jack had Cystic Fibrosis, which is a life-threatening disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. In Jack's short time with us he endured so much --- he had to take over 24 enzymes a day in addition to 8 different medications. He had daily breathing treatments and was hospitalized 3 times. Jack went through so much and fought every day to live. Today - Jack would be 7 yrs. old and enjoying school, sports and playing with his sisters, Bella and Marie, students at St. Jerome School, and all of his cousins. We imagine that he would be like any other 7 yr. old little boy running and playing and living life. But unfortunately Jack is not here. There are approximately 30,000 Americans living with cystic fibrosis. They are moms, dads, sisters, brothers, daughters, sons, friends and co-workers who struggle every day just to breathe. On May 8th at 7 p.m., Southside Om Yoga and Wellness will host a Team Jack Family Yoga Class to raise money for research for a much needed cure. No yoga experience is necessary - join us for some healthy fun family bonding time. 100% of all money raised will go directly to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in honor of Jack Platt. Register today at www.southsideom.com or call Meg at 815-955-4802 we are located at 734 W. 43rd Street. Transformation doesn t have to be deep, dark, and mysterious. If you screw up, fine - laugh at yourself, learn and move on. Iyanla Vanzant Holes in Trees: Hazards or Harmless? Hazardous trees pose a danger to people and property. When storms or high winds hit, limbs - and often whole trees - fall to the ground. Many fatal accidents and millions of dollars in property damage can be averted if homeowners heed the warning signs of a hazardous tree, explains Tchukki Andersen, BCMA, CTSP* and staff arborist for the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA). By not paying attention to your trees, you are potentially placing your property, even your life, in jeopardy. Tree defect clues Fortunately, one can often read the clues that indicate a tree is prone to failure. For instance, if a tree has large branches attached with tight, V-shaped forks, you should consider having those branches removed or lightened. Other warning signs of structural instability include cracks in the trunk or major limbs, hollow and decayed areas, or the presence of extensive dead wood. Mushrooms growing from the base of the tree or under its canopy may be a sign of root decay. Remember to be thorough in your evaluation; the absence of fungus growth does not necessarily mean the tree is healthy. It also pays to be highly suspicious of any tree that has had construction activities - such as trenching, addition or removal of soil, digging or heavy equipment movement - anywhere under the spread of its branches, says Andersen. These activities can cause root death, which in turn could lead to the structural instability of the tree. The sign most people recognize is a hollow in a tree. But even a large hollow does not necessarily signify a tree has become hazardous. Nor does it mean the hollow should be filled. Filling of hollow trees, a process called cavity filling, was practiced by arborists for many years. However, thanks to recent research, it has been discovered that cavity filling is not needed to support or improve the health of hollow trees. Tree experts found that cavity filling with cement can actually damage a tree. According to Andersen, "the column of cement created in the tree by a cavity fill doesn't move, just like a column on a building, but the tree is always moving. It sways with the wind constantly. The rubbing created by the swaying tree and the solid column of cement can further damage the tree." Wood decay fungi that created the hollow in the first place may take advantage of new injuries created by the rubbing and invade the remaining healthy tissue of the tree. If cavity filling is desired for aesthetic reasons, there are new synthetic foams that can be sprayed into the cavity by professional arborists. These materials will bend with the swaying tree, reducing injury. However, there is really no reason to fill a cavity other than for aesthetic reasons; it doesn't improve the tree's health and doesn't offer extra support. If structural support of a tree is required, a professional arborist will recommend cabling, bracing, propping, tree guying or removing the tree - not cavity filling. Irish American Hall of Fame Inductees At a recent meeting the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) honored the Irish American Hall of Fame's latest class of inductees with a resolution. The Irish American Hall of Fame will introduce its inductees at an Awards Gala and dinner on April 25. Through their various contributions, each of these individuals have left an imprint on Chicago from where they came from to where they have gone, said Commissioner Frank Avila, MWRD Chairman of Finance. We congratulate the Irish American Hall of Fame on its latest class of inductees and thank them for their contributions. We are excited to celebrate the tremendous impact the Irish have had on our country and this event allows us the opportunity to tell the story of that impact, said Mike Shevlin, Co-founder of the IAHOF committee. Lipinski Issues Statement on the Passing of Cardinal Francis George Official statement from Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL-3): I am saddened to learn of the death today of Cardinal Francis George. Not just Chicago Catholics but the world has lost a man who was a great leader in the Catholic Church and a man who cared deeply about everyone no matter their faith. He overcame many personal challenges, from polio at age 13 to the cancer that took his life, but he always persevered and kept giving. From his days as a teacher to his time as Archbishop of Chicago, he gave his all to spread God s word and God s love. His outreach went beyond the Catholic community. He convened inter-religious discussions and showed tremendous respect for other faith communities and he was always extremely committed to social justice that reaches to all corners of our society. On a personal level, the more that I had the opportunity to get to know Cardinal George the more I admired him. He was an intellectual powerhouse who had a special ability to communicate great truths in a simple manner. Every time I heard him speak I learned something that enriched my mind and my faith. But his intellect was not a distant intellect of a philosopher in an abstract world, but it was wellgrounded in an understanding of the everyday life of people. And although it was sometimes misunderstood and got him in some trouble, I always admired his straightforwardness. I will never forget the time he spent with my wife Judy and me two years ago in Rome on the eve of the installation of Pope Francis. He was truly a remarkable man and a great shepherd. One week ago I had the opportunity to once again thank him for all he had done. I will continue to pray for his soul, for his family, and for all who were close to him. Services for Cardinal Francis George are as follows: Wednesday, April 22; 7 to 9:30 a.m.: Visitation (open to the Public); 10:30 a.m.: Interfaith service (open to the public); 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.: Visitation (open to the public); 7:30 p.m.: Prayer vigil for women and men religious, deacons and their wives (attendance by ticket only); 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, until 7:30 a.m. Thursday, April 23 - Visitation and all-night vigil conducted by lay ecclesial movements (open to the public). On Thursday, April 23; 7:30 a.m.: Prayer service (open to the public); 8 a.m.: Holy Name Cathedral closed for funeral Mass preparation 11 a.m.: Holy Name Cathedral doors open for funeral Mass (attendance by ticket only); 12 p.m.: Funeral Mass (attendance by ticket only).
