SHOP & SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES Throughout the Year to Keep Your Community STRONG! VOLUME 78 NO. 41 Free Home Delivery 773 927 0025 J. Racinowski, Editor/Manager Lipinski and Jones Introduce Purple Heart and Disabled Veterans Equal Access Act Reps. Dan Lipinski (IL 3) and Walter Jones (NC 3) have introduced legislation to honor Purple Heart recipients and other American heroes by giving them access to Department of Defense commissaries and recreation facilities. The Purple Heart and Disabled Veterans Equal Access Act of 2018 would extend access to commissaries and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) facilities to Purple Heart recipients, all veterans with a service connected disability, Medal of Honor recipients, former prisoners of war, and veteran caregivers. The military considers access to these areas an earned benefit and we should all agree that Purple Heart recipients, disabled veterans, and other heroes of our armed forces have done more than enough to earn that access, said Rep. Lipinski. These brave men and women and their families deserve our utmost gratitude. It is our duty as a nation to not only say that we appreciate their service but also to enact policies such as this demonstrating that gratitude. I thank Congressman Jones for joining me in introducing this legislation and for all the work he does to honor the men and women in our armed services. Commissaries are grocery/department stores on military installations that sell food and some household items. MWR facilities offer a range of services on bases including libraries, outdoor recreation, dining, golf courses, and sports and fitness centers. I have the honor and privilege of representing over 85,000 veterans in Eastern North Carolina, of which over 2,000 have a service connected disability and many have been awarded a Purple Heart, said Congressman Jones. To all those who have bravely and valiantly served this country, often resulting in debilitating injuries, we owe a debt of immense gratitude. But that is not enough. It is time we as a nation double down on efforts to improve the lives of those veterans and their families. I am very proud to introduce the Purple Heart and Disabled Veterans Equal Access Act with Congressman Lipinski, and hope our colleagues will promptly support this legislation. The Purple Heart is the oldest honor that members of the United States military are given and it is awarded to those who have been wounded or died in combat fighting for the U.S. Since the modern incarnation of the award was established in 1932, approximately 1.8 million members of the military have received the Purple Heart. This legislation has been endorsed by many individuals and organizations, including the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the Association of the U.S. Navy, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and the Wounded Warrior Project. Harper Demands Fair Wages for In Home Care Workers Caring for Elderly, Disabled To help put Illinois home care workers who care for the state s most vulnerable residents on a path towards a living wage, state Rep. Sonya M. Harper, D Chicago, is pushing legislation that would establish a $15 minimum wage for Community Care Program workers. The people who dedicate their lives to providing the very best care for our seniors also deserve a helping hand so they can live happy lives, said Harper. That means paying them a fair and livable wage for the great work they do each and every day. Harper s House Bill 5609 increases the hourly wage rate for Illinois Community Care Program (CCP) workers to $15 an hour by 2021. The current average wage for in home workers is $10.98 an hour. The Community Care Program provides in home care services that allow elderly or disabled residents to remain independently in their homes, rather than being forced into expensive nursing home care. A rate increase for these workers was supposed to take effect following the passing of last year s balanced budget, but Gov. Rauner is now threatening to block that increase, hoping to dismantle the CCP and reduce the employee count. If we want to attract and retain professionals who provide top rate care to our community s most vulnerable senior citizens, we need to pay them fairly, said Harper. It s clear that the governor refuses to support public employees who help seniors and others who rely on this care. It sends the message that we don t value the quality of care that our neighbors receive. While Rauner wants to play political games and attack the workers and agencies that save lives, I will continue to support the people who selflessly spend their time car ing for those in our community who need it the most. Harper represents the 6th District, which includes all or portions of Armour Square, Bridgeport, Chicago Lawn, Englewood, Gage Park, Back of the Yards, Canaryville, New City, West Englewood and Marquette Park. Flu Season Still Upon Us Precautions to Prevent Flu Spread We know from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention s (CDC) latest update that this flu season shaped up to be the most severe we ve seen in the United States in several years with widespread flu activity across most of the country and increases in both hospitalizations and flu associated deaths. And, being on the front lines, my physician colleagues and I continue to see first hand an increase in patients coming into our offices, clinics, hospitals and emergency departments with flu like symptoms. That s why we, as the nation s physicians, are joining the CDC in urging all Americans to take the proper precautions to not only keep from becoming ill with the flu, but also prevent further spread of the illness to loved ones, neighbors, co workers and others in close contact, said David O. Barbe, M.D., President of the American Medical Association. If you ve already become ill with flu like symptoms, it s very important that you take every measure to contain your illness by staying home from work or school, making sure to wash your hands frequently and covering your cough and sneeze. All of these measures will be critical to preventing others from being exposed to the flu and helping prevent further hospitalizations and deaths. It is also very important that you seek treatment from your doctor early if you have flu like symptoms, especially if you are at high risk for developing flu related complications including those who have a compromised immune system, are pregnant, are younger than the age of 5, or are over the age of 65. Oftentimes, if taken early, anti viral medications can help reduce the severity of flu symptoms and speed up your recovery time. For more information about the current flu season, including vaccine and antiviral medication availability, visit the CDC s website at www.cdc.gov/flu. 708-447-8081 St. Barbara Bridgeport s Only BINGO!
