1.. Curriculum Vitae Peter Charles Gordon BEARD _Architect [UK] MA dip arch (cantab) RIBA www.peterbeardlandroom.co.uk Working within the fields of architecture and landscape, Peter Beard has created a unique body of work marked by its sensitivity to places as found. His work both in teaching and in design has been recognised internationally. His most recently completed project, the nature reserve on the Thames marshes at Rainham was awarded a special mention in the European Prize for Urban Public Space (2014), following a national award from the Royal Institute of British Architects for the Marshland Discovery Zone at Purfleet (2011). Recent teaching at Harvard University s Graduate School of Design (2011-14), has built on the techniques of photographic documentary first used in his research on post-industrial and post-military landscape sites during his fellowship with the National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts [UK] (2003-06). Since December 2015 he has been based in northern Italy, documenting the transitional industrial and agrarian landscapes of Val d Ossola, and working with individuals and local groups on new models of production and sustainable technologies. He received his professional qualification from Cambridge University in 1987, is registered with the Architect s Registration Board (UK), and is a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects. His degree in architecture is from the Faculty of Architecture and History of Art at Cambridge University (1979-82), graduating with First Class Honours. He spent a year studying as an exchange student at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, returning to Cambridge University for the second year of his Diploma, awarded with Distinction in 1985. As an undergraduate at Queens College Cambridge he received the Venn prize, and was a College Exhibitioner and Foundation Scholar. Following initial practice experience working on housing and listed building projects in London, he worked with Peter Salter, assisting with the realisation of the Kamiichi Pavilion (Japan - 1992). He also worked with Florian Beigel and the Architecture Research Unit at London Metropolitan University on projects in Germany, one near Leipzig (Cospuden - 1997) and another in Berlin (Lichterfelde sud - 1998). During his time as a unit master at the Architectural Association School of Architecture he entered a number of design competitions under his own name, receiving honourable mentions for his projects for the former U-boat base at Lorient, France (1999) and the Palla factory, Germany (2001). From 2004 he worked independently in practice, contributing to strategic planning initiatives in London, as well as realising a number of built projects. He was a member of the London Development Agency s Design Advisor panel (2004-11), advising on design issues related to the agency s extensive development portfolio. He also served on the Enabling Panel for the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (2005-09), advising on aspects of planning and design.

2. His work on the East London Green Grid planning strategy received the President s Award from the Landscape Institute (2008) and was a category award winner at the World Architecture Festival (2009). He has published reviews and essays in AA Files (the Architectural Association s academic journal), Blueprint and Topos magazines. His design projects have been published in AA Files, Bauwelt, Architecture Today, Building Design, the Architect s Journal, the RIBA Journal, and in Despues de - Afterwards, remaking landscapes (Editorial Gustavo Gili Barcelona 2000). His work has been exhibited at the Monolith gallery London, the Royal Academy, and the Architecture Foundation. Competition projects have been widely exhibited in the UK and internationally. He first taught at the Architectural Association in 1987, as a design tutor in first year. He was then a Unit Master in the First Year (1998-92) and the Intermediate School (1992-96), before leading a unit in the Diploma school (1996-2004), and acting as Academic Advisor to the Diploma School (2000-03). He has also taught in Cambridge University s Architecture Department: following a one year appointment as a first year design tutor (1989-90), he was invited to lead a Diploma studio at the school which ran for three years (1993-96). Other short-term teaching engagements have included the Bartlett School (London, first year design tutor 1993), the School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania (option studio workshop 1994). He has led summer schools and specialised workshops abroad including the summer school at the Universidad Catolica Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion, Paraguay as a British Council Visiting Teacher (1992), the Architectural Association Urban Landscape seminar in Yokohama, Japan (1997), the Small City design workshop held at the Kungliga Tekniska Hogskolan, Stockholm (1999), and the Third International Summer Workshop, Wurtzburg, Germany (2000). He has been a visiting studio critic at the following schools of Architecture: Cambridge University, London Metropolitan University, the University of East London, Kingston University, Bath University, the Architectural Association School of Architecture, Robert Gordon University, and the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna. His teaching projects have been published in AA Files, Architecture d Aujourdhui, and in many other catalogues and reviews. His students work has been exhibited extensively, including at the Architectural Association, the Venice Architecture Biennale and at the RIBA s Eastern Region gallery in Cambridge. Whilst teaching at the Architectural Association he served as an elected representative, firstly on the Alpha Group as an academic staff representative (1994-95), and then as staff representative on the three member Chairman s contract panel (1999). He served as an elected member of AA Council for two years (2005-07). While Academic Advisor to the Diploma School at the Architectural Association he was the school s representative to the Standing Conference of Heads of Schools of Architecture - SCHOSA. 09.02.18 via dissegna, 23-28845 Domodossola VB - ITALIA peterbeard_landroom@mac.com +44(0)7905857478 +39 032 445903
