ANTHONY TAPPÉ, FAIA PRINCIPAL EMERITUS Dear Members of the Library Building Expansion Committee: We are pleased to submit our qualifications for the renovation and expansion of Booth & Dimock Memorial Library. Our enthusiasm for this project stems from our extensive background performing similar services for historic libraries throughout New England. We know the value that communities place on these buildings and we know the value that a public library has for a community. Our library planning experience, expanding and renovating community libraries similar in size and character to yours, has yielded us a national reputation, and we are well positioned to apply our public library planning and design skills to the Booth & Dimock Memorial Library. At Tappé Architects, we are committed to excellence in library design. As our Director of Library Design, I have been pursuing library design with our firm for 3 decades and teach library planning and design to architects and library personnel from across the country, sharing the expertise we have developed from our experience. I have been Chair of the Architecture for Public Libraries Committee of the American Library Association and served on the committee for 10 years preparing presentations on emerging library planning issues for national audiences. Additionally, we have been invited speakers on Sympathetic Additions to Significant Historic Buildings at the annual national Traditional Buildings conference a dozen times. As you review our materials, please note the following strengths that we bring to your project: Extensive Public Building Experience We have completed numerous publicly funded projects in New England, and understand the public building construction and renovation process. Unique Library Planning Expertise Our firm is nationally recognized for our up to date understanding of trends and requirements in library design, we teach and lecture on these topics on an ongoing basis. Extensive Experience in Renovations & Additions A review of our portfolio will indicate our depth of experience in expanding, and adapting existing libraries to modern standards. booth & dimock memorial library firm profile FIRM PROFILE Tappé Architects is an award-winning full service architectural firm of 20 design professionals. Our firm is large enough to take on complex projects and aggressive schedules but small enough to give careful personal attention to each of our projects. Tappé Architects, Inc. was founded in 1979, continuing the practice of Huygens and Tappé, founded in 1962. In 2000 Tappé Architects transitioned to new ownership and leadership. The current firms principals are Jeffrey Hoover, Charles Hay and Cesar Dedios. jeffrey hoover, aia We are enthusiastic, energetic and focused on the success of each of our projects. As the diversity of the firm s work indicates, we are comfortable working on a variety of architectural challenges and we are committed to providing the absolute highest level of service. Central to our design mission is a commitment to quality. We recognize that quality is the result of how completely considered and thoroughly executed each of our projects is. We are proud of the recent design awards that our firm has received and believe it reflects positively on our efforts to achieve design excellence on all of our projects. cesar dedios, aia charles hay, aia ATHOL PUBLIC LIBRARY, ATHOL, MA 2014 LEED Platinum Historic Carnegie Library Only LEED Platinum Distiguished Historic Library in US, 2014 THE PEQUOT LIBRARY, SOUTHPORT, CT Connecticut Preservation Awards, CT - Trust for Historic Preservation, 2007 Award of Merit Historic Restoration ACTON MEMORIAL LIBRARY, ACTON, MA National Commerical Builders Council Merit Award, 2000 NAHB 2001 Award of Excellence KILTON LIBRARY, WEST LEBANON, NH Library Journal, New Landmark Libraries - Honorable Mention WORCESTER PUBLIC LIBRARY, WORCESTER, MA AIA Western Massachusetts Chapter Design Award, 2002 Worcester Design Award, 2002 Silver Hammer Award, 2002 OSWEGO LIBRARY, OSWEGO, NY 2008 Build New York Award: Excellence in Design 2010 PLNY: Excellence in Historic Preservation The firm maintains $2M in liability insurance coverage as well as all customary insurance policies. booth & dimock memorial library firm profile MANAGEMENT APPROACH & COST CONTROL Tappe s overall management approach is to assign senior staff members to the project in order to take advantage of the firms experience in the earliest phases of the project. We will assign Jeffrey Hoover as Principal-in-Charge. Working with Jeff will be Chris Blessen to manage the project, coordinate with consultants and resolve technical issues. Jeff will be client contact, attending building committee meetings and public presentations. We will use senior staff to engage in the library planning process and programming design, including Damian Liddiard, Tappe s Design Director. Our senior team will provide continuity throughout the project. This team has collaborated together on school projects for over 19 years. Our recent change order history reflects an average of less than 1% of overall construction cost. All recent schematic design cost estimates have been within 3% of bid price. PROJECT SCHEDULING In recent years our firm has limited our project applications. This selective approach is the result of our view that we should only apply for projects where we believe that we are an appropriate fit and have the specific and unique skills and experience required to be highly successful. Our recent projects have all been delivered on time. We have consistently met our obligations to deliver milestone submissions along with bid documents in a timely manner. Our commitment to construction administration has resulted in the timely processing of submittals and shop drawings resulting in no impact on construction schedules. We are proud that our contract documents are thorough and that our in-house quality control has resulted in limited construction change orders as noted above. TAPPÉ ARCHITECTS, INC. POINT OF CONTACT TELEPHONE NUMBER City of Keene, NH Keene, NH (603) 352-0157 2 Overview: Tappe Architects was brought in 2000 to complete a comprehensive renovation and expansion of the existing historical library, and was hired again in 2014 to further connect the expanded library into an adjacent building including further comprehensive interior and exterior renovations to the annex. Housed in an 1899 historic Victorian building, the Keene Public Library was in need of a long-term solution for expansion, renovation and code conformity. Tappé Associates, Inc. s design solution required demolishing the older additions and expanding the library with a new, 20,000 SF two-story addition that complements the original Victorian building. During the renovation, a dramatic vaulted ceiling was discovered and is now a showcase for that portion of the library. In addition, an existing interior glazed ceiling, which had been hidden and forgotten during a previous renovation, was uncovered and exterior skylights were installed to compliment the feature. Project Size: 12,000 SF (Historic restoration - original 1899 building) 20,000 SF (Planned addition - Currently in Study Phase) Construction Cost: $3,291,000 (2000 Renovation/Expansion) $0,000,000 (2014 Addition - In progress) 25. In order to restore the interior, a number of ornate details were recreated including antique book stacks and hand carved fi replace surrounds that had been destroyed and were rebuilt using photographs taken four decades earlier. Not only did this project include a careful exterior and interior restoration, it also included designing custom furniture to match historic furniture known to be in the original building when it opened. Planning is ongoing for a future addition to expand the overall capacity of the library. POINT OF CONTACT TELEPHONE NUMBER Beverly, MA Kathleen Ingalls (978) 921-6066 4 Overview: The original 1916 Beverly Farms Branch of the Beverly Public Library was heralded as a gem in one of the fi rst issues of the Architectural Record. Unfortunately, the building had most of the beautiful ornament stripped from the exterior in the 1950 s and the original electrical wiring and heating systems needed replacement. Tappé Associates, Inc. completed a feasibility study to renovate and expand the edifi ce of the library. This Historic Preservation project resulted in the recreation of all of the original Terra Cotta ornament on the exterior of the library. The interior of the library is furnished with updated technology for more effi cient library service. While updating and preserving the character of the building, a 6,000 sf addition was built to the rear, reinterpreting the design of the historic building and expanding services threefold. This was accomplished without the addition of staff to the Town s budget. By strategically placing the circulation desk in the link between the new addition and the original library, the librarian has clear site lines into the Children s library and below via the atrium as well as the Adult Main reading area.
