March 16 2016, Volume 41, No. 35 THE NEWS FROM CANBERRA Greetings from Canberra, as 12 Wahroonga Rotarians attend the inspiring District Conference. Advertised as a great opportunity to catch up with friends, it is also an opportunity to make new friends as well. I ve gained a broader picture of the enormous amount of good works achieved in our District. District 9685 Annual Conference in Canberra began with a stirring address from RI President Ravi Ravindran's representative PDG Alagu Alagappan, who encouraged all Rotarians to serve "from the heart". PDG Tony Castley, who was presented with the RI Service Above Self Award, highlighted recent improvements in the Rotary Foundation and the continuing success of PolioPlus - Polio is now in only two countries. Robert Pennicot topped the Friday evening off with a humorous account of his $259,000 PolioPlus fundraising circumnavigation of Australia by dinghy. We were intrigued to have an update from Gemma Sisia, founder of The School of St Jude in Tanzania. She was raised near Guyra with her seven brothers. With the aid of several Rotary Clubs in the New England area she built a one classroom school in 2002, almost in the shadow of Mt Kilimanjaro. North Gosford Rotarians built a second classroom and the school has continued to expand. She started with three students and now has over 1,900 including 1,400 boarders in two primary schools and one high school. The first high school graduates are about to commence university after their mandatory year of community service.. Gemma accepts only the brightest kids from the poorest families - about one per cent of applicants. She is a remarkable Australian who has made priceless contributions to her adopted country. One of her first high school graduates - Dorice - gave a wonderful testimonial to the opportunities St Jude s has provided her. Dorice is about to start medical studies with the aim of becoming a gynaecologist of whom there are only 100 in the whole country. Thank you Rob F. and Ken for contributing for this report. We are honouring the memory of our 1983-84 President Bill Leventhal, Bill practised as a GP at his surgery on Kissing Point Road, and was Visiting Medical Office at the San. He led the change of our club from a struggling lunchtime club with 23 members to our club of 60-plus members today. ALL SYSTEMS GO FOR THE BIG ONE Marshals get their last Bobbo briefing before Sunday At last week s meeting, Paul Rickard, of Turramurra Rotary and an official of the Bobbin Head Cycle Classic Bobbo briefed the club members who had volunteered as marshals for the ride next Sunday. The rest listened, highly interested. Paul said there were lots of people involved in the event in what was almost a year-round activity. Bobbo is what he called a quad club activity there were four Rotary clubs involved St Ives, Turramurra, Wahroonga and Ku-ring-gai. Safety is our Number One priority, Paul said, and we want to make sure that you, as volunteers are safe. He said that there had been a thorough check of feedback from last year s ride, and we ve done a lot more work on our emergency response plans, particularly the San teams that are coming on site, We are having two ambulances, to get to some of the far-flung places quicker, We will have six or seven St John s teams, and they ve all got paramedcs. He said that on the traffic management side we Paul Rickard and a Volunteer s Satchel. continue to invest in variable message signs which will be going up from next Friday. They are the boards that warn motorists about something happening. 15 this year compared with 12 last year. He said there were two high risk areas-= the descent down into Bobbin Head and the descent from West Head. There are four rides, 27km. 57km, 80km and 104km. More than 2,000 riders are registered, and by Sunday, the organisers are expecting more than 2,400. The rides start at 6.30 a.m. at Karuah Oval. There will be 400 volunteers out on the day, with more than 50 associated with our club, and another 30 from the Hornsby-Ku-ring-gai Women s Shelter. More of our club people will be at Terrey Hills and the West Head area. Paul said the 104km would be starting at 6.30 a.m., half an hour earlier, a change from last year. That is before official sunrise. The sooner we get cyclists on the road, the less traffic impact we have later in the day, the sooner they get back. This also allows us to increase the capacity. The 104km ride will need to go with lights. Paul demonstrated a number of details of road closures which we won t try to describe in these pages, but each volunteer received yellow satchel pack of details when they left the club meeting. He said there was a new drinks stop at the new Thai restaurant at Terrey Hills. He urged marshals to familiarise themselves with the drink stops as it was one of the major questions riders want to find out as they were riding. They are at the Toolang Playing Field, Warrimoo Avenue, St Ives (0700 to 1300); Kinka Reserve, Tooranga Rd and Kinka Rd, Terrey Hills, (8.30 to 11.30); Resolute Bay Picnic Area, West Head (8.30 to 11.30); Thai Restaurant, McCarr s Creek Road, Terrey Hills (0900 to 12.30).

The Bill Leventhal Awards for that extra mile Today, at the Sydney Adventist Hospital, our club will be presenting the 2016 Bill Leventhal Awards to two workers at the San judged by their managers and fellow workers to have gone the extra mile in their contributions to the hospital and in their service to the patients. He award is named for Dr Bill Leventhal, left, a former president. There will also be five Pride of Workmanship Awards to those judged by their fellows as worthy of recognition for their similar service. These are the citations for the awards: The Bill Leventhal Award. Susan Van Vliet Susan works in the San s Coronary Care Unit (CCU) and has worked as a nurse all her life, starting as a Nursing Aid in Aged Care and enrolling at the San in 1977. Sue continued on to do her RN training whilst being a single mum with a baby and toddler, working nights to support the family. She has been an RN ever since, returning to the San s CCU in 2007 rising to become a CNS and now Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE). Sue gives 110% to everything she does. With a heart full of compassion and a can do attitude she is a fantastic nurse who inspires and motivates everyone around her. She has put herself last for her whole life. Staff education is her passion her enthusiasm rubs off, exciting staff to learn. Sue produces wonderful posters, graphs and other visuals, usually in her own time at home, inspiring interest in nursing. Sue has been a volunteer on the San s Cambodian Heart trip twice and is involved in fundraising, producing a CCU cookbook. She has remained a single mother, supporting her daughter and grand-daughter yet still finds time to fund her volunteer work overseas. Sue is a great example of the San s mission, spending her life caring for others. The CCU regard her as their Matriarch and a much loved friend and mentor. The Bill Leventhal Award. Brendon Carter Brendon has worked at the San Hospital for over 28 years mostly in the Intensive Care Unit as an RN. His energy and good humour have made him a much appreciated member of the team. Patients and family all love him for his cheerfulness, gentle caring attitude and his communication skills which bring light and hope to sometimes pretty dark situations. Brendon has been a team leader for many of those years making long night shifts shorter and more pleasant by his ever present wit. Brendon is recognised as a vital cog in the machinery that is the Intensive Care Unit. His humour and generosity of spirit is the oil that makes the place run smoothly.

Brendon has been on many voluntary San Coronary Open Heart trips, especially to Fiji and Myanmar and his multi-talented abilities have provided invaluable support, especially when things get tough. Pride of Workmanship Awards Jacob Dye Jacob Dye has worked for the San s Hospitality Services for the past nine years. In this time he has undertaken a variety of roles and become a highly experienced and valued member of the team in the role of Report and Administration Support. In the past four years Jacob has been important in the design, implementation and reporting of Quality Improvement Services. During this period Hospitality Services have won three Adventist Health Care Quality Awards. Jacob created, and continues to write our departmental newsletter the Hospitality Herald. This newsletter keeps our staff informed and promotes employee cohesion. Jacob was also a valued asset when completing speciality cleans for the opening of the new Clark Tower and was always happy to adjust his family and university commitments to the tight schedule of opening the new wards and theatres. Jacob is a valued member of our team and an outstanding asset to the department. Jacob was recently featured in the Hornsby Advocate as a member of the Adventist Development and Relief Agency who flew in to Fiji immediately after Cyclone Winston devastated the area. Steve Stephenson The San s Chaplain s Department has been blessed by the addition of Steve Stephenson to the team. Steve has worked in many areas of the hospital and for a time the staff of the Intensive Care Unit enjoyed his warm and humble presence. Steve now plays a major role in the Oncology Department. Steve s role as Chaplain comes with a background of care. With the help of his wife he organises a permanent home for orphaned children and destitute women in the Philippines. Steve s mind is always directed towards the care and nurture of others. The Intensive Care Unit recognise his willingness to always be present to provide support and nurture at difficult times for others, together with his beautiful smile and manner in providing loving service to the Hospital, and his amazing contribution to humanity. Steve is therefore a worthy recipient of the Rotary Club of Wahroonga s Pride of Workmanship Award for 2016. Tracey Buwalda Tracey Buwalda is an absolute pleasure to work with in the San s Maternity Ward. She is efficient, helpful and provides exceptional patient care. Tracey always works with a positive and happy manner that is reflected in an optimistic atmosphere in the ward. She constantly helps others and goes above and beyond her required duties on a regular basis. Tracey is an active and very approachable team leader who will tackle any challenge with care and empathy. She is a hardworking and team player. Tracey always encourages staff and is an excellent role model to the Junior Midwives working in the ward. She has recently completed her Grade IV Midwifery Certificate and is a great asset to our Unit. Sally Martin Sally Martin has been a valued member of the San s Medical Services Department for the past 13 years, and has undertaken many roles over this time, including Accreditation Manager, Admin. Officer, Medical Services Projects Manager and Relief Exec. Admin. Assistant to the CEO. Sally is dedicated to providing the highest quality support in all her roles. Sally regularly goes above and beyond the call of duty to assist doctors with their enquiries. Her friendly personality and extensive knowledge of the hospital means doctors rely on her to resolve a myriad of issues. Sally has led many process improvements in Medical Services including the doctors database. Sally ensures that staff are recognised at important times, such as birthdays and being welcomed back after annual leave as well as end of year functions. Medical Services have now moved on three occasions and each time Sally project-managed these with great outcomes. Sally exemplifies true dedication to her work and to customer service.

Patricia (Trish) Campbell Trish has been the Nurse Unit Manager at the San s Day Infusion Centre for the past five years and will be sadly missed, leaving to live in Port Macquarie. Trish has been a great leader and has accomplished many achievements from which the staff are now reaping the benefits.trish worked on several major projects including the re-location of the Day Infusion Centre to the new Clark Tower, implementing a new computer system called Carezone together with other integrated and challenging tasks. Trish has constantly encouraged staff to improve their professionalism and personal performance and always compliments those deserving recognition. She is full of fun, is fair, patient and kind, and always willing to listen with an open mind and heart. The couple produce photos of their 50ft motor home, which is equipped with a beautiful nursery. The social workers then are doubtful about the education that the child would get. We ve arranged for a fulltime tutor, who will teach the child all the usual subjects, along with French, Mandarin, and computer skills. Then there are doubts about raising a child in a circus environment. The couple: Our nanny is an expert in paediatric welfare and diet. The social workers are finally satisfied. They ask What age child are you hoping to adopt? The couple: It doesn t really matter, so long as he fits in the cannon.
