TRANSACTIONS OF THE HISTORIC SOCIETY OF LANCASHIRE AND CHESHIRE FOR THE YEAR 1961 VOLUME 113 LIVERPOOL PRINTED FOR THE SOCIETY 1962

Made'jmd Printed in Great Britain by C. Tinling & Co., Ltd., Liverpool, London and Prescot*

EDITORIAL NOTE It is an encouraging indication of the wide variety of interests of those who submit papers for publication that in this volume the contributors cover, among other subjects, agricultural, military, commercial, industrial and political history, ranging over many different periods. Mr. Youd's paper on "The Common Fields of Lancashire" has already given rise to the serious discussion which such pioneering work ought to arouse; it is hoped to provide opportunity for such discussion later in the pages of the TRANSACTIONS, and that students of this branch of history will now give as much attention to Lancashire as has been devoted to Cheshire during the past two decades. Students of the history of events nearer to our own day may be glad to note that for the first time we now publish a paper on an aspect of twentieth-century history. Unfortunately, the passage of time which provides us with the material for our studies also takes from us our friends and colleagues. During the past year three of the most distinguished members of the Society have died, one of whom, our President, had been a member since 1890. Obituaries are published in this volume. In response to the request of a number of members the recently revised Laws of the Society have also been printed. The Council wishes to express its gratitude to Mrs. Mary Brigg, Mr. R. N. Dore, Mr. M. M. Schofield and Mrs. G. Youd for contributions towards the cost of publishing their papers, and to Mr. A. J. Bagley for preparing the index. 30 August 1962. J. J. BAGLEY The University, JAMES MURPHY Liverpool. Honorary Editors. The Council wishes it to be known that authors alone are responsible for the opinions and statements in their several papers. Contributors to these TRANSACTIONS are advised to write to one of the Honorary Editors. Members who wish to read papers should write to the Honorary Secretary.
