Page 4 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Rangan Street residents suffer from noise pollution Sir, Residents of Rangan Street, T. Nagar are harried by the heavy din from the ongoing construction work in a popular jewellery showroom for the past two years. The tranquility has been disrupted by the blaring sound of tile cutters, concrete breakers and drills used in the renovation of the showroom. There are a number of senior citizens living on the street. The windows are always kept shut to reduce the effect of the ear shattering noise. The nightmare starts early in the morning and reduces only late in the evening. My neighbor s wife suffering from Parkinson s disease finds it very difficult to tolerate the noise and her condition is worsening. The Residents Welfare Association has lodged several complaints with the authorities concerned but no action is being taken. I have also approached the Tamilnadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB), which directed my complaint to the corporation, which further referred it to the zonal office from where I haven t received a reply. Appeal to ply more white board buses Sir, MTC has drastically reduced the number of white board buses that have the lowest minimum fare of Rs. 3 in the city. Instead, mostly express and deluxe buses are only plying and have minimum fares of Rs. 5 and is Rs. 7 respectively. It is affecting the commuters from the lower income strata who are heavily dependent on MTC buses for their daily transport needs. To cite an example, my servant maid has to shell out Rs. 360 per month to commute to work for the short distance from Ashok Pillar to Sivan Park, K. K. Nagar. By reducing the frequency and the number of white board buses, MTC has indirectly increased fares affecting the livelihood of many. Unused police assistance booth an eyesore Sir, The police assistance booth in Mambalam Railway Station Road, West Mambalam, close to the station is ill-maintained and looks abandoned. The words Police and Assist in the sticker stuck on the booth have faded and are no longer legible. The sticker instead reads as Chennai City Stance and I wonder if the police department has taken a stance to let the booth remain as it is. The booth is littered with garbage and is also damaged. Nagar Sir, This is to voice my concern about the bad condition of 71st Street, 11th Sector, K. K. Nagar. The road has remained in a bad condition for over 3 years and no steps have been taken by the Corporation to relay it in spite of several reminders. The other roads in the area have been re-laid, especially after last year s floods and are in good condition. This road is more popular with motorists to avoid the traffic in Ponnambalam Salai. Residents of the street are also badly affected as it has become a dust bowl. I appeal to Corporation officials to mill and relay 71 st Street at the earliest for the benefit of all. R.
