HISTORIC EDGEWOOD INN/ MONTGOMERY COUNTY ESTATE FOR SALE HISTORY OF THE PROPERTY Originally built in 1859, the Edgewood Inn is associated with the Stabler family, a prominent and prosperous Quaker family in Eastern Montgomery County. The property is located at 16101 Oak Hill Road at the intersection of Oak Hill Road and Spencerville Road (MD Rt. 128). Originally, the land was part of a larger parcel acquired by Richard Snowden, Jr., an iron master from Anne Arundel. Caleb Stabler purchased much of the Snowden Manor Enlarged property in the early 19th century. In 1860, Caleb and Ann Stabler deeded to their son Robert 102 3/8 acres of the land. He was already living on the property in the house he built following his 1858 marriage to Hannah Taylor. The original buldings were constructed in 1858, giving this property a Historic designation. The manor had been placed in a special Protection Area and has since been re-zoned as an RE-1. The original dwelling was the 2 1/2-story block, two rooms wide with a kitchen ell. Later, probably in the late 1800 s, a new kitchen wing was added and the old kitchen was converted to a dining room. About 1903, another rear wing was built, giving the house a roughly U-shaped plan. The dwelling is set within a grove of hardwood trees from which the property obtained its name.1according to the 1976 Inventory Form for State Historic Sites Survey, the house was built in several sections on fieldstone foundations, with white clapboard exterior walls. The house faces south. A later addition on the north end is parallel to the south section and has a west facing entry. The gardens and orchards at Edgewood, according to Farquhar, were models of production and beauty as early as 1861. The dates of the current various out-buildings on the site are unknown, but one would assume that a working farmstead would have required a corncrib, an ice house, a carriage house, a kitchen and a blacksmith shop. A bank barn with a stone foundation once existed on the site but has fallen down. There are plans to rebuild it close to its original location.
