CHECK ONE CHECK ONE EXCELLENT XGOOD _FA1R DETERIORATED RUINS _UNEXPOSED UNALTERED -^ALTERED X.ORIGINALSITE MOVED DATE. The Andrews House, constructed ca. 1860, was built as a residence for one of the first settlers of LeSueur County, David Kendall. Built by Kendall and local carpenters, it is a simple L-shaped house. The house is comprised of a "main house" of two stories with a series of one story sheds and a lean-to attached to the north and west sides. The "main house" is five bays wide on the first story of the main facade and two bays on the second story of the same facade. It is a frame building with white clapboard siding. The limestone foundation is painted red. A full front porch is supported by turned posts with elaborate brackets. The rough cedar shake roof is gabled with projecting verges and cornice. Many of the original 6 over 6 windows have been replaced with one or two paned windows. Plain wooden trim surrounds the windows on the sheds and lean-to addition. The windows on the "main house" are surrounded by triangular trim. The main door is located on the corner of the "main house." The main entry was originally located in the center of the front facade with 6 over 6 windows flanking both sides. An additional door on the front facade is located in the shed or kitchen addition. The original floor plan of the interior is difficult to discern due to multiple remodelings. According to a direct descendant of the Andrews family the first floor contained two parlors, a kitchen and a rear bedroom. The second floor contained a dormitory styled bedroom.

In 1874 the Reverend John R. Andrews purchased this house and a quarter section of land. Andrews was a circuit riding Methodist minister who left Illinois and settled near this house in 1856. In 1875 the "Andrews Family Concert and Dramatic Troupe" was formed in this house. A year later they styled themselves the "Andrews Family Swiss Bell Ringers," but by 1884 they were the "Andrews Opera Company." The Andrews Opera Company performed in opera houses, town halls, theaters, and schools from coast to coast during the last quarter of the nineteenth century, (offshoots of the company, under different managements, continued for another decade.) In the 1880s the company became nationally known and for many years toured the country in a private railroad car. In 1891 the company numbered sixty players. "The Andrews troupe was unique in several ways. First, it was a family organization, and its nucleus always consisted of the Andrews brothers and sisters, their wives, husbands, and even children. Second, it sprang fullfledged from a frontier environment it was not imported from the East or from Europe. Third, it pioneered in producing grand opera in English, and its performances were so moderately priced that the average man could afford to hear them. Troupes like that organized by the Andrews made a significant contribution to the cultural and social history of the frontier West."-*- A direct descendant of the Andrews family has preserved the opera company's memiors and scrapbooks. 1 Dubois, Cornelia Andrews, "Operatic Pioneers -- the Story of the Andrews Family," Minnesota History, March, 1953, p. 317.
