Welcome to new State 4-H Leader Dr. Denise Legvold University of Illinois Extension welcomes Dr. Denise Legvold as Assistant Dean and Director, 4-H Youth Development. Dr. Legvold received a Ph.D. from Mississippi State University in 2008 with an emphasis in Extension Administration. Dr. Legvold's most recent work experience has been as a 4-H Program Coordinator/Regional Extension Agent for the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. From 2000-2002, Denise served as Unit Leader, South Suburban Cook County, University of Illinois Extension. She also worked for Michigan State University Extension and Iowa State University Extension. Beginning with enrollment of 4-H members in September 2009, a $20 per year 4-H Program Fee will be applied to members of community clubs, special interest groups, Cloverbud groups, and after-school programs that meet regularly. Most of the fee will stay locally and be used by the local program to help 4-H support costs. Six dollars will be forwarded to the State 4-H program to provide educational, technical, and logistical support to maintain the 4-H program at all levels. No individual will be denied participation in 4-H due to the inability to pay. Extension offices may be contacted for scholarship information or other payment assistance. Clubs and groups may choose to do fundraising or collect donations to offset the 4-H Program Fees for their members. For more information, contact your local Extension Office. The program fee will be used to help maintain the quality of the 4-H program as shared in the Waves of the Future research study conducted by Tufts University that compared 4-H members to youth in other out-of-school programs. The study found that 4-Hers do better in school and are more likely to see themselves going to college and are less likely to engage in risky behaviors. November 7, 2009 Page 14
Leadership Equals Service to Others As society changes, we need young people who are prepared to lead and help communities. Twenty-three Effingham County 4-H Youth Ambassadors (ECYA) currently participate in the Effingham Leadership Academy. These ambassadors are currently developing seven aspects of leadership through hands-on experiences. Throughout the academy, members have participated in community service projects, allowing them to practice leadership skills while learning the value of giving back. The impact on the community has been significant. ECYA members donated a total of 510 hours, translating into a cost savings of $10,327.50 to those organizations. ECYA members are also utilizing their skills by taking on leadership roles in their communities and schools. One ECYA member, recently elected to a school group, struggled with how the group functioned. By using parliamentary procedures learned through the academy, the group is now running more efficiently.
