CEU RENEWS

We have a community which shares a spirit of openness. This spirit has sometimes been shaped alongside history, sometimes in spite of history. This spirit needed and needs a home. TIBOR VARADY University Professor Emeritus CEU Department of Legal Studies

THE FUTURE Commences As Central European University celebrates its 25th year, it is important to reflect on the past and plan for the future. CEU s mission, focused on the principles of free expression and open society, is more relevant today than ever before as these ideals face complex new challenges. Founded in 1991 in a region emerging from decades of communism, CEU became a beacon of advanced learning, initially for a small group of students from a handful of countries. Over the ensuing quarter century, we have grown to provide a world-class education to 1,500 students annually from over 100 countries through academic programs spanning two professional schools, 14 departments, and more than 20 research and academic support centers. As we embark on a new era, our physical presence must expand to meet the growing needs of our community. 2

BRIDGING Campus and Community Budapest is a true home for CEU. As we advance our commitment to academic and research excellence and solidify our role as an international hub for intellectual exchange, we are revitalizing our campus through CEU Renews. Our newly designed campus will not only support the needs of the CEU community, including those of future leaders from around the world, it will become a meeting place for the public at large. Our new, open campus will enhance our commitment to civic engagement by providing facilities accessible to the community and encouraging open debate. Gathering spaces suitable for international academic events will foster exchange and discovery, and the CEU Library will shine as the center of our intellectual pursuits. 4

Our campus will be more open than ever, welcoming lifelong learners from Budapest and beyond to be part of this vibrant and open community. We share our resources through civic engagement programs including over 700 lectures and cultural events.

The CEU Library is the heart of our campus. Home to the largest collection of English-language books and the most comprehensive array of electronic resources in Central and Eastern Europe, the Library is vital to the intellectual life of CEU and researchers in the region. Spanning five light-filled floors, the new Library includes expanded seating for over 400; labs and workrooms with cutting-edge technology and a cafe for students, faculty, and the community to connect and recharge. This next bold step affirms the Library s place as the center of campus life with spaces for contemplation, collaboration, and creation of knowledge in all its forms. 7

Twenty-first century libraries are places where people, reflection, and invention meet. The new CEU Library will promote discovery, openness, and tolerance in the tradition of the best university libraries. DIANE GERACI Director, CEU Library

CEU is a model of sustainability. Our eco-friendly campus prioritizes resource and energy efficiency and creates a beautiful new green space in the city center. CEU is the first higher education institution in Central and Eastern Europe to earn very good status from BREEAM, the leading assessment method for sustainable buildings.

BECOMING Involved This transformative renewal requires a global community of support. CEU invites you to make your mark on the new campus with a gift bearing your name or that of someone you wish to honor. From sponsoring reclaimed bricks for $250 to making a multi-million dollar investment, there is an opportunity for you. Every contribution supports CEU students today and tomorrow. Together we can continue building opportunity and community. LEADERSHIP GIVING Investment Opportunities: $5 million and above There are several key opportunities for donors to make transformative lead gifts to CEU for its renewal project. These gifts not only provide the resources needed to achieve our goals, but inspire and motivate members of the CEU community to get involved as well. TEACHING & LEARNING Investment Opportunities: $60,000 and above Innovative classrooms are central to the purpose and excellence of CEU. These spaces are critical to learning and a series of dynamic, new classrooms ranging in size and technological capacity will be highlights of the renewed campus. As CEU prepares its students for international leadership in an increasingly high-tech world, it is essential to provide them with sophisticated spaces equipped for intellectual exploration, research, and peer collaboration. A media lab, PhD research labs, and a digital literacy lab will provide the tools needed to develop their skills. At the core of CEU exists an internationally renowned group of academic leaders who are experts in their fields. CEU Renews will provide them with the advanced office spaces they need to work closely with students in addition to pursuing their own academic research. 12

CONVENING Investment Opportunities: $75,000 and above Technologically advanced spaces in which groups of students, faculty and university leaders can convene are critical to the work of CEU. Spaces such as a state-of-the-art conference center; a beautiful new 400-seat auditorium; board, conference, and meeting rooms; and exhibition spaces and group work rooms ensure that new ideas are shared and the University can continue to meet the 21st century needs of its diverse community.with such impressive spaces, CEU will continue to attract prominent guests to contribute to the pursuit of democracy and open society. SOCIAL GATHERING Investment Opportunities: $25,000 and above As CEU students endeavor to meet the strenuous demands of their graduate degrees, campus spaces suitable for rest, rejuvenation, and casual interactions with peers are vital. Among a full suite of newly planned spaces, cafes outside the library and on the rooftop will meet this need and serve to provide unique opportunities for exchange. CONNECTING Investment Opportunities: $100,000 and above An interconnected campus unites the community. Architects O Donnell & Tuomey have created signature passageways (seen on page 11) between classrooms, offices, conference halls, study areas, and cafes. These architectural features form new pathways for daily connections. 13

MAKE YOUR MARK Investment Opportunities: $250 and above CEU Renews signifies a landmark transition for the institution as it celebrates its 25-year history, while on the cusp of an exciting future. We invite past and current students, faculty, and friends to join us in commemorating our new campus by naming a seat in the new auditorium or reclaiming bricks from the original buildings. STUDY Investment Opportunities: $1,500 and above Individual and communal spaces for students to share ideas, prepare course assignments, and develop presentations are crucial for any academic setting. Within the new campus, CEU will offer a broad range of study spaces and seating areas suited to meet the unique requirements of rigorous intellectual work. Save a Seat (premium). Name or dedicate one of 160 permanent seats in the new auditorium. Save a Seat. Name or dedicate one of 220 chairs in the auditorium s flexible seating section. Brick by Brick Reclaimed bricks from the original buildings have been re-installed in the new campus. Your name, or a name of your choosing, will be etched in glass overlaying the new brickwork. 15

360 VIEW Investment Opportunities: $750 and above CEU s commitment to sustainability and the environment prompts us to expand opportunities for students to integrate the natural environment into their daily lives. The new Rooftop Terrace allows alumni and friends to contribute to a dynamic green space in the middle of the urban landscape.

PARTNERS in Development We want our new building to feel like it s made for Budapest and that it s part of the inherited cultural landscape of this city. JOHN TUOMEY O Donnell & Tuomey, RIBA Royal Gold Medal Winner 2015 Inspired by CEU s open society mission and the city of Budapest, as well as the architectural heritage of the site, the architects design was created as much for the surrounding community as the university sourcing materials locally and working closely with the historic preservation council and contractor consortium Market-Strabag. Dublin-based architects O Donnell + Tuomey, with Hungarian partner M-Teampannon, were chosen to design CEU s new campus through a global competition drawing firms from around the globe. Sheila O Donnell and John Tuomey are the 2015 recipients of the RIBA Royal Gold Medal, one of the world s most prestigious architecture awards, and have earned an international reputation for innovative cultural, social, and educational buildings in urban settings. They have worked together in partnership as O Donnell + Tuomey for more than 25 years, most recently on a new student center for the London School of Economics. 18

Project TIMELINE CEU Renews will follow three phases of development over six years. All plans were created in conjunction with municipal and heritage protection authorities. Our costs will total approximately 34 million, and we look to our broad range of individual, foundation, and corporate supporters to assist us in this endeavor. We invite you to contact us to discuss opportunities to become involved.
