Fall Stormwater BMP Maintenance Tips Installed a stormwater pit recently? A rain garden? Infiltration trench? Stormwater management Best Management Practices (BMPs) are designed systems such as stormwater seepage pits (dry wells), rain gardens, and infiltration trenches. These BMPs aim to reduce the impact of development on downstream waterbodies by minimizing the amount of stormwater runoff and slowing down, infiltrating, and/or filtering runoff. When a property is developed in Richland, the owner must manage stormwater as per the Township s Stormwater Management Ordinance. The installation of an on-lot stormwater BMP is required and approved by the Township for certain building projects, and the property owner is responsible for maintenance of any BMPs on their property to ensure that they continue to function properly. Homeowner Maintenance Tips for Stormwater BMPs Stormwater pits (dry wells): Clean drains regularly, especially following severe storms and in autumn when leaves are falling; clean gutters annually to keep debris out of the pit. There should be an above-ground cap that allows access to the pit. Check the cap regularly to make sure the pipes in the pit are not accumulating sediment, leaves, or other material. Rain gardens: Check vegetation regularly. Perennial plants should be cut back if needed. Dead vegetation should be removed and replaced. Bare areas need replanted. Weeding may be required. Check inflow pipes for sediment buildup; remove accumulated sediment. May require watering during periods of extended drought. Check after large rain storms to ensure the rain garden is draining within 72 hours. Infiltration trenches: Do not drive vehicles over the trench; doing so can cause compaction and/or crush the pipe. Check and clean out access pipes regularly. If each homeowner manages stormwater runoff on their property, it will help to protect streams both in the Richland community as well as in downstream communities. Everyone plays an important role in the health of our waterways!
