Page 4 MAMBALAM TIMES: Ashok Nagar - K.K.Nagar Edition October 9-15, 2016 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY Tamil Cinema Music 26 With his impressive voice and handsome looks and flair for singing, Subbaiah Bhagavathar made his way up fast and played lead roles on stage. Soon he was a stage star. Meanwhile he learnt classical Carnatic music, and emerged as an excellent singer. He was a major draw and his song Jaya Jaya Gokula Bala... became a rage among audiences. He sang this song as his signature tune as he entered the stage in every play, irrespective of its period, the character he was playing and the situation! Even when he played Lord Rama he entered the stage singing Jaya Jaya Gokula Bala, an anachronism because Krishna was born long after Rama. Maybe not correct according to the theory of drama of Aristotle but nobody cared! Neither the audiences nor Bhagavathar! In a play as Lord Krishna, he came on stage dressed in a silk suit with bow tie and all. Only the top hat was missing! The musical duels between Bhagavathar and Devudu Iyer led to a misunderstanding between the two artistes and, for two long years, they went their separate ways. By public demand they came together again in March, 1933 and the two, referred to as kesaris (lions!), worked in the successful mythological play Bhama Vijayam. Bhagavathar was Lord Krishna and their battle began once more with verve, sound and fury. Mikes were not yet in use in those days and actors had to sing at the top of their voices! It is interesting to note that Subbaiah Bhagavathar sent Vasan and Kalki a lawyer s notice for defaming him in Ananda Vikatan! But Vasan was unfazed. He knew that, if the actor went to court, the resultant publicity would help the circulation of his weekly! As they say in Hollywood, there is nothing called bad publicity. All publicity is good because you are being written about and not forgotten! The story of Nandanar, as immortalised by Gopalakrishna Bharathi, was filmed thrice, each time with a few Carnatic music greats. In 1935, another version of Nandanar was produced which created history at many levels. One of the immortals of Carnatic music, Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer, made his only appearance in film as the rich Brahmin landowner Vedhiyar under whom Nandan worked as his lowly ill-treated farmhand. A legend in his lifetime, the mercurial maestro of music was a bohemian and agreed to play the role, although the lead role of Nandan was to be played by a woman, K. B. Sundarambal. Indeed KBS had reservations for she was a lowborn woman while Maharajapuram was a highborn Brahmin! Such class, caste, communal distinctions and prejudices prevailed in top gear in those days. But the great musician did not care because he was above such narrow view and tunnel vision attitudes. He received a fee of three thousand rupees while KBS got an unheard of salary of one lakh rupees - a mega buck fortune indeed in 1935! The two acting in a film became news per se! Public expectation ran high and moviegoers eagerly awaited the release of the film. The film was produced by Hassandas Classical Talkies and directed by the noted Hollywood- trained filmmaker, Manik Lal Tandon. He made many Tamil films during 1930-1940s and Nandanar was one of them. His films included Bhama Vijayam (1934), a super hit in which Lord Krishna was acted by Maharajapuram R. Krishnamurthy, Viswanatha Iyer s younger brother. It was in this mythological box office bonanza that another legend of Carnatic music, a legend that still lives long after the mortal man had gone to the yonder blue, the never-never-land of no return, G. N. Balasubramaniam (immortalized under his famous initials, GNB) took his bow in cinema as the musical sage Narada. (To be continued) OBITUARY V. SEETHALAKSHMI AMMAL V. Seethalakshmi Ammal, resident of 9/1, Chakrapani Street Extn., West Mambalam passed away Oct. 3. She was 93, and had been a resident of Mambalam for more than 20 years. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Cut branches left on street margin Sir, On the request of residents, Corporation workers cut the low lying branches of trees along Nakkeran Street, West Mambalam on Oct. 4. They promised to remove the cut branches by evening the same day, but the branches are still lying on the margin of the narrow street causing hindrance to road users. We appeal to the officials concerned to make immediate arrangements to remove the cut branches from the street. Nakkeran Street residents, West Mambalam Garbage woes at Gandhi Street-Subbha Street junction Sir, Garbage is not cleared regularly from the bin at the junction of Gandhi Street and Subbha Street, West Mambalam. This leads to accumulation of garbage. With the bin overflowing for days, nearby residents and vendors are forced to dump their daily garbage around the bin thereby turning the junction into a dumping yard. It is a health hazard for passersby and nearby residents. I appeal to Corporation officials to organize daily clearance of garbage from the bin. R. Saravanan, Subbha Street, West Mambalam

CMRL to award new contract for laying underground tracks Chennai Metro Rail is planning to award fresh contracts for building the Saidapet-LIC underground stretch by the end of this month. The work on this stretch has been stalled after the Russian company Mosmetrostroy abandoned work and Metro Rail terminated the contract of Gammon-Mosmetrostroy joint venture. According to a senior official of CMRL, tenders will be opened on Oct. 19 and contracts will be awarded the same day. Metro Rail will award two contracts, one for building tunnels and underground stations between Government Estate and Thousand Lights, and the other for the work between DMS and Saidapet. The work includes building connecting tunnels between the two parallel tunnels bored between Saidapet and DMS, boring two parallel tunnels from DMS to Government Estate and completing the remaining work of constructing underground stations. The Russian firm in charge of building tunnels had completed around 90% of its work of building tunnels from Saidapet to DMS, leaving only 3 km. of tunnels from DMS to Government Estate. The firm abandoned work after Metro Rail refused its demand for payment of additional expenditure of Rs. 100 crore incurred in executing the project. As the elevated section has been completed and commissioned except for a small stretch between Alandur and St. Thomas Mount, CMRL is gearing up to open its first underground line in the city from Tirumangalam to Shenoy Nagar.
