Page 2-LAWNDALE Bilingual News -Sunday, July 12, 2015 Ladies: How Money Wise Are You? Online Dating for Latinos Made Easy Zoosk, the leading online dating company and #1 grossing dating app, has partnered with Siempre Mujer magazine to launch a series of online videos targeting Hispanic consumers. The videos will feature Cristy Marrero, Zoosk s spokesperson and Group Content Chief at Meredith Hispanic Media, where she ll provide the audience with dating tips and advice on how to successfully find a partner through online dating. When it comes to dating, Hispanic consumers have the same needs as any demographic; they are looking for meaningful and compatible relationships. However, there are cultural differences that need to be taken into consideration when approaching the dating experience for Hispanics, said David Pedersen, Senior Communications Manager at Zoosk. We are confident these videos will offer viewers insight into online dating coming from a credible source who has had a positive experience finding love online. I truly believe online dating is the most effective way of meeting a potential partner, said Cristy Marrero, Zoosk s spokesperson and Group Content Chief at Meredith Hispanic Media. Not only because it worked for me but we spend so many hours every month on our cell phones that the least it can do is help us find a partner! In the online videos we created with Zoosk, we show you how to do it. For more information please visit www.zoosk.com. Hernandez, Latino Caucus Recognized for Immigrant Advocacy Work State Rep. Elizabeth Lisa Hernandez, D-Cicero, and members of the Latino Legislative Caucus were presented with the Immigrant Champion Award by the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) on Tuesday. On behalf of the entire Latino caucus, it is an honor to accept this prestigious award in recognition of our work to craft legislative policy that helps foster a more immigrant-friendly Illinois, Hernandez said. During a time when our state faces numerous financial hardships, it is important that the voice of the Latino community resonates strongly throughout the Legislature, as we work to protect funding for critical programs that serve immigrant families throughout the state. It s a perplexing situation. Women control half of the wealth in the United States, yet studies have shown that many of them are convinced they are lacking when it comes to understanding finances. Too often, in their eyes they aren t capable of making prudent investment decisions. But that s simply not true, says Cynthia Fick, author of the book The Sisterhood of Money: The Art of Creating Wealth from Your Heart (www. thesisterhoodofmoney. com). As part of the effort to get to that point, Fick says women should take stock of where they are, in terms of finances and confidence, so they know how to move forward. She offers these tips: Uncover your money beliefs. Your attitude about money is important because what you believe determines where you are going, Fick says. For example, if you don t think you can retire early, you are probably making choices right now that support that belief, she says. Too often, women s negative views about their financial knowledge dictate their fortunes, and perception becomes reality. By exploring their views about money, women can challenge some of their limiting beliefs, become more confident and take control of the situation, Fick says. Clarify your financial-life vision. What are your goals and your dreams? One of the first steps to achieving your goals is to make sure they are clearly defined. What is it you truly want for yourself and how do you want your life to look? Fick asks. When you get clear about what is most important to you in your financial life, you create a very good template to make decisions about potential opportunities, your money and your life. Figuring out what you want is a very important part of creating wealth from your heart. Capture your financial snapshot. It s surprising just how many women (and men, too, for that matter) only have a vague notion about how they are spending their money. You need to write down just how much you spend each month for such expenses as your mortgage, car payments, electricity, cable TV, groceries and whatever other expenses you may have. Then you need to figure out your total monthly income and compare that to the expenses so you can see how much, if any, money you have left over to save, invest or use to pay down debt. Gathering this information gives you a picture of your current financial reality, Fick says. That s an essential step to take if any adjustments need to be made.

LAWNDALE Bilingual News -Sunday July 12, 2015-Page 3 MassMutual Research: Survey shows concerning knowledge deficiency about Social Security retirement benefits amongst Hispanics Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) announced the results of a survey aimed to understand how much U.S. Hispanics know about Social Security retirement benefits. The Thomas J. Pavlik Earns Designation of Master Municipal Clerk (MMC) Thomas J. Pavlik, MMC of City of Berwyn, has earned the designation of Master Municipal Clerk (MMC), which is awarded by the International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC), Inc. IIMC grants the MMC designation only to those municipal clerks who complete demanding education requirements; and who have a record of significant contributions to their local government, their community and state. The International Institute of Municipal Clerks, founded in 1947, has 10,300 members throughout the United States, Canada and 15 other countries, and the mission of this global non-profit corporation is to enhance the education opportunities and professional development of its diverse membership. In light of the speed and drastic nature of change these days, lifelong learning is not only desirable, it is necessary for all in local government to keep pace with growing demands and changing needs of the citizens we serve. Your City can take immense pride in Thomas s educational accomplishments and achievement of this milestone. On behalf of the IIMC Board of Directors, I am honored to endorse the conferring of MMC to Thomas J. Pavlik, MMC of City of Berwyn. We share your pride in this achievement and we applaud your support of the role Thomas plays in your city. results of the survey, which included a true/false quiz about Social Security facts, are concerning: Fortyseven percent of Hispanic respondents answered more than half of the basic questions about Social Security retirement benefits incorrectly. Also troubling is that only 11 percent consider themselves to be very knowledgeable about Social Security retirement benefits. While many Hispanic respondents understand basic facts about Social Security retirement benefits, the findings show larger gaps in knowledge of eligibility requirements: Citizenship is not a requirement 1 : Over three-quarters of Hispanic respondents (77 percent) think that being an American citizen is necessary to receive Social Security retirement benefits, which is incorrect. Retirement age is a mystery 2 : Nearly four in five Hispanic respondents (79 percent) incorrectly believe full Social Security retirement age is 65, when it actually varies depending on birth year. Social Security retirement benefits are only paid while you are alive 3 : More than half (53 percent) of Hispanic respondents incorrectly believe that if their spouse passes away, they will continue to receive both their own benefit as well as their deceased spouse s benefit. In reality, assuming qualification criteria is met they would receive the greater of their own benefit MHOA Awards Leaders On behalf of the McDonald s Hispanic Owner Operator s association (MHOA) and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana (RMHC-CNI) we cordially invite you to the 2015 HACER Scholarship Recipients Dinner. The MHOA believes that education is the way to success and once again has awarded five bright individuals with the HACER Scholarships. The 2015 HACER Recipients Dinner will recognize the deserving Hispanic students and present them with an HACER scholarship awarded by the MHOA and RMHC- CNI. On behalf of the MHOA and RMHC-CNI, we hope you will be or their spouse s benefit, but not both. Still, Hispanics remain optimistic about the future of Social Security. Seven out of ten Hispanic respondents (71 percent) believe Social Security will be available to them when they retire, compared to 63 percent of the general population. But, only half (52 percent) think the program will have sufficient funding when they retire. This may explain why just one-fourth expect to rely more heavily on Social Security than their personal savings or other sources of retirement income, with six percent expecting to rely on Social Security alone. able to attend, meet the recipients and experience first-hand the impact these scholarships make to our Hispanic students, their families and our community. Please RSVP to Rosa Luna at rluna@ hernandezgarcia.com or 847-676-4445 x.230. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Page 4-LAWNDALE Bilingual News -Sunday July 12, 2015 Northeastern Illinois Transit Community Marks 25 th Anniversary of ADA Passage The Regional Transportation Authority (RTA), Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Metra and Pace join the more than 56 million Americans with disabilities in celebrating the 25 th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The law, signed by President George H.W. Bush on July 26, 1990, ensures the civil rights of people with disabilities. The legislation established a clear and comprehensive national mandate for the elimination of discrimination against individuals with disabilities and has expanded opportunities for people with disabilities including the provision of accessible public transportation services that help to eliminate barriers and enable full participation in community life. Additionally, the RTA is serving as a Gold Sponsor of this year s 12 th Annual Disability Pride Parade on Saturday, July 18 in downtown Chicago. The march begins at 401 South Plymouth Court and ends at Daley Plaza. After the parade, RTA, Pace, CTA and Metra staff will be on hand at Daley Plaza to provide information about the region s accessible public transportation programs. Participants will also be able to practice boarding a CTA bus using the ramp and securement areas. Learn more about the festivities by visiting www. disabilityprideparade. org and more about the services RTA provides to riders with disabilities at http://www.rtachicago. com/rider-resources. Decatur Takes the Lead in DUI Arrests DUI arrests and other law enforcement efforts are the most significant deterrents to impaired driving. The Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists (AAIM) is pleased to release the results of their Annual Illinois DUI Arrest Suvey for 2014. AAIM has conducted this survey, which is funded by a grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation, for 25 years. We maintain an aggressive and intolerant position on impaired driving. Earning the number one spot in Illinois for 2014 validates our commitment to remove drunk drivers from our roadways. We must continue to partner with organizations such as AAIM, local businesses, government officials and schools to solve this problem, states Decatur Police Chief Brad Sweeney. In 2014, Springfield was second with 406 arrests, followed by Naperville (387), Rockford (384), Carol Stream (352), Elmhurst (285), Chicago Heights (283), Normal (267), Bloomington (261), and Cicero (255). Tougher enforcement of drunk driving laws and public awareness campaigns in Illinois has substantially cut the annual number of alcoholrelated traffic deaths since fatalities peaked during the 1980 s, said Rita Kreslin, Executive Director of AAIM. Focused efforts and cooperation of law enforcement agencies, traffic safety advocates and communities have helped to prevent crashes and save thousands of lives. The biggest increase in arrests among the top departments was in Berwyn where DUI arrests jumped by 122% in 2014 compared to 2013. Other municipalities with increases from 2013 to 2014 are Chicago Heights (14.6%), Bloomington (6.1%), Cicero (5.4%) and Arlington Heights (4.2%) A detailed listing of survey results and participating departments is available at: www.aaim1.org.
