Art, Design & Architecture Museum; University of California, Santa Barbara. Biographical/Historical note Garrett Van Pelt Jr. was born in Wisconsin in 1879. In 1913 he was hired as a draftsman by Sylvanus B. Marston whose office was in Pasadena, California. A year later the two became partners and in 1922 Edgar Maybury joined the partnership. Six years later in 1928 Van Pelt went into practice independently. Van Pelt moved to Santa Barbara circa 1955. Over the course of his career, his more notable projects include: the Arcade building, the Garford house, and the Roy E. Mayo residence. Garrett Van Pelt died in 1972. Scope and Content note The Garrett Van Pelt drawings span 7 linear feet and date from circa 1927 to circa 1967. The collection is composed of three flat file folders containing architectural drawings and reprographic copies for the following projects: the Roy E. Mayo or Pepper Hill residence (1965), additions and alterations to the El Paseo El Presidio restaurant (1956-1959), and additions and alterations for the Harold Mathers residence (1965-1967). All drawings and reprographic copies pertain to projects in the Santa Barbara region. The collection also contains a half record storage box of negatives and photographic prints of projects Van Pelt as well as some of his partners, namely the firm of Marston, Van Pelt & Mayberry and Van Pelt and George Lind, designed. The projects that are documented in this form include: W.H. Peters Estate, Annandale Gardens, John Bancroft residence, Bassett residence, Dunbaugh residence, The Elite Inc., W.G. Frasner residence, Eleanor Hague residence, Harbison residence, Hill residence, Jurgen Store, Kellog residence, J.E. Killian residence, King residence, McCormick residence, McKeller residence, Norris residence, Colonel Noyes residence, Owsleg residence, Peters Building, Prentiss Fulmor residence, Recreation Building (Santa Barbara), Reding residence, Herbert E. Robins residence, S. Slocum residence, Thorson residence, 1212 S. El Molino residence, and a small photograph of a curved gate. Circa 90 4x5 negatives document a trip to Italy. The collection also contains reprographic copies of architectural drawings for the Judson Stone and WM. O. Melcher guest house, which was moved here from the James De Long collection. The majority of the photographs are of private residences designed by Van Pelt in the 1930s through the 1960s, most in the Santa Barbara area.
