THE BLUEPRINT A QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER BY SJCF ARCHITECTURE EDITION 4, FALL 2015 AWARD WINNING DESIGN THREE SJCF PROJECTS EARN DESIGN AWARDS SJCF SPOTLIGHT: MEET MATT HAMM CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR ARCHITECTS 1

A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT As I reflect back on this summer, I can t help but be proud of the accomplishments of our talented team members over the past couple of months. The creativity of our project managers, architects and interior designers, working in tandem with our clients, led to three big award recognitions. Also, their dedication has led to the recent completion of other landmark projects in Kansas. Many of the projects - new and renovated schools, recreation facilities, churches, museums and businesses - are transforming the lives of thousands of students and facility patrons. We are especially proud of the performance and hard work of three of our intern architects, resulting in their recognition by the State of Kansas as licensed architects. I am excited to see what the rest of the year has in store for SJCF. Looking forward, I encourage everyone to sharpen client focus and collaboration, and to dedicate themselves to their project teams. When we work together, we can achieve anything! SJCF SPOTLIGHT : MATT HAMM, AIA : Title: Vice President, Architect Work: 15 years at SJCF Architecture Community: Leadership Wichita Class of 2015 Junior Achievement AIA Blox Class of 2013 Education: Bachelor of Architecture, Kansas State University, 1999 Notable Projects: Pathway Church, Goddard, Kansas (sketch - top, photo - middle) Ortiz Elementary School, Wichita, Kansas (bottom) Midwest Kia, Wichita, Kansas Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, Wichita, Kansas What is your favorite memory at SJCF? Designing Martin Ortiz Elementary School for Wichita USD 259. It is a colorful school, full of natural light and great spaces for learning. It is also the school where I volunteer for Junior Achievement. What activities do you enjoy outside the office? I spend a great amount of time outside the office keeping up with my wife and three active sons. I also like to draw in pen and ink, as well as play baritone in the First Church of the Nazarene orchestra. Who are the most important people in your life? My wife and boys give me joy. They are who I think about most in the good times and bad. What is the best advice you have ever received? My father gives me the best advice. Most of his advice is given through action, not words. Work hard. Watch what you say. Dream big. What keeps you motivated? I am motivated by the words what if... Curiosity is a good trait. 6

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR ARCHITECTS Congratulations to Erica Hertz, Teresa Burk and Brian Hertz for receiving their State of Kansas Architect Licenses! Erica Hertz Teresa Burk Erica received her Master of Architecture degree from Kansas State University in 2012. According to Erica, she wanted to become an architect at a very early age. Most girls my age were playing with dolls and Barbies whereas I was constructing every type of building I could imagine out of LEGOs. Of her recent achievement, I made a commitment when I started at K-State to do the best I possibly could and have no regrets in the career ahead of me. Licensure is a step in my path and in order to balance work and family I wanted to have this hurdle behind me. Teresa has been with SJCF Architecture since 2006. She received her Bachelor of Architecture degree from Oklahoma State University in 2004 and Master of Science in Environmental Studies from Friends University in 2008. Teresa is very involved with the US Green Building Council (USGBC) Central Plains Chapter and is passionate about working with others to better the city of Wichita. I m continually meeting new people and forging new relationships... I m learning about the city around me and ways that I might contribute to its success and the citizens well being. Brian received his Master of Architecture degree from Kansas State University in 2012. He decided to become an architect while taking a drafting/cad course in middle school. Brian s favorite thing about being a part of the SJCF team? Being involved with every aspect of a project is my favorite thing about SJCF. That has given me the opportunity to become licensed much quicker than some of my peers. Brian Hertz WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BECOME A REGISTERED ARCHITECT? DEGREE FROM AN ACCREDITED UNIVERSITY 3,740 IDP HOURS IN 17 EXPERIENCE AREAS + + PASSING SCORE ON ALL 7 ARES* *Architectural Registration Examinations SJCF Architecture takes great pride in our Intern Development Program (IDP). Of the 21 employees at SJCF who have an accredited degree in architecture, 18 are licensed. The remaining three are working toward licensure and should be ready to apply for their licenses in the next 12 to 18 months. 7

THAT S A WRAP Fall of 2015 has brought with it the completion of several exciting projects. Here are a few: The Derby North Middle School is part of a $66,600,000 bond issue that passed in 2012. The school is designed for 1,000 students. The 183,000 square foot building consists of four main areas: a centralized entry/cafetorium area, an athletic complex, an academic wing and an exploratory wing. Other projects that are part of the 2012 Derby Bond are also nearing completion, including renovations and additions at Derby Middle School and Oaklawn Elementary School. Building on the success of its fi rst campus in west Wichita, Pathway Church set out to open a second location in the growing community of Goddard, KS. With the help of the SJCF Architecture, Pathway was able to create a vibrant, energetic building to house their diverse and growing congregation. Since opening in June, the new campus has been a huge success. Overall we ve seen a 40% increase in weekly attendance at the Goddard Campus, since the new facility opened, Executive Pastor Larry Wren said. The addition and renovation projects at the El Dorado YMCA consist of two new basketball courts, program space and restrooms to the branch. The Kids Zone, family center and free weights areas were expanded. The El Dorado YMCA was one of the first YMCA facilities designed by SJCF Architecture and was the first suburban branch of the Greater Wichita YMCA. The project, located in the city s historic downtown, is across from El Dorado s iconic railroad depot. The Wichita Airport Parking Garage and Rental Car Center, designed in association with parking consultant Carl Walker, Inc., added 1,600 new parking spaces within close proximity of the new terminal. SJCF s role was to give a sense of architecture to the new facility, as well as to beautify the airport s campus through use of landscaping. I think the public will be surprised at the campus s efficiency, partner Sam Frey said, and for the first time, visitors to the airport will have access to covered parking. 8
