S a x o n s a n d S i n n e r s The excavation at Leatherhead, on the site of the former GobUn Works, is the subject of an illustrated report in the Autumn issue of The London Archaeologist. Rob Poulton, who directed the dig in 1985, describes both the early Saxon graves and the burials of the execution victims, possibly of 11th century date. S A S G r a n d R a f fl e Members are reminded that cash, counterfoils and unsold tickets for this raffle should be returned to Castle Arch, Guildford GUI 3SX, by Tuesday, 15th December. This is the date on which the draw will be made. Profits from the raffle are in aid of the Guildford Museum's new archaeological gallery in which many of our Society's excavation finds will be displayed. FIELDWALKING T H R E E M E D I E V A L S I T E S D I S C O V E R E D N E A R G U I L D F O R D 1. Pond Hill, Flexford: in Wanborough parish (a) SU 946496. A field scatter of roof tile fragments and 13/14th century pot sherds, almost all of which were coarse whiteware, found on the crest of a hill overlooking a stream that flows to the NW. The site lies on London Clay, with a surface drift of chalk-derived flints, but immediately west of the sherd scatter is a patch of gravel.

(b) SU 946495. A scatter of 13/14th century whiteware, some tile fragments, and some irregular blocks of Bargate stone, from an area of black soil on the flank of the hill, about 80m SE of site (a). London Clay at both sites is slightly more sandy than it is further north in the area, and Reading Beds outcrops some 200m south from site (b). Occasional olive green pebbles that were found probably come from the Basement bed of the London Clay. 2. Follyhatch, West Wyke: in Normandy parish SU 914508. A field scatter of roof tile fragments and 13/14th century pot sherds, almost all of which were of coarse whiteware, found immediately north of the first of a flight of six earthen dams along the course of a W-E flowing stream through Catherine Frith. The site is on London Clay, with a hill of Bagshot Sands approx. 200m further to the north. Post-medieval brick and tile production in the area may be the reason for a large area of calcined flints centred on 912510 and a large mound with brick debris at the northern end of a hollow-way at 911512. 3, Crockery Lane: in East Clandon parish (a) TQ 063524. Excavations by machine to create a pond in a rectangular embanked coppice revealed large quantities of medieval and postmedieval tile and brick that may have been produced on the site. Immediately adjacent to Crockery Lane a rammed chalk floor was briefly exposed and in the vicinity a few sherds of medieval coarse whiteware were found. (b) TQ 063526. A scatter of 13/14th century pot sherds were found near Crockery Lane on arable that has recently been taken from woodland. Stone blocks of Lower Greensand, Bargate and Chalk, as well as medieval tile fragments were concentrated immediately adjacent to the lane within the scatter, and about 50m to the east on the hill slope is a large hollow that was probably a clay pit and may also be of medieval origin. Three ware-types of pottery were recovered, the majority being of coarse sandy whiteware, a lesser quantity of grey/brown sandy ware, and less still though by no means uncommon, coarse shelly ware. Both sites lie on London Clay, but Reading Beds outcrops some 100m south from (a) within East Clandon Park. All of the above sites were found during fieldwalking which had as one of its aims, the discovery of whiteware kilns sites. Although all of them may have been pottery manufactories, no kiln wasters were found even in Crockery Lane, although at that site some fragments of very sandy 'tiles' could be from kiln bars. Whether or not (3b) represents a domestic or a domestic/industrial site remains unclear, but it is almost certain that much of the pottery found was made by a family of potters that are recorded in the Cartularies of Chertsey Abbey. Crockery Lane may refer to pottery found there but more likely remembers the family name of William, Richard and Nicholas Crockere, who lived on the East Clandon estate during the first half of the 14th century. All the sites are regularly visited in order to retrieve larger samples with which to assess their importance. Only trial excavations could prove whether they were domestic or industrial sites, but this is not contem plated at present. It is intended that a short note on the pottery found at Crockery Lane and on the Crockere family will appear in the Collections. Phil Tnnp<;

Friends Burial Ground, Charlwood (TQ 238408) Registers at Friends House, Euston Road, London, show that at least 111 persons were buried at Charlwood between 1661 and 1807, many of them Tom Ifield, Sussex. The Burial Ground has long been a field for grazing; few people in Charlwood can tell where it is, and in a few decades probably no one will remember it. No maps mark it, nor is there a map at Friends House. In the field are two small brown stones, about four inches square, marked with the letters F.B.G. In order that its location should not be forgotten (especially with regard to possible building development) the position has been marked on 6 inch O.S. maps and copies lodged with the Surrey Archaeological Society, the County Record Office, Mole Valley Council Planning Office and Friends House, London. The field belonged to Tanyard Farm, whose owner, Edward Taylor, willed the farm to The Friends about 1700. The field is situated at the corner of Russ Hill Road and Ringers Lane. It no longer belongs to The Friends. Jean Shelley NONSUCH =j Nonsuch Celebrations 1988 j 1 450 FESTIVAL SYMPOSIUM Saturday, 11th June, 1988 As part of the celebrations, the Nonsuch Antiquarian Society in associa tion with the Surrey Archaeological Society, is arranging a one-day symposium in Bourne Hall, Ewell.
