The house is arranged around a recreational pool and is situated to take advantage of sun exposure and views to the the surrounding orchard and forest edge. The house provides intimate daily living surrounding the central open kitchen, while generous space for gathering and entertaining is allocated in nearby flexible open areas. The house is designed to encourage free movement through high and long open spaces and shelter or rest in other, more intimately scaled locations. 5

These splayed wings address and embrace the orchard landscape and follow the line of the forest. The gently sloping site causes a sectional shift in the massing. The main floor of the house is continuous throughout, with the bedroom wing rising a storey higher and the living wing extending a storey lower. Heavy timber exposed posts and beams frame the generous clear wood window and door assemblies. Custom steel brackets within the roof structure allow for generous roof overhangs. The roofs reduce rain exposure, control solar gain, minimize potential leakage and reduce maintenance. The fir clad ceilings and soffits create a continuous plane at the underside of the roof, blurring the line between interior and exterior.
Energy requirements for the 7, square foot home have been lowered through various measures. A geothermal system provides heating for the house and pool. Energy use is reduced by the installation of Low-E glazing,in-floor heating and heat recovery. An airtight heat efficient woodburning stove with limited emissions provides auxiliary heat and coziness. The house also incorporates a sewage treatment facility, rain water storage, a storm water drainage field and a horizontal geothermal field.
