Brad s got no Second Year Blues By Daniel Paproth Brad Mangan s football career so far has certainly been an interesting one. The 20-year-old, now settling into his second season at Werribee, is originally from Kyabram, and was one the Murray Bushrangers consistent performers in his time there. He played in their 2008 premiership when they defeated the Dandenong Stingrays by 78 points alongside the likes of Steele Sidebottom, Jack Ziebell and Tom Rockliff, and won the side s most improved player award that year. Being 17 in that year he played again for the Bushrangers in 2009, and was then approached by Werribee at the end of the season about playing for the Tigers, an opportunity too good to pass up. It was hard at first, coming from a town with 7,000-odd population, he said. Now I m playing in front of a town with a massive population, so it was certainly a bit different. But now I m in my second year and I just love it. I get along well with the all the boys (he and fellow country recruits Farran Priest, Will Martiniello and Nathan Laracy all share a house in Tarneit) and it s a great environment. He described his first season at Werribee as a bit disappointing. I only played two senior games last year, and had a limited pre-season because I d been injured, he said. But this year I have worked hard on my fitness and worked hard during pre season and I ve been playing more in the seniors. But I m still not near the best footy I can play for Werribee yet. It s becoming a more positive outlook for Mangan each week having played 8 games this season. He battled tendonitis soon after joining the club and had his jaw broken late last season, which saw him sit out the reserves finals campaign. Werribee currently sit seventh on the ladder, with a five & five record and Mangan says that consistency over four quarters of football is the main goal the young Tigers are trying to achieve each week. Our goal is obviously to make the finals, hopefully the top four and then give that a real shake, he said. We have to get that consistency, because when we re on, we re one of the best two or three sides in the competition, as the game against the Northern Bullants showed. His own goals are exactly in line with the team s, reflecting the unity down at Avalon Airport Oval For me, I probably just have to be consistent over four quarters of football.
The Community Report Tigers in the Community Werribee Senior Coach Paul Satterley began his coaching career at local level with Hoppers Crossing in the WRFL so he understands the challenges that coaches at that level face. Tigers Fitness Manager Doug Brown with local coaches. Paul invited a group of coaches from Wyndham clubs to attend the President s Lunch and also to be in the inner sanctum of the rooms as the players and coaches prepared for the game against Geelong. This is part of the clubs commitment to helping grass roots football and creating a working relationship with clubs in the local area. Paul Satterley at Hoppers Crossing Football Club. Werribee players have helped junior teams with coaching and sharing their football knowledge. This is an invaluable insight into what it takes to step up to the next level of football both mentally and physically.
