Vokes Company Cleveland, OH The 3101 Euclid Avenue Building, 1957-58 Photo 1959 Late International - Miesian Style High-rise office building with set back ground floor in a plaza-like effect supported by single piers. Central 8-story office tower with penthouse flanked by 4-story wings. Modular pattern established by the structural frame. Clad with aluminum and glass curtain wall system. H.L. Vokes Company Early business focused on steel and aluminum patented prefabricated buildings. Herbert Vokes remained head of the company and Chairman of the Board until his death in 1952. The H.L. Vokes Company continued into the 1950s and 1960s with building designs adapting to the evolving International architectural style. Business disbanded in 1987. Air Conditioning The availability of inexpensive energy and widespread use of air conditioning allowed for deep-planned, transparent office buildings with curtain walled windows in the 1950s. Illuminating Company 55 Public Square Building, 1956-58 (NR#12001212 Euclid Ave. Historic District) The 3101 Euclid Avenue Building was the largest of more than a dozen new buildings built within the previous five years in the Euclid-East 30 th Street area.
