Page 1 220 West Second Street This form was prepared as part of a research/survey/nomination project in 2011-2012 funded by a HRDP grant from the State Historical Society of Iowa for the nomination of the Downtown Historic District. The project was primarily structured to develop the nomination for the downtown, with additional research on each building documented on an Iowa Site Inventory form. The information below is taken from the table in the August 2012 draft of the nomination, with additional information documented on the property and photographs in the following sections. 7. Narrative Description The was built as the educational building for the First Methodist Episcopal Church to the east in 1977-1978. This is a two-story brick-veneer building with single pane, metal framed windows on all sides. The facade (south) of the building has a double, single paned metal frame entry in the center of the first story with two windows on either side. Five sets of these windows are found on the second story. The five bays of the facade are divided and flanked by concrete panels with arches, likely intended as a simple reflection of the architecture of the facade of the church. The west side has a side entry and two sets of windows on each story. On the east side of the building there are three windows. On the upper right hand corner of the building where the fourth window would be is where the skywalk connects leading to the main church building to the east. The north (alley) side of the building has eight windows. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance The falls within the Downtown Historic District as it is located on the same parcel as the Methodist Episcopal Church (#92-00346), which contributes to the district. Due it its later construction, the is counted as non-contributing on the church property. However, it was documented on its own Iowa Site Inventory form. The Methodist Episcopal Church, now known as the United Methodist Church, purchased this property on May 3, 1921 from a Perry Beenblossom. Sanborn maps show a house on this corner through 1943. Per the local 1978 history: The Methodists are just completing a drive to raise $375,000 to finance construction of a new educational unit west of the church; groundbreaking ceremonies took place on July 3, 1977. Norman Schoonover is chairman of the building committee; Ed Augustine and Robert Koehler are finance chairen; Russell Davidson is chairman of the board of trustees. Dr. J. Roland Carndall is pastor of the 1,300 member congregation. (Fisher 1978: 152)
