FOOTY RECORD ISSUE 15 25 July 2015 $2.00

EDITORIAL WEEK 15 F&Y Socials - Preserving the History of WRFL / FDFL The Footscray & Yarraville Socials Football Club (F&Y Socials) enjoyed a relatively short but successful life in the Footscray Districts Football League (FDFL), predecessor to the WRFL. Entering the FDFL competition in 1945, F&Y Socials rode the wave of post-war growth and success before succumbing to demographic change in Melbourne s inner west in 1975. Officially in recess, reports of the club s ultimate demise are considered a gross exaggeration. Next Friday the club will hold its third consecutive annual reunion, celebrating a stellar period of success fifty years ago: A Grade Premiers 1959, 1960, 1961, 1963 Under 18 Premiers (undefeated) 1962 Under 16 Premiers Despite its short active life, F&Y Socials boasted a total of 31 VFL and VFA players, including Footscray names such as Ted Whitten Jnr, Ian Bryant, Peter Welsh, Jack Welsh, John Edwards and Gary Peters. Friendships forged during those halcyon years have stood the test of time, as evidenced by attendance at well over 100 at each of the past two year s reunions. A full house of more than 130 is expected for next Friday s lunchtime reunion in Barkers Café at Whitten Oval. Organisers Max Linehan, Barry Bennett and Les Smith have decided that this will be the last of the F&Y Socials stand-alone reunions but would like to open the invitation to past players, officials and supporters of all FDFL / WSFL / WRFL clubs to continue the fellowship generated over the past three years. In discussion with WRFL staff, the concept of a Past Players & Officials Association has been floated as a way of continuing the involvement of those who have paved the way for today s generation of community football devotees. The WRFL currently honours its life members with a luncheon at the Division 2 Senior Grand Final. However, this limited group misses a whole range of devoted players, officials and supporters who have made long and valuable contributions to our league and who, in turn, have made football in the west a big part of their lives. The opportunity to get together once or twice a year in a football setting would be a great way to continue the interest in local football and renew old friendships. The crew from F&Y Socials will be walk-up starts as foundation members of the proposed Past Players and Officials Association. Anyone interested in joining is invited to contact Julia or Kirstie at the WRFL office (9315 5400) or email to info@wrfl.asn.au to register their contact details. WRFL staff will assist in organising a steering committee to get the concept off the ground and create an exciting new avenue for ongoing involvement in our great game. GILBOY SELECTED TO REPRESENT AUSTRALIA By Sophie Hammill While many juniors are busily preparing to play in the first week of finals this Sunday, one Werribee Districts player has also been preparing to represent Australia in the Junior World Series for indoor cricket. Fifteen-year-old Callan Gilboy has been playing football in the WRFL with Werribee Districts for six years, and despite his young age, has already played in four winning premierships in his short career. Callan is not shy of an achievement having won numerous awards such as Best on Ground honours (2008, 2009), Most Consistent, a Best and Fairest and being selected to play in the Junior Interleague competition. Yet while he is already a star footballer, Callan can also swing a bat on the cricket pitch, after starting his indoor cricket career in 2012. Callan used to attend his friends and family cricket matches which inspired him to join a league himself, his father Kevin Gilboy said. Callan currently plays for the Victorian team and was voted Best Player in 2014, before his selection to the national team earlier this month. Training and playing cricket on a weekly basis, Kevin said it took a lot of hard work for Callan to earn his selection for the Australian squad. Callan had to participate in a carnival which allowed him to reserve a spot to perform in the National championships. In just his fourth year of indoor cricket, he has been selected to represent Australia in the World Cup in Queensland, which will no doubt be a great experience for him. Although Callan s commitments have increased since his selection, he has never missed a training session and remains able to play football with minimal disruptions. Training for both sports during the week as well as playing matches over the weekend, Callan s schedule is busier than most juniors his age. However, if this isn t busy enough, Callan also umpires for the WRFL every Saturday and attends Mackillop College as a Year 9 student. While he knows that one day he may have to decide to follow his passion for one sport in the future, Callan hopes to continue to play both football and indoor cricket for as long as possible. It s needless to say that Callan s family is incredibly proud of all he has achieved so far and look forward to seeing him in action for the World Cup in September after the WRFL Junior Finals conclude in August. The sun came on last Sunday, the birds were singing, the shops were open and though Deer Park had lost a game of football the day before, the world did not end. I am sure that is how the Lions faithful and players saw the world after suffering their first defeat in nearly two years. They were outplayed on the day by Werribee Districts, simple as that. Districts almost beat them earlier in the season and that was no doubt a motivating factor for them. Deer Park lacked zip and their normally faultless structures let them down. Far from being the end of the world it is probably great ammunition for Marc Bullen as the finals approach. With Rhett King out for the year, I hope Jack Purton-Smith can overcome the hamstring injury he did in the first minute and return for the finals as he is one of the best players in the competition. Deer Park will bounce back this week against Albion no doubt about it. The match of the round is Spotswood v Altona. The momentum that the Vikings have at present is irresistible and while it is hard to stay up over a sustained period I think they can keep it going. Spotswood are a bit hit and miss for me at the moment to be picking them for this game. Sunshine has emerged as the dark horse for the five leaving St. Albans languishing in seventh spot. The Saints fall from grace has been dramatic and quick and they face a rampaging and very confident Werribee Districts. Such are the ebbs and flows of this season though, a Saints win would not be out of the question, but I strongly doubt it. Port Melbourne Colts has its past players day and a few premiership reunions on today but that won t be enough to get them over the line against the Kangaroos. Sunshine has a glimmer and this is a must win for them as they face Hoppers Crossing, Spotswood and Altona in the final three games. The other interesting battle is the race for the Andrew Gibson medal for the leading goal kicker in division one. It is the battle of the small forwards with Andrew Panayi on 44, Jordan Mead on 43, James Wong on 36, Kwame McHarg on 32 and the nearest thing to a tall forward Murray Boyd on 31 rounding out the top 5. The last few rounds will be very interesting. ROUND WRAP DIVISION ONE RESERVES Ten individual goal kickers. Five goals conceded. Wherever you looked, Werribee Districts were in control. Its 77-point thumping of Deer Park was reward for effort, as the second-placed side was the better team all day. Andrew Taylor and Tim Eccles led the way with three goals each for Werribee, who used ten majors across the second and third terms to break open the game and seal victory through a fierce and determined team effort. The 17.11(113) to 5.6(36) win keeps the Districts in second place, and pushes the Lions down to seventh. A matchup with Albion today will give Deer Park a good chance to end their poor run of form, while Werribee will battle St. Albans in arguably the game of the round. In other results, Spotswood has rejoined the winners list with its fourth victory in five games, downing Albion 9.15(69) to 5.5(35). A strong first half by the Woodsmen gave them a solid advantage going into the main break, leading by five goals. Both sides registered three majors in the second half, allowing the home side to run out 33-point winners. The win sees Spotswood jump up to sixth place, and its Round 15 matchup against Altona today may go a long way in determining who plays finals. Hoppers Crossing has maintained its position atop of the ladder in a hard fought 12-point win against Altona. The matchup was close all day, as inefficient kicking by the Warriors kept the game tight. Goals were at a premium during all four quarters, and two final term goals to Hoppers Crossing sealed the 5.14(44) to 5.2(32) victory. The win leads into this week s bye, helping the Warriors rest before they mount their challenge on the premiership. At Kinder Smith Reserve, St. Albans now sits comfortably in fourth spot, two games ahead of fifth placed Altona after its 18-point victory over Sunshine. A balance between offence and defence was key in the win, as St. Albans booted five goals and held the Kangaroos to two over the second and third quarters. The 10.8(68) to 6.14(50) win ties both sides on points (32 each), however Sunshine remain in third LADDER: RESERVES P W L D % PTS HOPPERS CROSSING 13 11 2 0 210.50 44 WERRIBEE DISTRICTS 12 10 2 0 211.83 40 SUNSHINE 12 8 4 0 155.77 32 ST ALBANS 12 8 4 0 136.83 32 ALTONA 13 6 7 0 108.89 24 SPOTSWOOD 13 5 8 0 75.70 20 DEER PARK 12 4 8 0 78.30 16 ALBION 13 2 11 0 42.70 8 PORT MELBOURNE COLTS 12 2 10 0 41.61 8 place with a higher percentage. TIV BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION TRAINING As the season has developed, clear partitions in form and class have emerged amongst sides the cellar dwellers, chasing pack, likely finalists and potential flag winners. Wyndhamvale have sat comfortably atop the heap as the competition s form side, West Footscray one step behind all the way. Victory for the Roosters over the Falcons on Saturday perhaps gave the first hint that they are ready to take the jump into that top rung. It must be remembered that both sides were without key personnel, the game was played at West Footscray s idiosyncratic home ground and without a ladder position on the line, neither side were showing their complete plans. Despite the dress rehearsal feel, the win should mean more to the Roosters after being comprehensively beaten by 26-points at their last encounter. In spite of the improved weather and small ground, it was a low scoring, defensive encounter a credit to the Roosters backline as so many of their wins have been born in offense. Only 11 goals were scored between the sides making Damien Yze s three goal haul instrumental for the victors as fellow spearhead Munir El Houli was well held. Around the ball Roosters ruckman Michael Kennedy kept momentum going his side s way while Tobi Bray demonstrated his undeniable class. How much will the Falcons take from a loss in which the largest margin at any break was just 11-points? They lacked the forward line firepower required to finish off much of their good work, understandable considering their three leading goal kickers Paul O Shea, Christopher Benson and Todd Lawrie, were all missing. The win should lend encouragement to West Footscray but both teams know a more important encounter is in the offing. In other fixtures, Caroline Springs came from behind to record a two-point victory over Glen Orden and keep their finals hopes alive. Meanwhile the sides currently occupying the final place to which the Lakers aspire Yarraville Seddon and North Footscray, gave their percentage a boost with big wins over Sunshine Heights and Manor Lakes respectively. ROUND WRAP DIVISION TWO RESERVES After three disappointing home ground losses in a row, North Footscray has turned its fortunes around with a comfortable 97-point win over Manor Lakes at Hansen Reserve. The Devils were favourites going into this round after defeating the Storm twice this season, but Manor Lakes were hoping to give the crowd an underdog win. Despite the Storm s best efforts, North Footscray dominated the game from start to finish, increasing the margin out as each quarter progressed. We all tried our best but the lack of fitness this season has really cost us. The win sees North Footscray currently sit in fourth position on the ladder but Caroline Springs are hot on their heels, after a percentage boosting win over Glen Orden. Travelling to Heathdale Oval, the Lakers added another loss to Glen Orden s tally after registering their seventh win of the year. The final margin 4.2 (26) to 13.14 (92). SUNSHINE HEIGHTS 14 0 14 0 11.83 0 where both teams will be looking to stamp their dominance on the competition in what will be a close match, while bottom teams Glen Orden and Sunshine Heights do battle at Ainsworth Reserve. The Dragons will be keen to put their efforts to the test and register their first win for the year, despite going down to the Hawks twice this season. By Dayle Dunshea Follow me on Twitter @dayledunshea Around the grounds, West Footscray has snatched top spot off the Falcons after maintaining a prominent lead throughout the match to run home 49-point victors. Despite losing their first two home ground matches this season, Yarraville Seddon has kept their recent winning streak alive, after defeating Sunshine Heights in a dominating game, the scores reading 22.24 (156) to 2.1 (13). This week Caroline Springs is preparing for a tough match at home against the new ladder leaders West Footscray. If the Lakers are able to win, they will be one step closer to overtaking North Footscray for fourth spot on the ladder. Manor Lakes will host another derby match against Wyndhamvale, but history tells us things won t be easy for the Storm as they take on their rivals who they have yet to come close to defeating this season. Yarraville Seddon will face North Footscray This Manor Lakes player puts the after burners on as he sprints away from his North Footscray opponent during their clash earlier this year. UMPIRES CORNER By Graeme Hodgart The start of the junior finals means that umpires are hoping that their efforts and performances at training and during the various matches will be rewarded. However, with such a huge amount of junior teams spread over many age groups, there is no shortage of junior finals requiring umpires. The first week of the junior finals is always a huge weekend because nearly every available umpire is in line to get at least one game. Many of the goal umpires will be asked to double up. The coaches and those on the selection panels are under immense pressure not only to appoint the right umpires to the correct games but also to ensure that there are enough umpires to cover all games. As the junior finals continue over the following four weeks, less and less umpires will be required each week. As they say, the cream rises to the top as the lesser skilled or inexperienced umpires fall by the wayside. The important point for those that miss out is that there is always next year. The umpires junior grand final appointment night has been a big event in recent years. On that night umpires for all the up-coming junior grand finals are announced. There will be relief, frustration, disappointment, jubilation and congratulations as the names are read out to the large gathering of umpires, officials, partners, siblings and parents. Hopefully those who are named as grand final umpires will be pleased with their appointments. Quite a number of umpires aim to be appointed to the Under 16A grand final as this is seen to be the highest and most coveted of all the Sunday grades. Of course, only a select number of umpires can be chosen to do that particular game, however regardless of what final game you may be allocated, any grand final should be treasured by those fortunate enough to take part. Hopefully all umpires, whether field, boundary or goal, are able to put their best foot forward and do an outstanding job in their final or their grand final. Irrespective of the game or the age group, all umpires should approach that game as being the most important for them and the players at that time. Check out the umpire appointments each Friday on the WRFL Umpires website at www.wrflumpires.com.au. LAWS OF THE GAME QUIZ #15 Last week s question: Player A is injured and a stretcher is called for by the trainers. Play is stopped by the field umpire and the stretcher is brought onto the field. The player recovers quickly and doesn t use the stretcher and is helped off the playing field by the two trainers. What happens? The correct answer was (OPTION B) Player A is allowed to sit on the interchange bench and is able to be interchanged back on the field after a further twenty minutes playing time has elapsed. This week s question: The ball is kicked by Player A and passes close to the top of the behind post. The boundary umpire signals out of bounds on the full while the goal umpire calls, Mine and taps his chest three times. The field umpire is unsure whether it was out of bounds or a score. What happens next? (a) The three umpires confer and a free kick is awarded against Player A. (b) The three umpires confer and the ball is bounced or thrown up at the top of the goal square. (c) The three umpires confer and a behind is awarded. Be sure to check out the correct answer in next week s WRFL Footy Record. 29 WRFL FOOTY RECORD

ROUND WRAP DIVISION THREE SENIORS An enthralling fixture provided supporters with plenty to talk about in round 14, as results highlighted the fascinating competition that is Division Three. The highlight of the round transpired at Laverton Park where the hosts knocked off the Wyndham Suns by 8-points in front of a pulsating crowd. The Magpies lead by as much as 43-points at three quarter time before the visitors restored from balance with six last quarter goals, Michael Lindsey s unstoppable seven goal haul proving the difference by the final siren. Questions need to be asked about both sides, such as whether Laverton can make one last run toward the finals. With upcoming meetings with Parkside and Sanctuary Lakes looming before a clash with Braybrook, destiny is truly in their hands. The Suns have won just one of its past four games and plenty of questions about the durability of their list will be asked. However, the football community knows just how good they can be, and their upcoming encounter with the Sharks looms as a cracker of a contest. Sanctuary Lakes defeated North Sunshine by 44-points last weekend in a match they simply had to win. The Sharks bounced back from a slow start to blast seven goals in the second term and appear primed to build heavily on their 38-point lead. They certainly would have too, had they been playing the Roadrunners of old, however North Sunshine worked tirelessly in the third term to pull the margin back to 19-points. The climb inevitably did prove too steep for the visitors. Sanctuary Lakes powered home and have an opportunity to inflict more frustration on the Wyndham Suns. North Sunshine faces Braybrook for the final time and will enter the game as heavy favourites. How they handle the expectation of winning will be exposed this weekend. Tarneit pushed Parkside all the way before falling short by 16-points in a fantastic contest at Wootten Road. Parkside were held to just two goals in three quarters of football before kicking three final quarter goals to survive the tough fight. The Titans have been fantastic to watch this season. TIV BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION TRAINING ROUND WRAP DIVISION THREE RESERVES The Wyndham Suns once again proved themselves as a flag contender, after applying forward pressure on Laverton to run out 25-point winners. After a tight first quarter, Wyndham started to break away from the Magpies in the following three terms, however Laverton were no easy beats and found ways to curb the Suns pressure, but it was too little, too late. Led by Adrian Pappas, Simon Nahyna and Lennon Doherty with five, three and three goals respectively, Wyndham displayed a complete performance, and further established themselves in the top two. The Magpies, led by Daniel Marin with four goals on the day, find themselves fighting to remain in the top four, as they sit just one win in front of the fifth-placed Sanctuary Lakes. After a disappointing Round 13 result, the Sharks responded strongly by putting the Roadrunners to the sword by 121-points. Michael Hall was at his best with eight goals, while teammates Cody Miles and Michael Yates were named best afield, as Sanctuary Lakes led from start to finish. Albanvale also found themselves big winners in Round 14, as they defeated Braybrook away from home. The Brookers put up a brave fight to trail by just 12-points at three quarter time, however another big bag by Ange Messina inspired the Cobras to a ten goal final term, resulting in a 67-point win. Finally, the Titans defeated an inspired Parkside outfit, who kept at it all day, only to fall short by 14-points in a very tight game at Wootten Road Reserve. Today, Laverton will have an opportunity to respond to its critics, as they travel to Tarneit to face the Titans. It is a must win game for both teams as finals close in, with neither team wanting to miss out on September glory. Sanctuary Lakes also have a huge task in their quest for finals action as they take on the blistering Suns. Wyndham has been one of the in-form teams of the year, and it will take the Sharks best efforts if they are to overcome them. North Sunshine and Braybrook will be playing for pride, as while neither team has much hope for a finals berth, both will be trying to make something LADDER: RESERVES P W L D % PTS ALBANVALE 14 13 1 0 189.55 52 WYNDHAM SUNS 14 10 4 0 220.63 40 TARNEIT 14 9 5 0 140.06 36 LAVERTON MAGPIES 14 7 6 1 107.10 30 SANCTUARY LAKES 14 6 7 1 101.19 26 PARKSIDE 14 6 8 0 97.61 24 NORTH SUNSHINE 14 3 11 0 51.78 12 BRAYBROOK 14 1 13 0 37.46 4 out of the last few weeks of 2015. ROUND WRAP DIVISION ONE U18 Four weeks remain in the 2015 home and away season and its approaching crunch time as the battle for two and three tightens up, as well as that last finals spot. While round 14 week didn t quite produce three even matches, it did give us the chance to focus on Werribee Districts and Hoppers Crossing who played off as two and three on the ladder and the contest didn t fail to excite. The players were greeted by freezing conditions at Soldiers Reserve and both sides took a while to warm into the match with only three goals coming in the first quarter. It was Hoppers Crossing though who took the early 6-point lead heading into the second term. The slow start must have waked Werribee up as they dominated the second quarter to kick three goals to the Warriors one and take the advantage into half-time. The third term saw Districts add another two goals to keep the Warriors at bay while looking to close out the match. Hoppers attempted a fourth quarter comeback, however it wasn t enough as Werribee did what they needed to do to sneak home by 11-points and claim their third victory in a row. Tiger tall-man Bior Malual stepped up to boot three goals to help steer his side over the line, while teammate Nick Buykx was amongst the best again, maintaining his impressive recent form off the half-back line. Scott May and Jye King also pitched in with solid performances in front of the Werribee home crowd. For Hoppers Crossing, Brayden Kitchen was the pick of the bunch, kicking three goals, but lacking a partner up front to help carry the scoring load. Mitchell Havard and Jarryd Langdon tried hard for the visitors in what was a tough game for the Warriors coming off a loss in round 13 to Yarraville Seddon. The win gives Werribee an eight point gap from their nearest rivals as they look to push for the top spot, while the loss for Hoppers puts them back in the race for that fourth spot with Altona and Yarraville Seddon fast approaching. In other results, Spotswood made light work over Yarraville Seddon getting across the line by 81-points. Dali Sulejmani-Blackwell was outstanding for the Woodsmen, booting four goals, while Conor Daley, Nayef Hamad and Charles LADDER: DIVISION 1 U18 P W L D % PTS SPOTSWOOD 12 11 1 0 249.67 52 WERRIBEE DISTRICTS 12 8 4 0 143.79 40 DEER PARK 12 6 6 0 142.75 32 HOPPERS CROSSING 12 6 6 0 131.61 32 ALTONA 12 6 6 0 98.70 32 YARRAVILLE SEDDON 12 5 7 0 107.40 28 ALBION 12 0 12 0 12.15 8 Bettiol pitched in with two apiece. Altona picked up a morale boosting win over Albion, running out 30 goal winners. The win leaves Altona level on points with Hoppers Crossing and Deer Park. Albion can t catch a break at the moment and they must wonder what they need to do to get their first win of the season. Round 15 will see a huge match take place between Spotswood and Werribee as one and two play off. A win for Werribee will cut the gap to just eight points between the two sides. A big game will also take place at Grant Reserve as Altona face Deer Park, the winner moving into third spot. The final game of the round will see Albion take on Yarraville Seddon from JR Parsons Reserve, while Hoppers Crossing have a week to gather its thoughts before its round 16 clash over the bye. ROUND WRAP DIVISION TWO UNDER 18 After coming into Round 14 off the back of a loss for just the second time this season, the Falcons trip to face Sunshine was especially important as they tried to maintain their chance at cracking the top two. The clash was also a must-win for the Kangaroos, with a victory seeing them move into fourth spot. Wyndhamvale quickly sought to atone for their Round 13 loss to open up a 20-point quarter time lead. The Kangaroos quickly fell 48-points behind at half time as the Falcons booted six-goals to one in the second quarter. After narrowly losing the third quarter, Wyndhamvale easily strolled to a massive 75-point win with a dominant final term ensuring the Falcons remain just behind the two ladder-leaders. Brenton Weedon and Cameron Morrison both kicked four-goals, while Andrew Addamo was the best for the Falcons. Daniel Anthony-Linnell kicked two of Sunshine s four-goals and Bradley Busuttil played well for the Kangaroos who remain a game outside the finals in sixth spot. Sanctuary Lakes was another side vying for that fourth spot and they faced Glen Orden who was riding a three-game losing streak. Although you wouldn t have picked that from the first quarter, as the Hawks kicked three-goals to one to lead by 13-points at the first break. The Sharks quickly turned the game their way in the second quarter as their deficit became a 13-point half time lead. Glen Orden cut it back to just eight with a quarter remaining which setup a tight fourth term. Sanctuary Lakes weren t going to drop another one at home and despite some inaccurate kicking, kept Glen Orden to just one-point and stormed home by 26-points. The Sharks had a spread of goal kickers with Zac Harrington being the only multiple goal kicker with two, while Patrick Eliepa and Marcus Falzon were named in the best. For the Hawks, it was Haidyn Shade who played a lone hand with threegoals. Elsewhere Werribee Districts knocked Hoppers Crossing out of fourth spot with a 37-point win and Newport got the four points over the Cobras after Albanvale gave a forfeit.
