OBEC Award of Distinction - Materials OBEC Award of Distinction - Materials identifies an individual or a company that has introduced a product or building system that has substantially improved the design, construction, or performance of the building envelope. Award of Distinction - Materials presented to DuPont Tyvek DuPont has introduced many innovative products to the construction industry, including Corian and SentryGlas but the product most familiar to builders is Tyvek. Invented in the 1950 s Tyvek is the DuPont brand for a family of strong, flash-spun, non-woven materials made of high-density olefin fibre. By varying the production process, different properties and characteristics can be engineered into the material. In 1965 DuPont introduced a type of Tyvek that could be used as a membrane to replace building paper and invented a new word for it: housewrap. In the process, a new category of building products emerged and changed the way homes are built. The product has evolved over the years but today s Tyvek HomeWrap serves the same function as a barrier to air and water that remains breathable so that water vapour can pass through it and out of the wall cavity, saving energy and maintaining the health of the building envelope.

OBEC Award of Distinction - Design OBEC Award of Distinction - Design recognizes a project team that has achieved excellence for either a new or retrofit design to a significant component of the building envelope. Award of Distinction - Design presented to Loblaw Companies Limited Headquarters Sweeny Sterling Finlayson & Co Architects Inc. The fundamental design goal for the Loblaw Companies headquarters building was the creation of a facility focused on strengthening a sense of community and supporting human comfort. The solution is a four storey building with large open floor plates surrounding a central atrium that contains the common lunch area; the symbolic and real gathering place of the building. Natural daylighting provides energy savings and a more comfortable work environment achieved through a perfectly aligned solar orientation, floor to ceiling glazing, exterior sunshading for glare control and interior automated light shelves that direct sunlight deep into the building. Operable windows support natural ventilation and provide the opportunity for personal control of the workspace. The result is an advanced office which is a measurably better environment for its occupants.

Anthony A. Woods Award of Excellence (Beckie). The OBEC President's Award of Excellence has been renamed the Anthony A. Woods Award of Excellence (Beckie). In May 2009, Tony Woods passed away. In recognition of his many years of tireless service to the discipline of building science and to the Ontario Building Envelope Council we are thrilled to rename this award in his honour. The 2010 Anthony A. Woods Award of Excellence(Beckie) presented to Stephen Carpenter
