DESCRIPION Located close to the village of Cribyn in Ceredigion, Gafriw Wood is a substantial block of predominantly 2002 Sitka spruce. Access is via Gafriw Farm where a right of way exists to cross pastureland and enter the main body of the wood. From here a track runs along the south-west boundary and into the larger body of the wood. A separate footpath track runs through the northern section of the wood crossing the River Feinog. he wood sits on the southern side of the River Feinog on an attractive, and in places, steep valley edge. Within the wood springs have carved streams into the rocks and the combination of slopes and water creates a pleasant feel. A successful harvesting operation has been carried out previously as the wood is now in its second commercial rotation. owards the south-western boundary the topography flattens, here the crops may be easily inspected by way of a ride which has been cut through the understorey brash. Small areas of mixed broadleaf species are dotted about within these crops but it is predominantly Sitka spruce. he crops that have established on the steeper banks in the eastern end of the wood are of a reasonable form with some remaining elements of Monterey pine. he track through this area has recently been cleared and a ride brashed through the crop to the north and south. his allows good access to view the crops although care will be required in places. he compartments at the bottom of the valley adjacent to the river are principally birch, alder and willow and have several small watercourses cutting through them. he river itself has a significant flow and forms an attractive natural boundary to the wood. Moving north through the property into compartment 2 there is a small element of Sitka spruce and western hemlock to the east of the footpath. hese mature trees are of good form, once again the bank has provided excellent growing conditions. o the west of the footpath there is further younger Sitka spruce stocking. his appears to be of good form and had leaders of over 50cm in length. his is a challenging site but one that has previously provided a good crop of commercial softwood.
